This is a very different kind of accommodation and is quite a way from New Norfolk and does require you to travel over gravel roads. We used it as a base to visit the Mt Field National Park and it was a reasonable drive each morning. That said,...

Gorgeous location up in the hills amongst the bush and away from everything. The camp kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities were fabulous. Free washing machines. Camp kitchen really well stocked with everything you need.

Set in Glenfern, this architect-designed rural retreat is located in a quiet, secluded and peaceful bush valley, southwest of New Norfolk high above the Derwent River. Base Camp Tasmania is the ideal getaway for travellers, bushwalkers and anyone seeking a sublimely peaceful place to relax and unwind. A Protected Area on Private Land (subject to a Conservation Covenant), Base Camp Tasmania abounds in native Tasmanian wildlife (we are registered Wildlife Carers) including Pademelons, Bennetts Wallabies, Echidnas, Wombats, Spotted Quolls, and Brushtail Possums.
Graham's association with Tasmania began during the 1950s as a young teenager when he hitchhiked around the island camping and using YHA Hostels. His love for Tasmania's national parks was further influenced by Sir Edmund Hillary with whom he was fortunate to spend a week at a mountaineering camp in 1960, snowed-in during a blizzard at Mt Field National Park. In the late 1990s he resumed his acquaintance with Tasmania after walking many of Victoria's iconic walks (Victorian Alps, Grampians and Wilson's Promontory). Although he has walked all routes offered by TWE his experience also extends to other Tasmanian and overseas destinations such as the fabled Routeburn Track in New Zealand and the arduous Kokoda Trail in New Guinea. He has trekked in Patagonia on the Paine Circuit and around el Chaltén (Monte Fitzroy), in East Africa on Mt Kenya, the Crater Highlands and Mt Kilimanjaro. He has since revisited New Zealand where he trekked around Mt Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park, and more recently in Iceland on a variety of tracks in their wilderness regions including the Laugavegur Trail. His most recent adventures have been in Kamchatka (Far Eastern Siberia) .
Discover the variety of unique Tasmanian animals, birdlife and flora on this 41 hectare property, or take an easy drive to some of Tasmania’s most renowned World Heritage wilderness areas and National Parks a short distance away. Try your hand at trout fishing in the Plenty and Derwent rivers; visit the nearby Salmon Ponds; marvel at the forest giants in the Styx Valley; journey into the past and explore the Port Arthur convict prison on the Tasman Peninsula; sample some of the excellent wines amongst the vineyards and wineries of Coal River Valley.
