I'm familiar with Arendal as it is a useful centre for me to get to other places I want to go to - good transport links for a person without a car and town transport including those to the islands is good. The architecture and natural surroundings are wonderful. There are plenty of places to eat and I recommend the art association's cafe which served me a delicious fish soup and provided local newspapers. There are interesting museums and galleries although the Aust-Agder Museum was not open on a Monday. I found the locals very willing to chat and for anyone interesting in knitting there are at least 3 excellent yarn shops.
