Pisa is an interesting city in itself, besides being a good centre for visiting Lucca and probably Florence (avoid much of the crowds!). It is flat, as is Lucca, so good for those who want to go to Italy but find climbing up and down hills hard work (Siena/Perugia). You need good shoes to walk around Italian cities because the paving is authenticallly rough and uneven.
I would certainly invest in a good map of the city, rehterht an the one provided generously by the Tourist Office.

I visited Pisa as an add on to 3 days in Florence as my flight landed in Pisa from Luton. I therefore booked to stay for a 2 night stay which only really gave me one full day in Pisa.
This was just right for the leaning Tower and the buildings of the Miracoli Square including 2 museums, the Bapistry, the Duomo and the compasanto. The Duomo is stunning and the hilight but the leaning tower is a memerising sight. I managed to spend a good 5 hours there including lunch on the terrace at the museum and a timed climb up the tower booked for later in the day. (you have to book a timed slot to climb)
With hindsight i did regret not having at least one more full day in Pisa as i would have liked to have seen the rest of the city including the Botanical Gardens which was shut during my visit.
Please be aware that it gets busy so it may be worth booking the leaning tower climb online before you go.

To be honest, there is not a huge amount to view in Pisa as a tourist. Compared to Florence and Siena it feels more like a 'proper' town rather than a tourist-trap. That's not to say it isn't worth a visit; it is! The Leaning Tower is so famous it is a must-see if you are in the area. The Duomo and associated attractions are also very special for their architecture and are worth a view (in my opinion). Pisa airport is close to the city and cheaper to fly in to from London (and less busy) than flying to other Tuscan destinations, so I recommend it.
The train from the airport to the city is easy and costs about €7 but if you are more than one person take a taxi, which should work out cheaper! Also, we booked a train ticket from Pisa to Florence in advance... big mistake. There was no need to book and buying local was simple and cheap; just €8 per person. It takes an hour on the train (if you chose carefully) and if you think that the Airport to Pisa train takes 5 minutes and costs a similar amount, then one of them is good value and one isn't! I'll let you work out, which-is-which :-)
We stayed in a small hotel (Amalfitana) close to the attractions which was adequate, not great, but had a brilliant restaurant attached named "La Corte di San Leonardo"... we loved the food here so try it out, even if you do not stay at the hotel.
Don't stay too long... unless you use Pisa as a base to travel out to other towns, there's not much to do.

The leaning tower was spectacular as well as all the other buildings alongside. The 3km walk along the old city walls was also wonderful. The whole city is just full of architecture and history. I think a 2-3 day trip is a perfect amount of time. If you are there longer you can catch a bus to the coast for 2 euro or a train to Florence for about 10 euro.

Book restaurants in advance and any of the sites you want to enter. Very crowded between 11.00-18.00 around the major sites but much nicer outside these times. Can recommend Bruno's Bar for a drink or 2 and L'Ostelliono for value sandwiches that are a true delight.
5 euro to walk the top of the city walls is well worth it and so is the botanical gardens to avoid the big crowds. its fairly easy to navigate the old town but don't even think about driving unless you have 2 wheels or a guaranteed parking spot. Don't pay 8 euro for a bottle of beer in view of the tower instead just walk a few meters away and save 50%.

For us we only stayed a day in the city but still saw all the key sites. We had children in tow and didn’t want to stay any longer cut could have easily for a couple more days. Lots of lovely restaurants and bars to choose from. Good selection of shops too.
We had one day and night in Pisa ahead of flying home after 2 weeks in Italy. It’s fair to say that everything outdid our expectations. The city was lovey. A real university vibe with all sorts of lively squares for a drink / food. All very compact and walkable and airport v close
The hotel was lovely. Family owned on a quiet street but right in the old town. Good sized room which was quiet with very comfortable bed and excellent air conditioning. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. Breakfast very good and good value
Rooms were extremely spacious, clean and comfortable. Bed was really good. Pillows were soft. Bathroom was really big, which I did not expect. Breakfast was very nice, superb. Lemon cake was exceptional. Ample parking space. The bus stop was right outside the hotel, which made our trip to see the Leaning Tower very smooth. On our way back, we walked for around 40 min and we were at the hotel. There is also a good café right behind the hotel. All in all, an excellent option to stay in Pisa.
Location is PERFECT! Literally 3 minutes walk from Pisa tower and other main attractions,,,
Meta at the reception was such a nice, friendly man, we appreciate him…
Room and bed sheets were clean, generally the room was well maintained and not old! Also there are many restaurants, cafes and supermarkets right down the hotel so it is all accessible within reach,,, Hotel offers great value for it’s price…
Best location to arrive at night. Just take a shuttle from airport and stop at Pisa Centrale, cross the street and you will find the hotel! Room really nice, comfortable and cleaned, The receptionist, fantastic! (polite, quick, good info about the city). You can leave your luggage and explore the city during the check out day. No doubts. We will repeat if we come back to Pisa!
Superb location for walking into Pisa city centre and less than 10mins to the airport on foot. Very clean, modern apartment with all finishing touches considered. Communication was great and the info link sent thru was fantastic . Totally agree that Pizza Paradise is the best pizza place too well worth a visit ! Thanks for having us - 10/10 from us !
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, Hotel Miratorre exceeded expectations on all levels. Immaculate room, great breakfast, friendly and helpful hotel staff and a 10 minute slow walk to Pisa Tower and most sights. My 4th trip to Italy and can honestly say the best hotel stayed, and a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.
The beds are very comfortable. We stayed in 5 different hotels, and this was the most affordable place, and it had the most comfortable bed. The staff was extremely nice with the exception of one person. Mirko was amazing and went above and beyond to help us by explaining things to us as this was our first time in Italy.
Super location , halfway between the station and the city centre. Friendly staff with good restaurant recommendations. Super clean room , just be aware at the front of the hotel you could hear Pisa in the street below . If you want silence ask to be at the back of the hotel .
We really appreciated how clean was the room, that we had everything we needed (fresh towels, hairdryer, tea) and also how close the hotel is to the Pisa Tower and the old city. Will definitely recommend this hotel as it is a great value for money.
Exactly what we needed. Facilities were great. Hosts were very accommodating. We stayed the first night on arriving in Pisa and the last night of before we left Pisa. We’d travelled through Italy. The lady even took
us to the airport. Fabulous
The place was exceptional. Very close to the Tower of Pisa. And alot of restaurants around. The host was very accommodating. Easily one of the best hotels we’ve been to. Will rebook this hotel when we come back to Pisa.
A real hotel with spacious room and adequate furnishings. Spotlessly clean, attention given to detail. The staff are kind and helpful. Location is walking distance to the Pisa Tower, Airport and Train Station.
The staff was very thoughtful, the hotel has an amazing location, really close to the pisa tower and the room was very comfortable. The breakfast was very good and the billing of the hotel is very beautiful.
Really good location to the tower of Pisa, but not close to train station or airport.
The room was nice, bathroom was the best I've had in italy.
Staff were really nice and helpful
Nice and cozy place. 300 m train station and from there you can find to airport for 5€ by shuttle.
The hotel located near Pisa Tower.
