The walks in the surrounding area are absolutely magical. Take your time to stay a while and do some of the full day tracks. In town you can wind down at a little cinema or catch a bite at a handful of restaurants.

We only stayed for the night as we were heading Milford Sounds, it was my first time in there and I found it a very relaxing town to have some drinks, a nice night walk and then to bed. Getting up early in the morning to see the lake with the first lights of the day is a must

I like that Te Anau is somewhere to stay for visiting Milford Sounds and also for a cruise on Lake Manapouri. It is also the gateway to many other activities. There is a good road in and plenty of good eating places and the supermarket Fresh Choice has an excellent bakery.

Great place to enjoy the Great walks of New Zealand.
Great place to enjoy the Great walks of New Zealand.
We did the Keplar track for 3 days and it was amazing. The scenery is breath taking and we got some outstanding whether. It even snowed on our hike which wasn't really expected for the time of year. The Huts were all clean and tidy and the Hutt Wardens do such a great job of keeping everyone informed and safe. Would recommend this Hike. It was also nice to come back and stay at a comfortable and reasonably priced place. Great Hot showers and comfortable rooms. We will be back.

People often only go to Te Anau just to take the Milford Sound tour. There is so much for to see and do! It really is a place to just relax.
Whether it's late night strolls to the souvenir stores or restaurants or taking walks along the amazing lake views that aren't crowded by other people.
If you ever want to try out cycling, Te Anau is the place to do it. Not much traffic and the price for bike hire is cheaper than Queenstown.
If you're in on a Sunday, go visit The Life Church that. A loving warm and friendly community over there.
When it comes to food, I found food shopping, Chinese food and other restaurant prices were cheaper than Queenstown. Oh, and souvenirs are also cheaper here too.

I just love the relaxed surroundings of Te Anau, it's one of my favorites destinations for a few'nights-getaway..there is lots to do and if you're adventurous you can do even more! Amazing nature, the lake is just stunning, township is not too big but has all you could want/need. Brilliant food places...love The Ranche and the Moose. Redcliff restaurant and bar is a unexpected find, quaint and quirky but great food and staff. Overall, Te Anau is a beautiful destination if you're looking for somewhere not too touristy (at least, it doesn't feel that way)
The room was very spacious and clean and had a lovely balcony. The motel is within easy walking distance of the centre of Te Anau. The owners were very friendly and informative - before we arrived, they messaged us via booking.com to say that many local restaurants were struggling to meet demand because of staff shortages. They recommended that we reserve a table beforehand which we did. The owners were also very knowledgeable about the area and suggested places to stop, on the way to Milford Sound.
Nothing fancy, but very comfortable and clean. A queen bed in the bedroom, two singles in the living area, all very comfortable and warm (stayed in late March). The little kitchen was outfitted with all the dishes we needed for our cereal breakfasts and takeout dinners. I'm sure we could have cooked If we had wanted to. It has a mini fridge, not a full fridge, which was fine for us. Te Anau was a great location for seeing Milford Sound and the beautiful scenery and hikes in between.
The location and view are just beautiful! From the hilltop, you look out at the mountains of Fiordland. It is located conveniently between Te Anau & Manapouri. We also enjoyed meeting the owner, who gave us the history of his property, and took time to chat for a few minutes while he was doing chores. The main lodge has a large modern kitchen and nice indoor & outdoor seating areas. Our cabin was comfortable & had heaters for chilly evenings.
Got caught out with ZERO available hotels across Queenstown to Te Anau. Recommend all travellers either hire a motorhome or book well in advance for touring NZ in summer. Stayed one night in our car and used a non-powered site just to use the toilets and showers next morning. Rained all night so it was a fairly miserable evening (but still kind of enjoyable and places life in perspective )
checked in after a long drive down to Te Anau, the man in charge was so kind and welcoming, we felt very relaxed immediately. upon entering the cottage, it felt like a home away from home, with plenty of space and comforts to make our stay even nicer. perfect for a weekend getaway, very civilized and well maintained. absolutely recommend staying here.
the location, the spectacular view of lake te anau and the room was so modern, clean very functional being that the bathroom opens from the living/kitchen as well. the balcony is right in front of the lake (we had room #6 & stayed for 2 nights). the laundry and the discount to the movie were a plus along with ample free parking.
Motel is very well located , 2 min drive from Te Anau Center and right by the lake (5 mins walk). The place was super clean , even cleaned every day we stayed there. It’s a great base to explore the area and visit Milford sound on a day trip. A stove top for cooking would have been the cherry on the cake :-)
Excellent breakfast and dinner facilities. Clean and well-organised laundry facilities. In the heart of Te Anau and very close to the information centre, which is the departure spot for many great attractions. The staff were very friendly and accommodating despite the Covid restrictions.
This motel was a great find. Large lounge area, well eqipped kitchen and bathroom and comfortable beds and pillows. John in reception and the other staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Location was great for all amenities in Te Anau. The lake itself was glorious to swim in.
Perfect location. We stayed in the newly renovated wing of the hotel. Rooms were lovely. Special shout out to Ashleigh (housekeeping manager) who was so helpful in providing information about things to do in Te Anau and the South Island in general.
Super clean and comfortable apartment with everything we needed, great location close to the shopping town and there is an awesome small cafe just cross the street. I would recommend this property to anyone stays in Te Anau.
No breakfast provided. Most other small motels we’ve stayed in here in New Zealand provide a small bottle of milk for hot drinks, cereal, etc. Aden Motel had some very small containers of milk, but not a small bottle.
Lovely modern lodge on the Milford Road on the edge of Te Anau. Very spacious and clean. Short walk into Te Anau. The cooking facilities are limited but I would certainly stay again and recommend.
Close to town, spotlessly clean, friendly staff, had all the amenities you could need at the budget price point. Great for a couple of days in Te Anau to explore the surrounding region.
Perfect location in Te Anau. Across the street from a lovely park and a few blocks from the main area of town. Great hosts and comfortable living!! Thanks!!!
