Beautiful locations - good for people who love the nature. Only way to go around is to rent a car as everything's quite far apart. My favorite stop was the Hotokegaura rock formations, along the Shimokita Peninsula. About a 20-min walk from the parking lot to the rocks. Be sure to also stop by at Cape Oma for some tasty Oma Tuna!

There are some true gems on the Omanita peninsula including impressive rock formations and a very old temple complex. For the one who like driving (car or motorcycle): the coastal road facing the Aomori side from Mutsu to Oma is a dream to drive. That is also the "downside": it takes long to get from A to B, and without a car it is virtually impossible to explore the peninsula.

I went to Mutsu just to go to Bodaiji temple but I enjoyed other things as well. I stayed in Ominato rather than Mutsu town and that was a good choice for me. Ominato is quaint and spreads along the seafront and has an amazing park for its size. It was made from the old town water supply reservoir and is a very good space to wander around in. Of course, Bodaiji temple was the highlight of the stay. The setting is as good as the write-ups suggest. Very pretty lake totally surrounded by bush-clad mountains and the active geothermal area was better than I expected. You can get as close as you want to steaming fumaroles and tiny springs of hot water. Take your time to meander slowly.
