Thistle Hotel, hotel in Pietermaritzburg

Situated in Pietermaritzburg, 1.7 km from KwaZulu-Natal Museum, Thistle Hotel features accommodation with a terrace, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar.

We didn't stay. Place is downtown. This place has no safe parking. Surrounded by drunk and shady people. So we had to forfeit our booking money and book ourselves into another guesthouse which was more pleasant and secure.

Pietermaritzburg, once an attractive, clean town, with numerous historic buildings and home to a number of well-established schools, is looking shabby and uncared for. I have no idea why anyone would want to head there - we were there for a tennis tournament - and couldn't wait to get on our way and back home!

PMB is a traditional city in South Africa.

PMB is a traditional city in South Africa. I stayed there for work, so I did not really drive around and spend time in the city. I enjoyed the Olive & Oil Restaurant at Cascades Life style Centre. PMB is not that big so to get around is easy.

    Pietermaritzburg has historic buildings.

Pietermaritzburg has historic buildings. The architecture is varied and interesting. Though the town center is quite busy, as you move further from town it is quiet and laid back. There are newer developments outside but close to town, like Hesketh estate. There is so much potential for further growth and development for the town.

We did not get to explore Pietermaritzburg itself but we did visit the midlands which is conveniently situated nearby. Very beautiful with lots of lovely stops along the way. Highly recommend the midlands meander.

This place exceeded my expectations and value for your money. The bed was so comfortable with crisp clean sheets and towels. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Location is great and we could enjoy the city view at night. What we liked about the place is that you are not confined to your room. There are outdoor places you can sit and enjoy the surroundings. This place is really nice and much better than most 5 star hotels. Will definitely stay here again next time we are in Pietermaritzburg.

We loved everything- delicious breakfasts, comfortable room and exceptional service. My client in Pietermaritzburg did not provide lunch so Gys provided me with a lunch pack each day - chicken, cheese and mayo roll, muffin, bar one, orange juice and water. They have a backup power system so you have lights during load shedding and there's a generator should you need more power.

There was an mugging attempt in front of the hotel. Could not find parking and had to park on the streets. We were ambushed by 3 men trying to take our luggage. It was a mess outside. Looters everywhere and beggars sitting outside the entrance. Now I see they are trying to debit my card after paying R500 deposit. Please assist

Helga was the perfect host. Thoughtful, discreet and very attentive to all of our needs. I would certainly recommend that everyone stay at Casa Mia if they find themselves in Pietermaritzburg due to its central location, ease of access and quiet neighbourhood.
