Hotel in Prainha, Praia
Located on the Santiago Island, in front of the ocean and just 200 metres from the city's main beach, Pestana Tropico Ocean & City Hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool with sunbeds, meeting rooms and... My wife and I absolutely loved the stay here. It was everything we needed and more from the reception at check-in to the room, wi-fi and the helpful staff. One of the staff becky was particularly helpful with recommendations for places to visit and things to do (we took her advice and went to Kebra Canela beach and had a good time) . I only wish we had booked more days as we previously stayed at another hotel in the city centre (plateau) before moving to this hotel for two night.

Hotel in Palmarejo, Praia
Situated in Praia, 600 metres from Cova Figueira Beach, Chez Maria Julia Boutique Hotel features a bar and views of the sea. After 2 weeks on Santiago this is the only place I genuinely would recommend. First of all, the location. The famous Plateau is good only for a very short visit. This area is much nicer, safer, more relaxed. There are a lot of beautiful and colorful houses around, as well as many really nice restaurants / bars and the central beach (which is really good!) - all within 15 min walk max. The owner of the hotel really pays attention to every single detail. The staff is not just friendly, they are also very professional and truly understand what does it mean to work in HoReCa (which is rarely the case on Santiago unfortunately!) My stay was super comfortable and I appreciated that everyone was going above and beyond to make me feel welcomed and relaxed. I was very touched when I didn’t feel too well and the owner made sure to constantly check on me and provide me with everything and anything needed. The restaurant and bar by the hotel are very nice as well, overall it felt like a very fair value for money and I wish I’d make this place my main base during my trip.

Santiago was an interesting and scenic island, more so than the standard tourist locations of Sal and Boa Vista. We found some good local restaurants and enjoyed many trips out although the southerly location meant long drives every day, so it may be better to stay in the middle of the island. The town of Praia is spreading fast but many building projects have been abandoned whilst new ones are starting up. The urban sprawl is depressing and much infilling is required.
Very lively little town. Beach is wonderful. Some good places to eat and enjoy music (something quintessential in Cabo Verde). Recommend Buzio (food - best value and music on several days a week - not on Monday- guaranteed on Thursday and Friday- check the other days). We also enjoyed the Santiago Lounge (drinks, snacks, swimming and playing Oril - don't miss the sunset!)
A great small capital city with bustling local life. Some nice sights to see, but interacting with the locals was the most rewarding aspect of visiting. Praia is very easy to walk around, though best to take a taxi after dusk. Expect to pay between 700-1000 CVE ($7-10) for a taxi to/from the airport and 150-200 CVE ($1.5-2) for a taxi around Praia. There are some nice restaurants with the freshest seafood. Best of all, get out of Praia and see other parts of the island of Santiago, e.g. Cidade Velha, Tarrafal, Boa Entrada, Rui Vaz. Renting a car with a driver for a day will cost approximately US$70.
Lots if local colour - vibrant market and local people going about their business. No mainstream food chains here. Limited selection of restaurants, we ate both nights at Pingo Pingo. A couple in our early 50's who have often travelled and wandered " slightly" off the beaten track we felt safe during the day and at night other travellers may not be as comfortable. Local transport on the Yazz was great, cheap, colourful and at times squashed! We used the Yazz to visit Tarrafal and other costal locations, a sort of north island tour. We travelled holding at different times, shopping bags, a buckets of seafood and a baby on our knees, making it memorable! Everyone was polite and friendly although little English is spoken we got by with our Portuguese phrase book although the island of Santiago is mainly Creole speaking. Don't stay on the beaches, take a hopper flight and see the diversity of the islands and enjoy the experience.
Tarrafal has the only real, sandy beach on the island of Santiago. It was clean and beautiful. The market was worth seeing, and there are several small restaurants where you can eat Cachupa, the local speciality, and much more. The food and the drinks are inexpensive and good. Tarrafal is a small, very safe town. You can walk around any time of the day and night, without problems. Mind you, most bars and restaurants close at 11 p.m. No nightlife there! There is an interesting museum outside the town, 20-30 minutes walk away. It was the concentration camp for opponents of Salazar, the Portuguese dictator, and the prisoners came from Cabo Verde, Angola, Portugal and Guinea. It opened in 1936 and it was closed after the Carnation revolution in 1974, and the prisoners were released. It became a museum in 2016. Immediately after entering the gates, I felt the agony and suffering that had been going on here for so many years, just like I felt when visiting concentration camps from Hitler's age in Poland and Germany. I recommend a visit there, anyway.
Plateau is a charming area to spend half a day, though it's eerily quiet on Sundays and the beaches aren't particularly pleasant. There's live music every night on the main street there too. Cidade Velha is also well worth an afternoon. Do not spend more than a day on Santiago though - Assomada and Tarrafal are overrated, and you should maximise your time on other islands.
