Excellent tour. If you are diabled and canna walk up a few stairs then you get a reduced entry free as ye'll nae be able to get in a couple of the rooms, as disabled yu get a carer in free. Audio guide which is verra guid as well. Staff will take you between floors via ellavater. It's a wee bit tight if ye are in a class3 scooter, class 2 and most power chairs shouldna ha nae worries. Lights kept low in the building, screen blinds on all windows to protect the tapestries. Nae photo's inside the building for the same reason. It's plenty light enough to see where ye are. Some awesome tapestries
The palace is lovely. The audio guide talked about the various stages of building at the castle, and that made the tour even more interesting. By far, Mary's chamber was most interesting when it came to the story of her secretary who met his end at the hands of Mary's husband--chilling.
Don't expect to spend more than a few hours at the Palace. The route you take through the palace hits the historical royal apartments, but only covers one floor of this multiple floor palace. Take the time to explore the ruins of the abbey and to walk along the garden path. The Queen's Gallery is in a separate building from the palace, and may or may not be worth the extra cost of admission, depending on your taste on what's being presented. The cafeteria inside the palace grounds serves good quality food at decent prices, so don't feel you need to limit yourself to premade sandwiches.
This palace is good, especially the really old parts where Mary Queen of Scots lived. The ruins are worth seeing at the back. The tea room is very nice for lunch or tea break. I had a great scone with cream there and I think you can get into that cafe without a ticket.
This tour is rather a disappointment as many of the rooms are similar with very dark tapestries lining the walls. The bedroom and living quarters for Mary Queen of Scots is by far the best area and worth a visit. Compared to Buckingham Palace and Sandringham House, this Scottish counterpart is a bit short on the wow factor.
