We stayed at Hotel Thushara, Hawa beach. That is the best place to stay because of the line of restaurants along the beach, the Light House(adds a certain charm at night, must go in daytime). The beach is moderately crowded and one can spend some good time taking a speed boat ride in the sea. The Kovalam beach was not very clean as it is the most crowded of all. The Hawa beach is clean but I think more dustbins and a cleaner environment will help in making this beach more beautiful. Food is good but please be careful where you eat. I had food at Coconut Groove. The food and service was excellent. Hotel Jeevan was pathetic. Not all restaurants serve beer but most of them are pleasant to dine in. Lot of shops for clothes and ornament. Don't shop for the ornaments and bargain whatever you purchase can get it for cheaper price even the vehicle one hires. There is a cultural program held at the end of Hawa beach towards the Light House which can be watched by everyone. Do enjoy the show which reflects the cultural side of Kerala
Spent a week here for a Yoga vacation, kovalam is a friendly place. A bit over the top with street sellers hassling you. Clean Beaches, better to go in the morning for sunbathing than in the afternoon as they became very busy, sea is very rough so not good for swimming. If you want a quieter beach then pop over to where the luxury Leela hotel is and use the beach here, also the sea is calmer so you can swim without a huge wave engulfing you. Recommend a fantastic restaurant called Kerala Cafe, not much to look at but best food ever and very friendly staff, try their mango and cardamon shake with a Kerala Mean Curry and coconut nans, heaven! If you like fresh coconut, there are many stalls selling them. Ask for one which you can drink and also eat.
Kovalam..I loved the people there, so friendly, The sea swept away my sandal and two guys to the rescue. I ate in the main street leading to beach a delightful restaurant overlooking the sea, beautiful coffee not found anywhere else and wonderful smoothies. I would avoid the standing next to the crashing waves!!! Kerala itself is superb to explore mountainous areas and the coastline all wondrous. going again neex 2018 january for more weeks!!!
Kovalam has a lovely beach and out reaching views. The sea is very rough and not safe to swim in. Not much happening in the way of nightlife, this revolves mainly around restaurants and hotels. We stayed for a relaxing week after an intensive tour of North india, 2 weeks would be too long for us unless you were touring Kerala.
Kerala as a region is worthy of a much longer tour (Alleppy, Cochin). Kovalam itself is a bustling tourist orientated spot with a beach front packed with restaurants and hotels. It seems popular with Indian families who are heading to the coast for their holidays or days off. We ate out at several restaurants on the 'strip' and all gave some great examples of local vegetarian and staple Indian dishes. But feel free to try some local 'Family' restaurants in nearby villages or towns. Stick to known Indian staples. Further afield is Trivandrum although the main site, the beautiful ancient temple at the centre, isn't accessible to non hindus. Numerous boat tours into the backwaters and mangrove swamps can be easily booked and again trips can be curated yourself. Everyone in this region is really used to dealing with tourists, albeit perhaps not many tourists from Europe, and eager to help out or provide tours, lifts, meals etc. It's possible to occasionally feel pressured into accepting a drivers random stop at a spice shop, local restaurant or other tourist activities. Everyone is incredibly friendly though so feel free to be thankful but firm if you don't want to do anything. Make good use of the Tuk Tuk's to get you around short distances (up to 20 or 30 minutes). Drivers will wait for you to take you back to your original destination if you ask. Negotiate on the cost and agree up front.
Kovalam should be visited only during the season. Otherwise, most of the restaurants will be closed. Travellers will have to make do with a few places offering mainstream cuisine. I was looking for authentic south Indian food - but was unable to find it. I ended up eating Punjabi food at restaurants. How ironic it is that one cannot get the basic idli, wada & dosa in Kerala.
One can start their kerala trip by coming to trivendrum and stay in any of the hotels in Kovalam which is 15 kms from airport. You can visit anantha padmanabha temple, poovar for canal boat rides and kovalam beach in a day. You will certainly enjoy watching sunrise at kanyakumari if you plan it well and you can cover padmanabhapuram palace enroute. There is hardly any activity you can plan in trivendrum.NOn vegeterians can pay a visit to Hotel Azad for high quality local delicacies.
Kovalam is one of the cleanest and beautiful beaches in India especially the Light House beach. Several specialty seafront restaurants are there offering seafood, indian and continental cuisines, German Bakery,Beatles, Beach Cafe to name a few. One thing I would like to highlight that Trivandrum is little pricey as compared to rest of the Kerala. If in Kovalam one must visit Poovar Island and take a boat ride. The boat takes you through Mangrove forest to the golden sand beach.