We would go again anytime and recommend it to everyone! Magnificent experience! Tarrafal beach is the most beautiful beach of Santiago island. The Vista Mar hotel and restaurant are both excellent! The hotel is very new and modern. Rooms are stylish and very clean. Very comfortable bed, excellent air conditioning. You can see the whole Tarrafal beach from the balconies of the hotel, which is lovely. Actually, the Tarrafal beach is only 100 meters (maybe even less) from the hotel. There is an excellent restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel offering delicious seafood dishes, wide range of local specialities, Italian and international dishes, perfect desserts and all this for a very reasonable price. The restaurant has live music and magnificent singers. The singer had such a voice, absolutely amazing! Both the staff of the hotel and the restaurant are outstanding, efficient and professional, but at the same time limitlessly helpful and welcoming.
Tarrafal is great for a couple of days to rest on the beach. There is one hike that you can do with a guide or you can dive. We spend some time in the Santiago Lounge Bar which is a great place to chill and admire the sunset. The city is not that beautiful but the beach and the people there are worth to stop.
If you are looking for a "non-touristy" location this is it! Authentic and real, great people, very safe. A perfect place to relax if you want to get away from busy places. Santiago Lounge Bar was the highlight of our trip. Beach is small, beautiful & not crowded in January.
Nice located hotel (10min by foot to plateau, 5 min to the main beaches by taxi, ca. 1€) The rooms are modern, clean and well equipped with a fridge, television. The room service was good and caring. We enjoyed especially the breakfast on the terrace which was diverse and freshly prepared. The restaurant has a daily changing menu with is worth to try. In general the service was really attentive, helpful and gave good tips for the stay. I would recommend this hotel for anybody who wants to stay on Praia/Santiago.
The spacious apartment is very tastefully furnished and spotless clean. From the terrace you have a beautiful view of the sea and nothing blocks your way. I would say it’s the best view in town. The area is safe and peaceful, you can reach the beach Quebra Canela strolling along the promenade and there are some really nice cafes and restaurants close by in Av. Santiago in Palmarejo. The hosts are very lovely and helpful and provide you with all information you need for your stay!
Villa Concetta is an amazing experience, if you like the ocean and the culture of Cape Verde go there and enjoy the time with Bruno, his friends and the atmosphere in a traditional village. Breakfast is simply great and location is one of the most colorful in Santiago. Rooms are clean, the view from the patio is great and there are superb restaurants nearby. Highly recommend.
Tarrafal
Greatest appartement we had on Santiago. Simple but good facilities in the apartments, and the balcony is just WOW - greatest view and sunset!! Also Delfim is a very sweet and charming (English speaking!) host, who is always available to help. Definitely recommend! City centre with shops and restaurants and beach only 3min walk away. :)
Fazenda, Praia
I highly recommend this hostel, if you are staying in Praia it will be your best choice. Perfect location, right in the city center. The owner of the hostel, Carlos, is a very nice person who will certainly help you organize your stay on the island of Santiago. Well-equipped rooms, access to the kitchen. Definitely worth it.
Tarrafal
delicious breakfast (incl. fresh homemade traditional Catchupa) on the roof top terrace with a nice view hotel is located within walking distance from the town center, restaurants and beach hotel staff made sure we were picked up from Santiago airport and then transferred back by a very kind taxi driver called Stylee
Very good hotel, top quality - perfect to start a roundtrip in the South of Santiago. Very friendly stuff and a helpful management director. Breakfast buffet is extraordinary. And the large pool is really a big plus! Also the live music in the evening.
Simple and fast communication. Very helpful and nice Andy together with Maria made it easier for us to travel and stay on the island of Santiago. The accommodation was clean and pleasant. Everything you need is available in the surroundings.
Attentive and welcoming owners. Very good breakfast and excellent location including clean rooms! I love the relaxful terrace where I had a breathtaking view of the city of Tarrafal de Santiago. I will surely come back!
Great hotel for arriving in santiago, comfortable bed, and very friendly and helpful staff!
very clean close to local restaurants beautiful scenery
Cheap, close to car rental, clean and comfortable room
The staff did everything in their power to make our stay enjoyable. The ambiance is so cool, breathtaking and unique - it looks even better in person. The restaurant is top tier and the amenities are a great touch. It is pretty far from Praia (about an hour and 20 minute drive), so plan accordingly. The Tarrafel area is very nice. I look forward to staying here again in the future. This place stays booked, so I advise booking far in advance.
Plenty of space, ideal for families; also quite close to the beach and the centre; would have stayed longer but they were fully booked
