Very interesting city in Tahiti. Not much to see, you will cover almost everything in the city in few hours, but it is really worth to walk around. I was surprised by wonderful streetfood scene here and what a nice marketplace!
Papeete is quite edgy so my advice is to find a quiet spot or step outside. I visited the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands at Punaauia. The grounds and gardens are lovely. Eating's a mixed bag, especially for a lone Vegan. Fish is good. Sunday closes, though I managed to bag myself delightful Fri-fris (figure-eight coconut-milk fried batter doughnut-type cakes for breakfast) from a stall-holder who only comes to the very early Sunday market. Meet the locals, most are gracious and caring.
Its a busy town and not typical of the rest of Tahiti but a good place to begin your trip and find out where to go and what to do. Tip: if you want to hire a car do it at the airport don't leave it for later and hope!!
Peaceful, authentic piece of Tahiti. Awesome locals, world class surf breaks, at the "end of the road". Worth going out on a local boat.
This is definitely not the part of Tahiti you should stay (unless you are a surfer pro). There is no restaurants, shops, or people around after 4pm. Not even beach to enjoy. You should stay up in the big island around Papeete. Take the car and go to check on teahupoo - the round trip won't take you more than half day
Punaauia works as short stay location near the airport for relaxing on arrival or leaving Tahiti, if you can stay somewhere that you can access a pool or lagoon. It's not a particularly easy place to get to except by car particularly at the weekends when buses are rare. LIkewise many shops, restaurants and the museum seem to close Sundays. We couldn't find pleasant places to go for a walk, the main road is busy, with limited footpaths, and it was often hard to get to the beaches, perhaps we just didn't find the best footpaths.
My husband and I spent 3 days in Papeete before boarding the Windstar cruise yacht Wind Spirit. We enjoyed Papeete, a very friendly place, and never felt threatened, however we didn't venture far from the main road in the evenings, and avoided anything untoward. There are lots of Pearl shops selling Tahitian pearls in all tones of black, all beautiful. The surrounding waters are aqua, and snorkelling with black tipped reef sharks and tropical fish and rays is the norm. The markets sell local produce, and souvenirs, clothing and of course pearls and jewellry. We stayed in an apartment, which although close to the supermarket, was disappointingly not up to our expectations. The 11 night cruise around the Tuamotu and Society Islands was fantastic. The yacht was superb, our cabin/suite was well positioned and very comfortable. All meals had excellent choices, and we were waited on quietly and expertly. Nothing was too much trouble, even to the point of following up a request for sourdough bread at breakfast which the chef made especially for us. We can highly recommend visiting Tahiti and taking this trip, and hope to do another Wind Spirit cruise.
At first we weren’t very impressed with Papeete. Many of the buildings are run down and the roads and footpaths are in need of maintenance. Once you get past that the town has a lot of character and there are some lovely shops and restaurants. It’s great to sit and have a cold drink at Le Retro on the Main Street opposite the marina and watch the world go by. The food there is great too and the town really comes alive when the cruise ships come in. The locals are friendly and the food trucks at Place Vaiete offer a selection of well priced meals in a vibrant outdoor setting. French and Tahitian culture blend beautifully in Papeete. A fun town in which to spend a few days, but the pace is busy so make sure you get to see the rest of the island where you will find things far more relaxed.
You might think that the main town on the iconic island of Tahiti would be magical. You would be wrong - it's a dump, and a very expensive dump at that. Get out of town or, better still, go to the other islands!
An interesting, bustling Tahitian town but more dilapidated than expected. It’s hard to keep buildings clean in the tropics but the town would benefit from a clean up (rubbish and sewerage). ... A « Paradise lost » perhaps??
Papeete
Hime Lodge is a great little hostel pretty much in the centre of Papeete. It is a 5 min walk from the town market and other great shops. It is a ten minute walk away from the coast and the marina front. Vanessa and her family are very welcoming and really helped to show me around Papeete and the wider island. The accomodation is simple, but clean and comfortable. I thought it was excellent value for money and would recommend to others looking for somewhere to stay in Tahiti.
Papeete
This property is very central with everything, market, roulette, shopping, etc, you name it. Don’t judge the outside, wait until you get to your room. very clean, more than comfortable, peaceful. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this awesome apartment. Like me, if you love shopping eating or just simply walking in Papeete, book this place, you won’t be disappointed. This is my second stay, i will be back in Tahiti and stay here, unless it’s booked out. Louvina thank you so much🌺God bless
Papeete
This is a perfect spot for a stay in Papeete! The kitchen allows you to cook your own meals, and there is a great supermarket about two blocks down the street. It is also an easy walk into downtown. There were many thoughtful touches in the apartment that made my stay extra comfortable. The balcony has amazing views of the city and Moorea in the distance! This was an awesome place to stay in to get more of a local or real feel for life in Tahiti.
