Assabu Uzura Onsen Shiki no Yado is set in Assabu, within 49 km of Goryokaku Park and 50 km of Hakodate Goryokaku. Our stay was very restful (fresh air and quiet). A delicious breakfast was cooked by the friendly local staff.

Tōbetsu (Near South Hokkaido)
Boasting sea views, ゲストハウス風の丘 features accommodation with a garden, a terrace and a shared lounge, around 22 km from Goryokaku Park. The perfect get away to write your book, study Japanese, hear great music. Cafe next door has summer concerts, great food, pizza, curry, tea and coffee. Cistercian Monastery around the bend is a great place for a daily walk (withdog). View out the front is amazing and so peaceful…way up over the Japan sea looking to Mount Hakodate and the nightly squid fishing boats. Hosts are more than Hosts - helped with every detail needing clarification. Found me a fly fishing guide and shared wonderful food and drinks with me. Location is remote (not far from the bullet train tracks that hiss by - not bothersome) but close to Hakodate, hiking and nice local onsen. Hakodate is definitely a unique Japanese city, very laid-Back, interesting history and on the verge of becoming a major tourist attraction - so visit soon.

Hotel in Hokuto
Toyoko Inn Hokkaido Shin Hakodate Hokuto eki Minami guchi is set in Hokuto, 17 km from Goryokaku Park and 18 km from Hakodate Goryokaku. We booked this hotel due to a change of plans. We needed to be next to the Shinkansen station since we had a early morning traing. The hotel position is very convenient. We booked two rooms since they were listed as single rooms, but honestly we could easily fit two people. We stayed in a smaller rooms during our travel in Japan, usually listed as double room/couple rooms, but were not next to comparison. Bathroom size was also above average. They provide free breakfast, but if you cannot stay they provide a small take away bag with some bread products. As much as the gesture is appreciated, I would have liked a little more that some simple bread. Perhaps a sandwich would do. Staff very nice and welcoming, they do speak english.

Yakumo (Near South Hokkaido)
Located just 26 km from Nakanosawa, Kominka Guesthouse SENTŌ offers accommodation in Yakumo with access to free bikes, a garden, as well as private check-in and check-out. We were checked-in by very friendly staff and other guests seemed to be very down to earth, friendly and interesting people. The small common space was a lovely combination of typical hostel items (world map with pins, books), a small but effective kitchen niece and typical japanese tatami room cozyness. I was especially amazed that there was a small working space upstairs. If I had know that, I might have stayed a day or two longer just to take out my laptop and get some of the work done that I had taken with me on my trip. Everything seemed quite new and very clean. We did not have enought time to try out the cafe or the home grown vegetables shop run by the same people. But both looked very inviting. There were three bicycles that could be taken to ride around town on a first come first served base. With ear plugs, there was no disturbing noise at night in the 4 bed dorm room. Doable walk from Yakumo station.
