This motel was just mindblowing! I could have googled in advance to see how an underground accommodation actually looks like but wanted to get surprised - and it worked! I was fascinated by the design, the big and comfortable bed, the shower, just about everything. Despite the walls I didn't even think about being literally inside a mound. The owners, even though we met just briefly, were super friendly and you can tell they enjoy living and working in Coober Pedy, despite the flies ;-)

Felt like a lived-in dugout, not just one dressed up to be tourist accommodation. Loved sitting on the little porch looking across the pebble driveway and road to the dugouts built into the hill opposite.
Two bathrooms were a plus.
The owner has a book asking for suggestions which is a great attitude.

Di's Place was exceptional. We were completely happy with every single aspect of the stay. Di was super helpful and made our stay perfect. The dugout is wonderful - spacious and fully equipped with everything you could ever need. We stayed in one of the hotels last year when passing through Coober Pedy - there is no comparison. We loved Di's Place and recommend it totally as THE place to stay in the town.

Much of the town being underground is something worth experiencing, the people were friendly and helpful, and we visited in April during cooler weather and it was pleasant. We have previously been there in the heat of summer and it's NOT so nice, dusty and hot, which is obviously why most of the town live underground.
The nearby Breakaways Conservation Park is definitely worth visiting; you can do a round trip through the Breakaways from Coober Pedy in around 90 mins including at least 30m at the various lookouts and photo vantage points. The colours from brilliant white to deep reds is amazing and the area is so different to the surrounding arid land.
The food and service at the Big Winch is superb and it's also a great vantage point to see the town and surrounding area from.
I would also recommend John's Pizza Bar in the main street and the Outback Bar and Grill attached to one of the servos serves decent grub too, as well as signature Outback Shiraz (from the Barossa Valley) for about $25/bottle that went down well.
Definitely a better town in the cooler months if you dislike the heat.

We stayed two nights, which meant one full day. Next time I would put in either 3 or 4 nights, giving 2 or 3 full days. In our one day we saw one mine, drove out to the Salt & Pepper rock formation, then had time for some drone shots above some of the mine hills out on the highway. The evening before that, we at least saw sunset from the Big Winch, which was a great introduction to the town. Another day would enable another mine visit at the very least ... since the mines are the most interesting thing about Coober Pedy.

Coober Pedy is a opal mining capital of the world. It is an interesting place to visit for a day or two to learn about its mining history, specific life in the Australian desert and to experience a true outback.

We have now stopped twice at Coober Pedy, once for lunch and fuel, and this time for an overnight sleep driving to Darwin and have no desire to ever return. Only reason to go there if you really need to stay underground or are interested in the mining history. The town has nothing to recommend itself.

Our favourite place for dining was the Big Winch 360 with a wide variety on the menu. The food was delicious too.
Our favourite places were the Breakaways which we visited twice in our three days stay. This was by far the highlight of our visit. We also visited the following exciting places:
1. Underground Serbian Ortgodox church
2. Underground Catholic Church
3. Old Timers Mine
4. Umoona Opal Mine and Museum
It is very easy to get around Coober Pedy
Wow how stunning! Feels like you’re walking into the flinstones house then smacked with gorgeous modern interior mixed with the uniqueness of the underground! The host was super easy to communicate with, the cleaners do an unreal job- seriously spotless place not a spec of dust or dirt. If you know Coober Pedy, that’s damn near impossible! Super cosy, warm, beautiful interior and location was fantastic. Honestly the value for money is insane! My pup and I enjoyed our stay very much, I wish we booked for longer!
The Management staff Jo and Brent were very helpful and friendly, including driving me to and from the airport... also lending me a bicycle to better see and experience Coober Pedy... much appreciated!
I found the location very good... next to the Visitor Information Centre... and being just across the road from the Outback Bar and Grill, one of the few places in town to get breakfast, lunch, and dinner...
My room was roomy... cool during the hot days, even when the air conditioning wasn't on...
Didn't like a thing! It was the worst place we stayed in our 3 week holiday. We stayed at another place in Coober Pedy on our way North, same price point, entirely different experience. Cannot recommend this place in any way!! There are much better places (at the same price) to stay in Coober Pedy. Do not stay here! It was cold, dirty, delapitated and owner could not be contacted. It was absolutely pot luck (& a kind neighbour) who knew where they left the key and was able to let us in.
It was novelty staying in an underground room in Coober Pedy. The room provided a single and a double bed with a clean bathroom. The beds were comfortable and we appreciated clean towels on the second day of our stay. A communal kitchen allowed us to use the large fridge for storage and the microwave for cooking. There was also a large ceiling fan which helped to remove the stuffiness of a room with no windows.
This is a place perfectly in tune with its surroundings and a wonderful introduction to the joys of underground living. Extremely well appointed and spacious it is a stunning contrast to the post apocalyptic landscape that characterises most of the surrounding area. I can’t imagine a better place to stay on a road trip through Central Australia.
This was not a room but an appartmwnt. It was huge and underground. Now i have been to coober pedy before, and know how hard some things are to achieve. Some areas e.g the bathroom are not completely finished to 5 star level but over all, it is excellent. Would stay again.
What a perfect stay! We loved the charm of her property and the novelty of staying underground! So clean, beautifully furnished, and a real home away from home. We give it a big thumbs up, and would love to stay again when our adventures take us back through Coober Pedy!
Loved the experience of staying underground in Coober Pedy. It was a little bit out of the town but close giving us good space and privacy.
-Great views of the landscape and the township when you walk out the front.
Very friendly staff who gave us lots of information in regards what to see in Coober Pedy. Lovely spacious underground room with a comfortable bed and clean bathroom. Good wifi.