Faaa
Had such a wonderful end to my stay in French Polynesia at Manaeva Lodge - the hosts were so kind, helping me to hire a car, print off flight passes, offering fruit and juice, and generally helping to make quite a stressful and complicated return so much easier! The accommodation is beautiful, in such a good location and everything you could possibly want. 100% recommend and will definitely stay here again if I return to Tahiti - amazing! :)
Papeete
Tahiti was last stop on our trip. Hotel is located short taxi ride from the airport, close to the main centre and really nice promenade.Has a good bus connection but also you can walk to the centre. There is a shopping centre next to it. The hotel has really nice pool area. No access to the beach. Great offer of different trips. The concierge team was really helpful. The rooms are large and clean. Modern design.
Punaauia
This place is a gem! We booked the rooms with a private pool and had such a relaxing time. It is much cooler, being up in the hills. The room design and style made us feel like we were in the Santorini of the South Pacific! Such a wonderful way to decompress; we will certainly be back next time we visit Tahiti. Possibly the best hotel I have ever stayed at (at a very reasonable price too). Thank you!
It was our first time visiting Tahiti and Papeete and we decided to stay in the capital and explore on foot. The location of the apartment was perfect for us and everything we needed was in walking distance. The apartment was very quiet and the bed very comfortable (hard mattress). The quiet pool was perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring the city. Thank you so much again for everything.
The apartment was clean, and this apartment has all the facilities for cooking, washing machine, and a hair dryer. Bed was very comfortable, and air con units in the lounge and bed room was fantastic. Great location in the centre of Papeete and easy to access. Good host who was very communicative and offered advice on things to see and do in Tahiti.
The apartment was compact but had all the amenities and some basic supplies (coffee, tea, spices, oil, laundry soap). There was a small back garden - great to eat breakfast or watch a sunset! The beach was black sand and was different each day! There was a great cafe Tahiti la plage, just a few steps down the beach- wonderful mahi-mahi and wine!
Papeete
Good Hotel for those staying in Papeete for transfer.Room was small , but clean and comfortable, excellent AC.Beni and staff very cheerful and helpful.Breakfast was basic , but very good to get started for the day.Location was close enough to downtown to walk but away from the noise and crowds.Excellent value for Tahiti...Would stay again!
Papeete
This is an exceptional apartment. My husband and I crashed here after an incredibly late flight into Tahiti. Great proximity to the airport, quiet, and wonderful. Newly renovated with beautiful finishings and a rain style shower. The host is very welcoming and even offered us rides to the airport at additional cost, which we appreciated!!
Papeete
The apartment was centrally located, spacious, and very clean. Everything looked as expected in the pictures. Check-in was easy as Tina was at the apartment waiting for us and even offered to transport us to and from the airport. I'd recommend the apartment as a great base from which to explore Papeete and Tahiti more broadly.
Punaauia
Exceptional! The views are spectacular from Mike and Séverine's home. They were excellent hosts who have a beautiful. Their place exceeded all expectations. If you're looking for something peaceful, away from the usual touristic hostels in Tahiti then this is your place. One of the best places we've stayed in.
Papeete
The appartment was perfect for our short stay in Tahiti. We had everything we needed in a short walking distance. Also, the apartment has really everything you need to feel like at home and it was very clean and quiet. And Laurina, the owner, was very nice and she gave us all the infos we needed to make our stay perfect.
Clean hotel and rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful with our questions upon arrival in Tahiti. Tiki hotel was a nice value for our short 2 night stay when we arrived in French Polynesia before making our way to other islands. The park and beach down the hill were an added bonus.
Papeete
I ve booked about a 100 hotels through Booking.com, i can fairly say that Fare Rae rae ranks in top 10 list. Nicolas and Heirui(such a sweetheart)will do their best to make yourself at home. Definitely my go-to place in Tahiti! Oh and the 2 adorable cats made my stay even more enjoyable.
PERFECT location. 10 min walk from the best snorkeling beach in Tahiti. The owners are so helpful in finding new things to explore both on Tahiti and Moorea. The pension is also SUPER clean! I also love their dog, who I call Monsieur Potato because my French is THAT bad.
Papeete
The best part of this hotel was the black sand beach. It is beautiful and different than anything else we saw in Tahiti. The staff was also super pleasant and accommodating at the front desk. The room was a good size, bed was comfortable.
Location was great, 5-10min walk from Papeete centre. Quiet area and the hotel has a great coffee/cafe 5mins away. Great free wifi access, air con and bathroom facilities was good. We rate it fair value of what you’d pay in Tahiti.
Punaauia
Close proximity to Fa'a'a (Papeete's airport). Easy to scuba dive from their dock (Tahiti Nui Diving has a rigid inflatable boat). Nice infinity pool, and also an ocean manmade lagoon. Good bars.
