A lovely area which provides some lovely walks of varying lengths (downloadable from the Langholm Walks website) and some interesting history. It is a quiet and peaceful and can be used as a base to visit attractions further afield.

At the junction of many roads so easy to go off exploring in different directions. Some beautiful parkland with bridges over the river - and open public toilets! Helpful tourist office with lots of leaflets. Would recommend the prehistoric trail of Eskdale but you may need boots and a bit of energy to get up the steep hills to the forts. People friendly and a useful bakery and large co-op. Lots of buses stopping so may be suitable for a visit by public transport.

The castle & racecourse by the river were lovely, I though areas were a little run-down, but when exploring the town with dogs, you would find those areas. The river walk was lovely, & the town itself was wonderful. We tried to eat in the Pub in town, the barman said we could let the dogs off the leads in the back, but then a young woman told us that we couldn't, this put us off staying for something to eat, which was a shame as the Vegetarian menu looked wonderful.

Langholm is a beautiful town soaked in history.

Langholm is a beautiful town soaked in history. The lovely river Esk runs right through the town. There are several lovely walks in the area, my favourite is round the Duchess's Bridge. There are a few places to eat all very reasonably priced. We had a lovely meal in the Douglas Hotel, the food was excellent, just a small point I felt that the waitresses who served could have been a bit more friendly. I will definately return to Langholm but perhaps choose other accommodation.

    What a lovely little town.

What a lovely little town. Friendly locals and lots to see and do. Douglas Hotel had a lovely restaurant and the food was superb. The bar area was friendly and vibrant. Wish I had been able to have a little look in the lovely shops I saw but as it was the weekend I missed opening hours.

We went in search of family history and met some lovely helpful people. Margaret at the Langholm Centre was so generous with her time and knowledge and so energetic and enthusiastic. She even drove us to a few places. Thank you Margaret! Everyone we spoke to was helpful and interested! Including our hosts at The Douglas Hotel. Thanks a million. We didn’t want to leave!

We stayed at the Douglas Hotel one night as went biking in Mabie Forest and Newcastleton following day. The host met me at the door of the hotel which was really lovely and took me to the room then went to meet my boyfriend who was parking the car he then showed him to the room and went to the bar to get us a drink each, made us feel very welcome and nothing was a problem. Meal in restaurant was perfect, homemade lasagne and creme brûlée best I’ve tasted! Cannot fault this hotel and very good value for money!

From the moment we entered the Crown Hotel to meet our friends Chris and Janice we were made to feel so so welcome…Everyone was very friendly (staff and locals) and it had a homely feel… Even “Peggy” our cockapoo was given the VIP treatment ( sausages and ham treats) and may have a new boyfriend in “Boris” the resident dog… A special mention must go out to Dave the barman.. a very funny man and probably the “Best barman” in Scotland 😉. Thank you all for making our stay so memorable.

The new owners Sam and Steve, are very enthusiastic and spent a long time just chatting with us. They are obviously trying very hard to transform the hotel into their vision and they have made a good start. I am looking forward to seeing the completed project! Sam also very kindly is on the lookout for some china for me which definitely goes above and beyond the call of duty!

We had a pleasant weekend stay. It's a lovely cabin, decent sized rooms, spacious and very cosy and supplied with everything you could possibly need. There wasn't much in Langholm itself for us, but it's just a stones throw away from Gretna gateway and we took a drive to the lake district which was about an hr and half.

Room is amazing and the land lady she is an absolute star. Very helpful. Super place and great breakfast to prepare you for a long walk. The room is super clean and bigger than the norms with a fantastic shower and fluffy towels; 5 star hotel. Also the bike parking at the back helps a lot.

We needed a one night stay to break up our long return journey and the Eskdale proved to be a very good choice. The food, dinner and breakfast, were excellent and the staff were very helpful. We didn't really have time to explore outside Langholm which on the surface looked a bit quiet.
