The Bottle Kiln Wetherspoon 4 stars

Hotel in Harwich

The Bottle Kiln Wetherspoon is situated in Harwich and has a bar and a garden. Lovely comfortable beds. Rooms were soundproofed so they were lovely and quiet. We had lots of space in the room too. Staff were so helpful from the ladies who clean the rooms to the staff at check-in.

The Last Post Wetherspoon Hotel 3 stars

Hotel in Southend-on-Sea

Located in Southend-on-Sea, 200 metres from South Essex College, The Last Post Hotel features air-conditioned rooms and private parking. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. Interesting decor; large, clean, comfortable rooms. Just a short walk away from the waterfront where you can take a nice walk. Conveniently located across the street from the train station. The adjacent Wetherspoon pub is huge, fun and has a nice menu (we ate breakfast there; even our vegan was happy).

Roslin Beach Hotel 4 stars

Hotel in Southend-on-Sea

With lovely views of the Thames Estuary, this Southend-on-Sea hotel offers free Wi-Fi, treatment rooms, and free parking. Absolutely fantastic staff, and that breakfast! Loved every single bit of our stay. We loved the bed so much, we bought the topper online that same day to be able to sleep that well at home too :) In Southend, this is probably the only place to stay where it's not full of screaming drunk beach guests.

FAQs about hotels in Essex

Close to London, Yet Far Removed

Half-timbered houses lining village greens. Picturesque estuaries and sweeping countryside. Traditional seaside resorts. Affluent Essex has all of this and more.

Its county town Chelmsford has a flint cathedral and waterfront shopping complex. To the east Maldon is a pretty estuary town with a colourful high street, and further south is Southend-on-Sea, a popular seaside town with a good helping of fish and chip shops and the world’s longest pier.

Another pier with amusements is in Clacton-on-Sea, the closest Essex seaside resort to Colchester, the former capital of Roman Britain. City walls remain from this period, and it has a Norman castle and first-class zoo.

From nearby Harwich ferries depart to the Netherlands and Denmark, while Braintree houses the Freeport Outlet Shopping Village. Further west is Stansted Airport, an important hub for low-cost airlines. Closer to London, modern Harlow has the most Essex spa hotels and is close to the Lee Valley Regional Park and Epping Forest.

Brentwood is a bustling commuter town from where you can see the City of London skyline on a clear day. Close by is Basildon with its Hollywood-esque sign, and forming a triangle with them is Grays, home of the huge Thurrock Lakeside Shopping Centre.

Wherever you are staying, Booking.com has an excellent range of guest houses, country inns and hotels in Essex.
