The Beatrix Potter Gallery is located in nearby Hawkshead, and Lake Windermere is only a 10-minute drive from YHA Hawkshead. The lush greenery of Grizedale Forest is just outside the hostel, home to excellent mountain biking trails and a Go Ape! treetop adventure course.

Nice environment, good value for money.

In the Lake District village of Elterwater, the independent Elterwater Hostel offers dormitories and private rooms, with a communal lounge and dining area. Nestled in Langdale Valley, this hostel also boasts free WiFi, home-cooked food, cycle storage and is also just 2 minutes’ walk from the local pub.

Nice cottage in a small local town surrounded by mountains and sheeps Nice location for a departure to any hiking tours and not too for from Scaffel Pike which I did

Set in a grand Victorian mansion, YHA Langdale is a National Trust property with leafy grounds, cosy log fires and a restaurant. The Lake District hostel is situated between Elterwater and Grasmere.

The bright and airy rooms feature modern bunk beds, and some have a private bathroom. The YHA also features a TV lounge and games room, and the balcony terrace has scenic views of Windermere.

While we couldn't book the more central YHA Ambleside, YHA Langdale was an amazing discovery! The staff was so polite and ready to accommodate all our requests. The chef in particular needs a mention because he personally came to check if our food was good, which it was. The YHA has a sprawling outdoor lawn which has stunning views of Langdale! There are so many common areas for guests to sit in and a very Victorian dining hall which looks so royal. The best part is that just 200 m downhill from the hostel, you have an in-road (off-road) into the Rydal Mount trek that has amazing views of the Lothay river and is a must-do, in my opinion! The downside, of course is that if you are not travelling by your own car and have a lot of luggage (like me- I was on an international trip), the last bus stop is 2.2 miles away (Grasmere- bus 599, 555), so you will either need to take a cab from Ambleside (try Amber taxis, super helpful) or walk uphill for 45 mins (which is quite refreshing otherwise but nearly impossible to do with a trolley). Having said that, I wouldn't change a thing about my trip because the walk downhill to the Grasmere bus stop (the Wordsworths' graves are nearby) is so scenic that it leaves you completely spellbound! Try the coffin trail that starts near Dove Cottage (especially when it's drizzling a bit) and of course, the YHA leads to the Great Langdale pikes! Or if you want a relaxed stay, you could just go for fishing along the river. P.S.: The receptionist, Miranda, is possibly the loveliest human we met on our trip to the UK.

Looking for a hostel?

Budget travellers know that there is no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a bit more.

Great location away from the main road, fantastic cooked breakfast but no fruit at the buffet / cereal area, which is unusual for a hotel of this calibre. The beers were awesome, as was the food, and the staff were the best!

Best youth hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Loads of space, food was excellent, room was clean and facilities were great. Big group of kids in when we were there, but that’s to be expected! Kids were quiet at night, and staff were very friendly.

The staff were friendly and helpful, explaining the necessary information for my stay. The meals were very good value for money as well as I was able to get a main meal and dessert for £15-£17 compared to eating in the village. The hostel is a short walk away from Coniston centre which is ideal if you plan to go for a drink with a group to one of the village's pubs. The location also makes it a cheap option for solo hikers doing the Old Man of Coniston or the other hiking trails around the area.

It was my first time staying in a youth hostel and now I don’t think I will ever go back to staying in a hotel. The staff were friendly, the self catering kitchen was excellent, toilets and rooms so clean and the location was amazing. There was also a little games room what my daughter absolutely loved.
