We live in Cairns, which is only a 5.5-hour drive away from Townsville. We use the town for quick get aways and shopping not available in Cairns.
Plenty of good places to eat with lots of variety from drive through to quality restaurants.
Getting around is pretty easy if you have Google maps or similar. It's very spread out and there seems to be multiple ways to get to some destinations.

Loved the area with friendly people everywhere.
Loved the area with friendly people everywhere. Went to the Museum which my Great nephew really loved. All hands on. Went to Kirwan Bowling and had a great time with all our extended family.
Also went to the Tavern and had a wonderful meal which didn't cost too much.
Spent time on The Strand at the Waterpark and all the kids had a ball splashing around.

It is a nice city surrounded by some rainforest, farmland and bush. Lots to see and do. I loved the museums. I loved the botanical gardens; the hill overlooking Townsville is five minutes drive away from the hotel and you can drive or walk up it. The esplanade is worth the walk. Lots of places eat and drink along it.

The Strand Motel is the perfect location, right on the Strand and walking distance into town, with Coles right around the corner for any groceries you might need.
The staff were friendly, and while it was a little outdated, it was clean with a comfortable bed and cold air con - just what you need in Townsville!
The kitchette was small, but functional with a fridge/freezer of decent size.
The Cafe offered large servings and wasn't too overpriced for breakfast.
The room was comfortable, pool was nice, location was practical - walking distance to restaurants, bars etc - but not as enjoyable as the Strand. Be careful as there are two Oaks hotels on the same street! It is hard to know which is which when you are booking. We originally booked the wrong one which is a lot further away from the hub. We only found out when we happened to be driving past and saw there were two!
We stay here often. The rooms are really clean, comfortable and tasteful in design and functionality.
The staff, Jeanette and Peter are very pleasant and extremely helpful.
The location of the hotel on Palmer Street is perfectly, centrally located to restaurants, hotels and shops on Palmer Street and Flinders Street. The stadium is also an easy walk away.
The staff were amazing! and very freindly i highly recommend calling ahead to ask questions before booking. location of this hotel to facilities was great with Carpark available at rear. Walking distance to coles, shops and all the restaurants you will need. Other things they have are inground pool, bar, and bistro.
It is located in quite a convenient spot in Townsville CBD. The staff were friendly & we were able to check in early. There is parking on site. Good air conditioning. Price competitive for the level of accommodation. We were only staying overnight. Probably good value if you are travelling on a limited budget.
excellent location.. great variety of food outlets within walking distance . there are buses and taxi within walking distance.
room with a great view of the strand ,magnetic island and ocean. self contained 1 bedroom,. small but clean and comfortable.... on site secured parking .
wonderful warm welcome at reception. Staff so helpful and gave great suggestions for things to do. we stayed only one night but really enjoyed this hotel - beautiful pool - central location.
we drove to the lookout (staff suggestion) and the view /sunset was fabulous !
Great location and proximity to the Townsville Mater Hospital - unfortunately we were in lovely Townsville for medical reasons. Motel was close to Hotel and great breakfast place. Owners were very friendly and professional.
It is 5mins to the Strand and is surrounded with food outlets. Coles is just across the street. It's convenience and central to what Townsville has to offer. It is worth the price if you just want clean sheets and towel.
Great central location on The Strand & for walking the beach front.
Close to great food & coffee
Nice banana lounges by the pool
Fantastic sunrise views & view to Magnetic Island
Easy shuttle ride from airport
Quiet, comfortable rooms. Friendly staff. Everything you want after a long drive. I have stayed here in the past and always found it a good choice when passing through Townsville.
We checked in after hours which was an easy process. The location of the hotel cannot be beaten as it is central to all activates and eateries on the Strand.
It’s very spacious and the location is amazing. Right on the Strand. The place is very clean and tidy. It has everything we needed like kitchen and cookware.
Bed comfortable. Able to connect to Netflix a bonus, with good sized TV. Good central location on The Strand. Easy walking distance to local restaurants.
