The apartment is close to town and looks nice on the outside. After that though its all downhill, the word basic crops up a lot. As has been said accommodation in Fray Bentos is crazy expensive and basically I wouldn't bother staying in the town at all because its not a pretty place and there aren't great places to eat either. The museum is well worth seeing and well put together and the Ramblas is a nice walk

Fray Bentos is a jewel in Uruguay. The city was the home to the biggest meat packing industry in the country, where Fray Bentos products were made and exported to Europe. As such, it has a very visible english and german heritage. A visit to the Museum of Industrial Revolution, as is called now the old meat processing facility, is a trip in time to the first half of the 20th century.
Modern Fray Bentos is home to a school of engineering called UTEC, and to the biggest paper pulp factory of the country, a few miles away.
Two days is enough to visit the city and its surroundings. A car is very helpful, although you can get there by public transportation (bus)

Quiet. Pleasant waterfront.
Quiet. Pleasant waterfront. Pretty plazas. interesting remains of the meat industry.
We stayed for 24 hours and that proved sufficient but we were glad that we visited.
We ate cheaply and well at a roadside stall adjacent to Calle 18 Julio.

I really recommend visiting the Fray Bentos factory which is...
I really recommend visiting the Fray Bentos factory which is now disused but of historical interest. Anyone who has opened a tin of corned beef will know it. The tour was great although in Spanish. the outskirts of the town look like something out of the Wild West and then suddenly there are trees and parks and our hotel was on the front along the Ramblas. quite an intriguing place where not many visitors go.

A delightful colonial style hotel. Very quiet and peaceful. Nice rooms. Good shower. A small swimming pool surrounded by foliage and homely nicknacks. Convenient location, easy walk into the town and about 40 min pleasant walk along the riverside to the world heritage site museum (easy drive too). Street parking with no problems. Good wifi. Breakfast.
Value for the money. The hotel is modest in its facilities, but clean, and the personnel was fantastic. Breakfast was as expected, It can be improved but have to keep in mind that for the reasonable price we paid it was OK.
A reasonable level for a hotel in a small Uruguayan town. A mystery to a foreigner is the lack of diversity in the fresh fruit but that is par for the course in Uruguay.
Proprietor welcoming and helpful. Comfortable bed. Living room/kitchen contains all essential requirements. Very friendly dogs!
Situated close to centre of Fray Bentos.
