The best place to be based when going around the Quebrada if you go in January. Lovely restaurants and shops, quiet, not so busy. Comparing with Purmamarca and Humahuaca is the place to be based. We didn't have a car and instead, we booked excursions every day. I'd recommend doing that. Going with a car might be useless for some excursions where you need a 4WD or a local who knows the tricky gravel roads very well.

Best place to base yourself north of Salta.
Best place to base yourself north of Salta. You need a car really to see the tourist sites, would recommend hiring for a midday late afternoon pick-up so you can return later in the day.
Would recommend 1 day driving there, then 2 days based in Tilcara to visit the mountains and salt flats. Then return to Salta on the final day visiting the small towns on the way back.
There are two driving routes there. Take the less windy one there when you first collect your car, as the windy route is more complicated to drive (though nothing to fear).
Tilcara has the best restaurants in the area, in particular go to the cake shop La Casa De Champa for the strudel

The house was very close to the centre, yet thanks to it's location inside the block, it felt very private.
I must say, the photos do not do justice to this accommodation - in real life it is much more nice than on the photos.
We will recommend it warmly to anyone needing some privacy and something extra.

A beautiful town with amazing vibes!
A beautiful town with amazing vibes! We really enjoyed visiting the archeological museum and Pucara de Tilcara. An amazing hike up into Gargante del Diablo. Great markets and night life. Very friendly and safe town.
This is by far the best hostel I have been to in Argentina. It's querky and super nice. Diego, the owner, runs the place in a very friendly way. Together with his team they make everyone feel home :)
dorms are big and beds are comfortable. Facilities are good along with a nice breakfast
Awesome place with una buenissima onda and a great view of Tilcara and the mountains in the background
If you are traveling to Tilcara, this is the place to be :)
Muchas gracias Diego y el team
We loved our stay here. It's a (very) short drive from the centre of Tilcara, nestled in a beautiful spot overlooking the mountains. Our room was huge and I liked that we had our own kettle to make a coffee in the morning - it's a nice touch.
We had mountain views from every window which was such a treat to wake up to. The owner is also very friendly and made an effort to talk to us and make us feel welcome. We felt really comfortable and would definitely stay here again.
This hostel was amazing! I stayed in a private room for one night with a friend, and the bed was so comfortable and clean. Linens were included with the room and the bathroom had soap/conditioner/shampoo as well. The complimentary breakfast included bread, cereal, fruit, coffee, yogurt, and more. Tilcara is a small town and this hostel is located about 1 block from shops/bars/restaurants. Definitely recommend staying here!!
Vicenta is an amazing host! shes gave me a lot of good tips and helped to plan my visits in the area. She is super patient and helpful with everything, I kept my bags there for 2 nights while traveling to Iruya too. The towels are super thick and luxurious. Location is right in the middle of Tilcara, super convenient and safe. Breakfast was yummy. Highly recommended!
Super cute boutique hotel. The room was spotless, the bed was comfortable, the hot water came quickly, the hotel had parking. It’s about 8min walk up the hill from Tilcara’s restaurants and center square. The hotel even has a pool with warm water (though we didn’t use it). Breakfast was excellent.
Very clean and amazing service. I am a celiac (can't eat gluten) and in Argentina this has been tough. I eventually stopped messaging it and just brought my own breakfast. However this lady went out of her way to bring me a gluten free breakfast.
Its quite new and cosy, good location
This was our second stay at Las Marias. The chef is great and the rooms are unique, with nice views westward toward the Andes. We use the hotel as a motorcycling stopover between San Pedro de Atacama and Cafayete, but really love it for its own charm and food, will return again.
Great location, lovely staff (Fede at the reception was really nice), the hotel building had a nice relaxing grassy area in the middle. The apartment itself had all you need, was well equipped. A good continental breakfast (selection of pastries, juice, milk, tea, coffee…)
Beautiful hotel, room was nice and comfortable with a jacuzzi tub. It’s also very well located a couple of blocks off the principal street. So just a short walk to restaurants and shops, but far enough to be quiet at night. The breakfast was excellent!
The hotel has an authentic style and is an excellent base for exploring Tilcara and its surroundings. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are perfectly clean and the breakfast buffet is great.
Small homey feel, comfortable beds, spacious dorm rooms, nice breakfast, lovely outdoor space to relax and enjoy the views over Tilcara, and wonderful staff that felt like family :)
The room was nicely appointed for a hotel in this location . It had a balcony but the most uncomfortable chairs. We were unable to sit out there for more than a few minutes.
