Amazing picturesque location! Mineral water was natural and wonderful. Be prepared to sleep on a futon on the floor, but other than that very comfortable. People are very nice anyways in Japan, but the staff here was particularly helpful and accommodating. Free shuttle bus from Jomo-Kogen was a real plus which enabled us to get there from Tokyo via Shinkansen. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Thank you super nice lady at the front desk who greeting me upon arrival and during all my stay which make me feel welcome.
The mountain view of the outdoor onsen, the snow falling down, was incredible.
Very good food quality and hospitality of serving staff.

Great place for skiing.
Great place for skiing.
We tried Houdaigi Ski area and Minakami kogen200 ski resort. Both were excellent.
Houdaigi is just a ski area with a restaurant and gift shops. The ski slopes are good.
Minakami kogen200 is a hotel with attached ski area, which makes it a ski resort I guess.
It's hard to find vegetarian or vegan food in these areas though.

Very old town, many of the restaurants and shops were closed - probably because of COVID-19.
The nature is truly beautiful there, huge mountains, lots of natural water and flowers.
There are also many hiking trails that can be a bit tricky to find but it's definitely worth it to do some research about the area.

Self driving is a proper way to Minakami, especially during driving to the onsen. Both sides of the road, you can view the forest and trees covered with whitish snow and natural stream and dams in it. No need to hurry when you drive and you can take a photograph anytime during the journey.

An onsen town at the base of the Japan Alps.
An onsen town at the base of the Japan Alps. A slow town that's a little run down thanks to overdevelopment during the bubble era. However, it feels like its making a comeback, with a thriving adventure activity scene and community, as well as cheap, good quality accommodation. There's even a craft beer bar and a good quality pizza joint.
Access is very good, with a bullet train station nearby and frequent buses offering access to nearby nature and activities.
Give it a few years and a bit of love and it will be a thriving destination.
We had a lovely view of the mountains. The private onsen was very nice, but the public onsen is very good as well! The staff is very nice and always accomodating. If you like traditional Japanese food, you'll love what they serve during the evening and morning.
I recommend to stay at this ryokan either during fall (momiji) or winter. We were a bit too early for the heavy snowfalls, but still managed to catch some snow the second evening. Even without the snow it was lovely. I can imagine it looks amazing with the fall colors!
The whole experience was impeccable. The rooms were lovely, the futons super comfortable, the onsen incredible, the food PLENTY and delicious. They catered to my dietary requirements and the staff went above and beyond for anything we needed. I had read so many scary reviews about this place and it just makes me wonder whether we went to the same place. It was amazing, everything truly perfect.
The hotel is right next to the river and we got a room with river view. It's just 7 min walking to Minakami Station. The hotel has an indoor Onsen with river view. There are places to sit in the lobby, which are comfortable, there is also a piano to play. The staff, Mr Kageyama was extremely friendly and welcoming and we had a great stay. Thank you!
The location was absolutely beautiful, there is not a whole lot to do but it was very peaceful. Very nice and relaxing. The staff were super nice and accomodating and the onsen were amazing! I had some of the best sleep I ever had here, love the futon. There was an amazing shakuhachi performance and I will keep my stay here in my heart forever.
+ The staff were very friendly and helpful.
+ We pre-ordered the sukiyaki for dinner. It was absolutely delicious.
+ The rooms were spacious and comfortable.
+ Private Onsen is available. But you will need to shower at the public onsen first.
+ The grounds were beautiful. A very relaxing stay.
Dinner and breakfast were seasonal and delicious. The baths were wonderful, the outdoor bath even more so in the snow. Sitting in the iconic main bath, one can only feel connected to the history of the onsen and ryokan.
Such a charming Ryokan, with friendly attentive staff. The Onsen were wonderful, especially the outdoors Onsen. We also visited the nearby Tanigawa ridge fro hiking, which I can recommend.
It is a very homey and comfortable place to enjoy the beauty of Japanese Ryokan and onsen. This is my second time to be there and I really am looking forward to coming again next time
The Superior Twin Rooms were amazing, spectacular views of the golf course and surrounding mountains.
There was an open air onsen just accross the hotel it was nice as well.
Lovely lovely ryokan. Staff were super friendly. The food was exceptional and we loved our room. The outside onsens are some of the nicest we’ve been lucky enough to visit.
As we rented a car, the drive to Takaragawa onsen was really pretty in the snowy setting. Through winding roads the mountainous approach was the best part of our stay.
