We would like to stay another day or two in Wakkanai the next time we go and visit. As it was we spent less than an hour in Cape Soya, which was basically our main objective, the northernmost point in Hokkaido.
We enjoyed the park near the Gate of Ice and Snow as well as the observation tower. The view of the city from that vantage point was very nice.

It is situated at the northmost town of Hokkaido.
It is situated at the northmost town of Hokkaido. Staying next to eki help with transportation and moving around.
Famous for their seafood, Cape Soya for her black cow steak. Winter is a nice get away for busy people.
Despite local trying to promote tourism here, lack of interest by both tourist as well as local.
Summer is good time to drop by. The whole place is covered with wild daisy flowers. The temperature is very comfortable. Wakkanai park, one can still see late sakura here.
Noshapu sunset is beautiful.
If one is lucky, you may even observe parhelion or sun dog.
If you are taking the ferry to Rebun island, do go to the dock to see swimming oracs. I had observed hundreds but they did not surface due to fear of been hunted.
I like Wakkanai, both summer as well as winter.

It's a lovely place at the very northernmost part of Hokkaido. Highly recommend having a car, bit be careful of local wildlife, especially outside Wakkanai proper. Also recommend the White Path, though it's a bit out of the way (near Cape Soya); beautiful landscape and so many Hokkaido deer.
Awesome location.
Literally visible from the JR Wakkanai station.
Close to banks, a few restaurants, but best to buy groceries at the Seicomart in the JR station.
The parking services even made accommodation to lock my bike up (not necessary but was raining heavily).
Hotel provided gowns and shoes, vending machines on most floors, free ice machines, and a good aircon (not really necessary either).
The hotel was right next to the train station, which had bike rentals. The property had bike rentals and moped rentals. Located close to Times Car rental. Utilizing these rentals I was able to see everything Wakkanai had to offer.
I met many locals and other travelers in the lobby. Shared drinks and even went sight seeing with them. The staff was super helpful even though I don't know Japanese.
- Check in was smooth and staff is very friendly
- Nice common area right beside the check in desk
- Right in front of JR Wakkanai station!
- Seicomart conbini in front of the hostel
- Free parking (3 minute walk from the hostel)
- Small little storage unit inside of the bed (they provide you the keys)
We had a great view of the ocean with large windows. I enjoyed the buffet in the hotel- there was lots of food I wanted to eat. It felt luxurious but comfortable to stay at the Surfeel. There is an airport shuttle bus that stops at the ferry terminal across the road.
A very well-run and established accommodation in Wakkanai. I would definitely stay there again if I come to Wakkanai. The place is clean, the staff is friendly and nice, and breakfast is good. The place is quite lively with people hanging out in the dining room.
Clean and comfortable. Great location near the bus/ferry/train; also close to restaurants, the breakwater dome, and Wakkanai Park. Breakfast was simple but delicious, I really enjoyed it. Staff were super friendly and I loved the atmosphere.
The facilities were clean, location is good as well and you can request for a room facing the sea. Owner is very friendly and understanding, and uses a translating device so non-Japanese residents don’t have to worry about language barrier.
This is an old Japanese style hostel with a traditional Japanese room and common bath and toilette facility. The room was small but generally ok. But with the price, you can probably find a better hotel in the city. Breakfast is good.
The staff was very helpful. They explained the facilities, the keys, and the designated parking area to me clearly in simple Japanese so I could understand. The bed was comfortable.
It is nice overall, and it's very convenient that it is just in front of the JR station. You can even use the public bath of a nearby hotel if you tell them you stay here :)
