I did not know much about Coffee Bay and thought it was a small town but is actually very rural. Make sure you have sufficient petrol as there are no petrol stations nearby.

Staff were super friendly and helpful. Laid back and relaxing atmosphere. Lots of activities organized by the hostel. I did a great walk to the hole in the wall.

The personal was so nice and always willing to help, also the direkt connection to the beach was so fantastic and the surf lessons I tuck was great. The instructor help me with a lot of things as a beginner.

Excellent place to stay. Most friendly staff, great affordable activity offers, and awesome location. Food is also excellent. Unbeatable surf lessons. I can only recommend adjusting travel plans to visit Coffee Bay and stay at Coffee Shack.

Amazing hostel. The staff is very welcoming, friendly and funny. The dorm is spacious, clean and has comfortable beds. Activities are cheap and amazing. The food is tasty and very affordable. This is the perfect type of hostel for solo travellers to meet other travellers of every age and background. You can reach the place by taking a bus like citiliner or intercape to Mthatha, Coffee Shack will pick you up with their shuttle (160 rands for a 1.5 hour drive).

The staff are exceptional here, super friendly. I stayed in a hut which was perfect, really comfortable bed and clean. There’s an evening meal which is great for meeting people but there’s also a kitchen to cook in if you wish. Again super clean and everything you need. They organise plenty of excursions, my only regret only staying for 2 nights!

The mosquitos are bad. .Bring mosquito repellent and good walking shoes. We had to cross a stream to get to our chalet and hike up a small grassy hill. Be sure to pack well. There aren't good shops there.. Bring a tire repair kit and be prepared for bad roads.

This backpackers has a great vibe. You can sign up for dinner every night for R120 a person. Good surfing place. Rustic and rural but totally worthwhile. We had a great stay. Hole in the Wall was absolutely gorgeous.

The daily shuttle didn't run on the day we needed it so we nearly lost money on a bus and hotel booking. Having to cross a river to get from the rooms to the restaurant/ reception is very inconvenient, especially at high tide (knee deep) or at night. It's also a public area so you do have sellers and potential safety concerns. WiFi keeps logging out and you have to log back into it.

Really well run backpackers with bar, tasty and affordable food and daily activities. Employs local staff who are all great and clearly does a lot for the local community.

Loadshedding and power outages

Great that the host fetched us from mthatha.The food was lovely and affordable. The accommodation comfortable. Lots of activities to do. Loved that it is right on the beach. The hikes were amazing. The hike guards are really patient.

There are quite a few locals outside the property that bother you selling beads and weed. When you say no they get more persistent and this can be overwhelming.

Lovely backpackers, the staff were very sweet and helpful. The hostel area was clean and taken care of. Very tasty and affordable food. We stayed on the other side of the river which made it more difficult to get to the main area ( especially at night) because of the tide but just remember a torch and to walk carefully. During and after big thunderstorms there was no electricity or network for quite a while, so make sure to have everything charged.

Road to get there is very bad. I would recommend people to stay at least two nights if they go, because of the bad road.

dorm beds are a bit unstable (moves when you move). it got very hot in the dorms since there is no AC, only a fan and small windows. I was there in february which is a very humid month, maybe it's different when it's less humid. I still enjoyed it very much!

Special place in beautiful coffee bay. It offers a shuttle service to pick up at mthatha . great bar and restaurant, lovely common outdoor chill area, cute rondavel hut dorms. clean showers. free dinner on sundays and organize trips and hikes! work together with locals from the villages around. recommend 100%

The day we arrived the bridge to the village was washed away by the river so we couldn't reach the place. But the staff was really helpful and picked us up. Cool spot, nice surroundings and very friendly vibes. Would definitely go again.
