Vilcabamba is a beautiful small town nestled in the Andes but at a lower elevation than most tourist destinations. The weather was warm and dry and the town is slightly quaint without the large chain stores found in most cities. However had no problem finding what I needed.
The real attraction is the countryside, visually spectacular IMHO. There is also a small river on the edge of town with trails that take you past groves of bamboo and other flora. The water is the best here in all of Ecuador as it contains colloidal silver and gold plus other beneficial minerals, maybe that's why they call it the "Valley of Longevity".

Vilcabamba is a totally unique spot.
Vilcabamba is a totally unique spot. The view of the mountains from town is breathtaking; the atmosphere on the square is calming and relaxing. All the food at the restaurants was either good or remarkably creative, especially Mestizo. All the people there were fabulously engaging and positive, even when we saw them other places. Every day the soup was to die for! It was a little disconcerting seeing more gringos than locals around town,, but nature trumps all human presence!

Cool, fun town with an active community.
Cool, fun town with an active community. Most nights there is a group event or lecture to attend. Often, we had to choose one event over another due to their frequency. That's a good thing, too, as it's a rather small town.
That said, it's quiet, peaceful and amazingly beautiful. We totally recommend it to our friends and family now. We loved it!

Vilcabamba is a unique place. 50 years ago it was a simple village with no canalisation a no infrastructure. Then from 1968 on came lots of foreigners mostly from North American and Europe and helped building this place to a small town with amenities that you do not find easily in other Ecuadorian places. Of course prices at the local french bakery are a lot higher but it is no obligation to buy there, it is a privilege. Vilcabamba offers two worlds in one, you have the traditional ecuadorian offers and the ones run by foreigners. People are living together here peacefully and fertilize each other. You will hardly find another place in Latin America where so many inhabitants are speaking English thanks to initiatives that were started by some of the expatriates many years ago. It really seems that the foreigners living here are happy with Vilcabamba and the people from here are with "their" foreigners.

This is a great little town - full of fabulous restaurants and a diverse population - with Ecuadorians, many retired gringos, and plenty spiritual hippies. People love to sit outside in cafes and the plaza is lively. Food is great - can get everything from burgers and pizza and crepes, to organic, vegan, etc. Great bakeries and ice cream shops as well. It has a truly small town feel - friendly and accessible - with plenty diversity.

Small town with great views of surrounding mountains and...
Small town with great views of surrounding mountains and nature and the food in the town is definitely catered to tourists however it is very tasty! I will go back to Vilcabamba for some much needed relaxation in the future!
I had an exellent stay in Avalon House in Vilcabamba. Anja, the owner was super frindly, open-hearted and gave me brilliant recommendations for my time in Vilcabamba. She told me great places for doing Yoga, having a massage, renting bicycles, having a horse riding trip or nice places for hikes. I felt super welcomed and the atmosphere is so peaceful. The yoga room is wonderful as well. Everything is really clean and designed with love. I definitely recommend this place!!
It's just a really lovely place with charming staff and a beautiful garden. The room looked onto the pool and was very quiet. I liked the fact that it had fly screens so you could leave the windows open at night without the issue of bugs. I also liked the hammock outside on the veranda - one for each room.
It's a very small town so everything is walking distance from the hotel. There were no issues with hot water, and WiFi worked well in our room o the second floor.
First, you need to know that there was nothing about the staff or the physical aspects of the hostel that were in anyway bad. It was exactly what I expected from an Ecuadorian hostel. The beds were very comfortable. The staff was very friendly. The restaurant next door served a good breakfast (not included by the way, which was not expected because the room was $20 a night). Do not hold any of my disappointment against the hotel itself. They were wonderful.
Very friendly and helpful staff, an excellent breakfast and a nice quit room. The facilities include a swimming pool, Turkish and Finnish sauna and a hot tube whirlpool. A hammock in front of my room to relax. Couldn’t be better.
The hotel includes a restaurant for lunch and dinner. I had an excellent diner.
The hotel is excellently based for walks and hikes in the mountains along the river.
Highly recommended.
Anya is a goddess. She runs the place. And offers Kundalini Yoga Mondays & Thursdays 7 am. The ambience is as if emanating from a soothing incense stick. Of course Vilcabamba has a lot to do with it but she makes Vilcabamba even better. Inside the walls, the hillside view is velvet with el Greco skies at sunset. The place is 90% wooden, soothingly organic to the feet. I could go on. You get the drift.
The cabins are situated in a beautiful space, right by the river. You are trully in nature, whilst being a short, beautiful walk from amazing Vilcabamba.
The cabins are beautifully designed, and have everything you require to be comfortable - kitchen equipment, comfortable beds, delicious water.
The hosts are really friendly and responsive.
I recommend staying here.
Richard helped us get settled and was available for all of our questions about Ecuador and the area around Vilcabamba. He speaks fluent English. We loved all of the custom touches in the house - the woodwork, colorful paint and decorative tile and stone. And the garden is beautiful, too. The property is a short walk from town. Very highly recommended!
Our stay was wonderful! The hosts were friendly, helpful and informative. The Alpha House location is perfect - close to town, but on a beautiful private property with trees, flowers, birds and butterflies. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and evenings were quiet and peaceful. We hope to return for another visit in the future!
I felt very quickly at home in this hostel. Breakfast was always freshly prepared. There were fresh juices and fruits. The coffee and bread was very tasty. When I visit Vilcabamba again, I hope Hostel Jardin has a room available. Everything was very nicely designed, the courtyard is beautiful with many trees and plants.
Its super affordable. The garden is enchanting and charming and the common areas are quite nice and varied. I loved the hammocks, the pool, and the breakfast. The best feature for me was how close it is to the center square, which made exploring Vilcabamba super convenient and easy.
Very nice contact to Alicia. Acc. is in nature reserve with hiking possibilities and only 10min walking to the center of Vilcabamba. River closeby to jump in. Nice basic room and shared kitchen and terrace. Hammock to chillout. It's a quiet place with only nature sound.
Intimate, home-like stay with a very welcoming and relaxing common area (inner patio, the pool and the kitchen). Yeleny, the owner is a host, who wants you to feel like home and it does! If you come to Vilcabamba to relax and slow down, it's definitely a place to stay.
What a pleasant oasis in lovely Vilcabamba. Our room was spacious ,a fun glass rain shower, big fluffy towels, a comfortable bed, lots of wall plugs, hooks to hang things, and a row of hangers! Anya was so welcoming . The community kitchen was also well set up.
A beautiful old adobe Ecuadorian house, lovingly restored and thoughtfully appointed, we felt more like we were staying in a boutique hotel than a budget hostel. Great location, great views from our room, kind and considerate host, highly recommended
Great location. Very good restaurant. Safe parking. The garden is great with a beautiful pool. There was a 'fiesta' in town, so it was hard to sleep until 1am, but this wasn't the hotel fault.
shower and rooms were very good and the bed and it was located on the central park. depending on the part of the hotel (if at the back) very little people noise from the outside
