We only stayed for the night as we were heading Milford Sounds, it was my first time in there and I found it a very relaxing town to have some drinks, a nice night walk and then to bed. Getting up early in the morning to see the lake with the first lights of the day is a must

I like that Te Anau is somewhere to stay for visiting Milford Sounds and also for a cruise on Lake Manapouri. It is also the gateway to many other activities. There is a good road in and plenty of good eating places and the supermarket Fresh Choice has an excellent bakery.

Great place to enjoy the Great walks of New Zealand.
Great place to enjoy the Great walks of New Zealand.
We did the Keplar track for 3 days and it was amazing. The scenery is breath taking and we got some outstanding whether. It even snowed on our hike which wasn't really expected for the time of year. The Huts were all clean and tidy and the Hutt Wardens do such a great job of keeping everyone informed and safe. Would recommend this Hike. It was also nice to come back and stay at a comfortable and reasonably priced place. Great Hot showers and comfortable rooms. We will be back.

People often only go to Te Anau just to take the Milford Sound tour. There is so much for to see and do! It really is a place to just relax.
Whether it's late night strolls to the souvenir stores or restaurants or taking walks along the amazing lake views that aren't crowded by other people.
If you ever want to try out cycling, Te Anau is the place to do it. Not much traffic and the price for bike hire is cheaper than Queenstown.
If you're in on a Sunday, go visit The Life Church that. A loving warm and friendly community over there.
When it comes to food, I found food shopping, Chinese food and other restaurant prices were cheaper than Queenstown. Oh, and souvenirs are also cheaper here too.

I just love the relaxed surroundings of Te Anau, it's one of my favorites destinations for a few'nights-getaway..there is lots to do and if you're adventurous you can do even more! Amazing nature, the lake is just stunning, township is not too big but has all you could want/need. Brilliant food places...love The Ranche and the Moose. Redcliff restaurant and bar is a unexpected find, quaint and quirky but great food and staff. Overall, Te Anau is a beautiful destination if you're looking for somewhere not too touristy (at least, it doesn't feel that way)

This is a nice location which has everything.
This is a nice location which has everything. The town centre has everything that you would need. Friendly people in shops and businesses. Great range of different restaurants. Excellent tourist attractions. Very convenient to Milford Sound - 2 hours through stunning countryside. A lot better to travel from Te Anau to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound than to come from Queenstown - 4 hours travel
The best place we found to eat and just chill at was Red Cliff Bar and Restaurant - friendly staff, exceptional food and first rate service.
A couple of must do's are: Wings and Water (float plane) with Ivan and Cruise Te Anau with Peter. Both locals, highly entertaining and knowledgeable.
We loved our stay at the Alpine View Motel! The first room we stayed in had some problems with the heating, but the staff was SO helpful! They fixed it a couple times, including in the middle of the night, and ultimately moved us into a different room (and even gave us wine for the trouble!). The location is great to walk around Te Anau, and the rooms were comfortable and clean. There's even a playground for the little ones! Would highly recommend.
We stayed in the older section and were put in a suite with two bedrooms, a sitting area and kitchenette. Way more space than we needed but it was nice to have! The building manager lives on site and was very attentive. It's very dated but that didn't bother us at all. Very clean and comfortable and just off Lake Te Anau. Easy walk into town for restaurants, groceries etc. as well as a walking trail along the lake.
This place is located just outside of Te Anau. Your room is just off of the main house. The whole area is surrounded by rolling farm land. The room is large with a comfortable bed. The kitchen is part of this same room. But it had everything we needed to make coffee or a meal. The bathroom was also a good size with everything everything we needed. From here we booked a small tour trip to Milton Sound.
SPOTLESS - best maintains hotel I have ever stayed in…and I was at the fairmont right before this.
really good location in te Anau for a day trip to Milford sound, the town is very picturesque
very attentive to details - lots of little extras like scent bags on the beds to great you ect
great service - we were recommended 3 awesome restaurants, gave us great advice on the drive to Milford sound.
The hosts were very nice and they gave us all the instructions about the town and where to find everything we wanted, such as the restaurants and the bike rental. They served a very good breakfast, with options we could choose from. The view from the lodge and from the room was spectacular with Lake Te Anau and the mountains. Beautiful scenery!
I highly recommend this place. Room was bright and cozy with comfortable bed. Room has shared bathroom but you will only share it with one more room. Bathroom was clean and spacious. Hotel has amazing view on Te Anau Lake located across the street. All restaurants and shops are just couple steps from this place.
Absolutely perfection! This was the best experience I’ve had so far here in New Zealand. The room was comfortable, super clean and the service was amazing. I really recommend this place. Thank you to the host Ann, that was super kind and provided us the best experience we could have whilst in Te Anau.
It was in a residential area with a wonderful view of the mountains and lake te anau. The whole town is quiet though so maybe anywhere is this nice. The room was large, glass floor to ceiling windows with view, clean modern bathroom, good shower, heat and fan for hot days provided.
It's a motel at the entrance to Te Anau. Has pretty come into its years. There has not done much of maintenance in a couple of years. Rooms have everything you will need. The bathroom was our Highlight. Rooms where spacious enough to spread out. They have laundry available.
I had a fantastic stay at Luxmore, a few minutes out of Te Anau only. The small cabin was in pristine condition in a quiet area as well (behind someone’s property). I would highly recommend for solo or couples looking for a peaceful place to stay.
The space was clean, tidy, and spacious. Definitely good value for the cost for our brief stay in Te Anau. The location is near the center of the (small) downtown. Book a tour and visit Milford Sounds while your here!
Te Anau is a beautiful resort town on the way to Milford Sound. The hotel has large, comfortable rooms and is next door to the best restaurant in town: Redcliff. They have a laundromat and free parking.
Sensational view over Lake Te Anau and to the mountain range. Impressive lodge build. Room we stayed very spacious and loved the rustic decor. Exceptional dining & food. Great hot tub!
The atmosphere of the holiday park was great. We had a great site and our children loved the playground. Our children were asking to go back before we even left Te Anau today.
Te Anau lodge is well worth a visit even if it wouldn't have been a place to sleep. A very original touch of Tim Burton is in the air in this gem that must be preserved.
Perfect location in Te Anau. Across the street from a lovely park and a few blocks from the main area of town. Great hosts and comfortable living!! Thanks!!!