I love Kovalam and have returned 3 times. It’s basically a tourist resort for both Indians and international visitors, but offers a really relaxed time with plenty of good food and people watching, as well as Ayurvedic massages on hand. The local people are very friendly and the Keralan food is tasty and great value (especially fish and vegetarian dishes). It’s not a party place - it’s more restaurants than bars, and things wind up by 10pm. So just relax!
Kovalam is a small beach town in Kerala, with very little to do. Stay in a good hotel with sea facing beautiful views and take a stroll on the beach or a dip every now and then. Good for a day or two max. Sea food at restaurants near the beach is a must have, you get to choose from a wide variety of fresh fishes on display and they cook it however you want it! 😋
Alleppey
Lovely chalet all to ourselves, a large and comfortable double bed, room clean as a new pin. Smart new bathroom with the best shower pressure in 3 weeks in India. AC worked fine. WiFi worked well all round the grounds. Staff were all helpful. Gardens were lovely, the waterside setting gave views of boats passing from the restaurant area. The food was really good. A short menu but all dishes done well (and no “tourist spicing”). Breakfast had a limited selection - good if you like Keralan breakfasts, and toast and fruit if you don’t!
Very high standard throughout. In my experience, the best homestay in India (and I've stayed in quite a few). All the fixtures, fittings and furniture are top quality. My room was reasonably big with a balcony overlooking trees and the bathroom is super clean. The property is only four years old so everything looks fresh and new. Lakshmi has good taste in interior design and her Kerala breakfasts-different each of my five mornings-were delicious. Highly recommended. A 10-15 minute walk to the heart of Fort Kochi . I'll be back!
I usually plan a getaway in GHKB during my vacation and it never disappoints me. The best part of this years stay was the Backwater Cruise for sunset. Breathtaking experience through the backwaters and had a fantastic hospitality too. The room was spacious, clean and comfort level was always high. The breakfast was vast with wide menu and totally loved it. Indian menu was awesome. Don't miss the tea ! A stay that was worth. A luxury that is unique and staff being always helpful. Need more properties from Grand Hyatt in Kerala.
Alleppey
This is the pearl of kerala. The best place we have ever stayed. Everything is so immaculate down to the last detail. Everything a traveller needs is given and the breakfast is like home cooked and very nice meal. The property manager Susan is extremely helpful and a gem of a person. She even wished us a blessing of safe journey as we checked out and drove away. Even our driver who stayed here said this is the best place he has stayed while doing travels business throughout India. Thank you Mayflower and thank you Susan Mathews.
The rooms are modern with AC and updated fixtures. Support staff was quick to respond to every request and exceptionally client centered. Food at Mosaic was top notch with incredible masala dosas and omelette s for breakfast in addition to many western and Indian options. The gym was quite extensive for any I’ve seen before in Kerala and the pool is absolutely beautiful, as it was so easy to spend hours there. The views from the hotel were gorgeous. Airport taxi service was excellent and while pricey provided a smooth welcome.

Pretty much perfect... Stayed for 4 nights. The location tucked away down a quiet lane right up against the water and next to a busy little canal with clam gatherers and fishermen chugging past. Fascinating. Loads of birdlife. Lots of nice areas to just plonk yourself down and relax with the marvelous view. The staff were attentive and thoughtful. I asked about the clams and bingo they were on the menu. I'm an Indian food lover but the food here was the best I have ever had. Keralan food at its best. Meticulously clean.
Cochin
We stayed at Jasmin Villa during our recent trip to India. The hosts Stanley and Jasmine were excellent. They made our stay very comfortable, gave us advise on where we can buy things, Stanley arranged for our transport and guided us on how to travel to various destinations. Nice furnished clean room with aircondition. Jasmine cooked us some excellent traditional Kerala breakfast and was always willing to accommodate our requests. A highly recommended homestay and will definitely come back the next time in Kochi.
Thekkady
Property was very well maintained and impeccably clean. Decor was excellent with lot of wooden elements. Swimming Pool and other activity area was always kept clean. Service was very warm and quick. Mr. Ramesh and all other staff were super efficient and genuinely worked to make the stay comfortable. Sometimes, they went out of the way to make our stay comfortable. Breakfast spread was nice and had good mix of continental, Indian and local (Kerala) options to choose. Generally tasty food but not too spicy.
