Company information

A living convent is defined as one with a continuously resident religious community. Our sisters have lived on this site in the city of York for over three centuries now and still live at The Bar Convent today. We were one of the earliest educational establishments for young women in the country and played an important role in the history of York. Our Grade I Listed buildings today receive visitors from all over the world. We welcome those of all faiths and none to our award-winning guesthouse, café, gift shop, beautiful garden and meeting rooms.

Property information

We're proud to offer peace, quiet and friendly service in our magnificent heritage surroundings. Our Grade 1 Listed building houses a hidden chapel, beautiful atrium and an incredibly rich history. We offer fabulous cooked and continental breakfasts - awarded a Visit England Breakfast Award in 2022. Our modern, comfortable guest rooms are all en-suite.

Neighbourhood information

We have our own local attractions within The Bar Convent! Our exhibition and chapel are popular with visitors and you don't even have to leave the building to visit them! We are located just outside the city walls, by the Micklegate Bar entrance, and are well-placed for doing York's sights. Most places are within a 10- to 20-minute walk. There are characterful pubs and cafes in Micklegate, the road leading to the river on the other side of the Bar, while the station is a handy five minutes walk away.