Kumarakom
The hosts, Divya and Dileep, are such gracious generous hospitable relaxed hosts. they are always ready to assist with anything—arranging boat trips, car and tuk-tuk rides, and massages at an Ayurvedic place very close by. They just can’t do enough. They serve great Kerala style breakfasts which you eat communally with the other guests who hail from other parts of India, Europe and US. I didn’t realize till my arrival that they also serve dinner. all the foods are exactly what they prepare for themselves.
This is one of my better hotel stay experiences in Cochin, Kerala State. The staff at Trident Hotel were warm, friendly and welcoming, from check-in till check-out. The property is neat and quiet and has close proximity to the many offices on Wellingdon Island, Port Authority and Indian Navy stations. My special compliments to the Reception desk staff (especially Ms. Mary) as well as the staff at the Travancore Restaurant. (It is worth noting that the meals at the Travancore restaurant were a delight.)
Comfortable rooms. Good crew. Superb continental , Indian & Kerala preparations for Buffet breakfast. Gym was well equipped. The lady at the reception agreed to keep the fresh cream cake which I had bought from Lulu mall refrigerated overnight , since I had to present it the next day to my future daughter in law's family. Though the Manager refused at first , she convinced him and better sense prevailed. I really appreciate her kind gesture. Lulu mall at walking distance is an added attraction.

Jose and his family make this Homestay wonderful. Staying with them has been the highlight of my trip so far. Everyone is on hand to help but I also felt I had space to relax. The Keralan food was delicious and some of the nicest I have had in India so far (and cheap too!). Jose was on hand to help with everything I needed and even invited me to a family celebration. He’s clearly very knowledgeable about the area. I felt very safe and comfortable as a solo traveller. Thank you all so much.
the Hotel is just wonderful. the best hotel experience during our trip in Kerala. the rooms offer everything a tourist is looking for: comfortable bed, clean, balcony with a view of the surrounding and the wildlife around the place, delicious breakfast with homemade ingredients, super comfortable common areas especially the sofas on the roof top. and on top you get the friendliest staff and the owner who just knows, what you want and seek as a tourist. thank you for everything!
Mararikulam
We absolutely loved everything about our stay. The homestay was in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature. The room was very clean and comfortable, we slept so well. We had a delicious home cooked traditional Keralan breakfast and an amazing dinner, some of the best food we have had in India. What made our stay extra special was the beautiful happy family running the home stay. We were made to feel so welcome and had so much fun with them. Thank you for our stay.
Pushpak Service Apartment is by far one of the best places I have stayed in Kerala. We got a family Apartment and suite room. Both was big and clean. Lift is being built. Homemade Breakfast was really good with a view of paddy fields. Friendly staff, lady running the place was so helpful. Nearby Chottanikara Devi Temple. One of the staff assist us with the temples booking during his off time. Really thankful. Will definitely go back!
Varkala
Kerala Cottage was WONDERFUL! The owner, manager, and all of the staff were very kind and helpful. The breakfast is brought directly to your cottage which was a very peaceful way to start each day! The manager quickly answered any questions that I had about Varkala and helped me to arrange transportation and activities. as a solo female tracer in India for the first time, I felt very safe and well taken care of.
Buffet breakfast was excellent with a variety of food options, including Kerala cuisine, north Indian cuisine and continental options. We at dinner one night at Bait, the beach front restaurant where they served freshly caught and local seafood. Staff throughout the property was very friendly and polite. Everyone we interacted with was great and it would be hard to list a few staff members here.
Varkala
It was a beautiful property, the best we'd seen in South Kerala. Such a calm and serene place. The host along with the manager were super helpful and hats off to them for maintaining the property so beautifully. Amazing hospitality and the South Indian breakfast was delicious. My number recommendation for anyone who's looking for a calm place walking distance from the beach near varkala.
Ernakulam, Cochin
Beautiful Hotel, very well presented and excellent facilities onsite. Staff were very helpful and we had a fantastic massage at the wellness centre. The restaurant food was excellent and good value for money, it served the best Dosa’s in Kerala during our time in the area. Location was also very good to the local areas of Marine Drive etc to transfer to the water metro going to Fort Kochi.
Hotel Pankaj is a good hotel. The staff was really kind and helpful. The manager was a really friendly man and gave us a 3 star stay. The location was a good one and was near to guruvayoor temple. I liked the hotel and will suggest this to my friends and family. Our purpose was served and it was a really clean and well maintained hotel in the cultural capital of Kerala.
