Heraklion is now the main city of Crete, where years ago it was Chania. Over recent years the central area has been upgraded with paved walking to the shops and square. If you look upwards you can still see the signs of previous Venetian times and around old constructions. There is a street market area now selling the usual tourist pieces, which has changed from a market that had fruit, vegetables, fish etc. The side streets still have the small restaurants of old. As you walk down towards the harbour area you should visit Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa as their food is superb traditional Cretan and used by locals. The harbour area is good to walk along and watch the cruise ships and ferries. Ferries leave from Heraklion daily to local islands such as Santorini and provide an excellent service. The modernised bus station just 15 minutes from centre will allow you to move to all areas of Crete on clean efficient buses. Heraklion can get very busy during the weekend or bank holiday times, when locals visit and sit around the square in the cafes and small bars, providing a great atmosphere.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!.
Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas.
Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire.
For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting.
We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre.
Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.

It's a nice town with a lot of shops, cafes, restaurants etc etc. People were nice. It has a spider-like outlay and you could easily get lost. GPS was not working well. I ended up searching half an hour for my hotel.

Liked the fact there were lots of places to visit in the town. It’s a mix of old and new and full of places to eat. Bus service is good and not expensive but taxis are expensive to visit around the island. People are friendly and most are able to speak some English but be aware all signs are in Greek so when trying to find your way walking it can be a bit confusing if you don’t speak the language. But that’s part of the fun of the holiday.

Seeing the Palace of Knossos and then the Archeology Museum was a highlight! So much history and so interesting. This is where the Minotaur lived and the site of the Labyrinth, as well as the pre-Greek ancient Minoans. On top of this, inside the Venetian walls are a maze of fun streets with shops and restaurants, all walkable. Good food and fun. So very much worth going to Heraklion! Plus an easy peasy airport is very close nearby.

Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures.
Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures. At first, we were a little put off by the mix of architecture and the labyrinthine streets and alleys, but after a while, it all became known and comfortable. The museums are very good: the Archeo. obviously, but the Museum of Cretan History is lovely and has a pleasant terrace to enjoy coffee. The standout museum for us was the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology, which is thoughtfully curated and with kind and friendly staff.
Bitirinis for fish; Antipodas for flesh.
⭐️💫 PERFECT 5 Star ! ! ⭐️ 💫
From the style and interior design to the location, views , linens and high quality towels and amenities. It’s an amazing place to stay and one would be so lucky to find this Casa. Everything is stunning and has the comforts better than any five star hotel and we have travelled the world. Host is a class act and helpful for anything you might need from local spots for coffee and Greek delicacies to the best restaurants locally in Heraklion. Don’t miss this location. Well worth it !
I stayed in about 100 hotels on this last trip and El Greko was one of the best. The price was terrific considering they are right bang in the middle of the walking street. How can you ask for a better location? Best in the city. The staff and front desk were very friendly, the breakfast was included and decent. The actual room was excellent when compared to the price I was charged - Crete in the middle of summer. I have a balcony overlooking the walking street. I would sit there and watch people passing by. Perfect.
Comfortable room close to the centre yet tucked away in a quiet side road.
Helpful staff (George at reception deserves a mention) and a modern, clean and quiet room with nice en-suite corner shower and a large balcony.
As we were based in Chania, it was just for 1 night to see the Archaeological Museum (5 minutes walk from the hotel) and the ruins of the Minoan palace at nearby Knossos so breakfast was adequate and quick (self-service). We would happily return.
Sartori Concept Hotel is Crete’s gem!
Located in the city center of Heraklion, walking distance from the archeological museum and next to cafes restaurants and bars.
The cool part is the indoor yard which gives a relaxing vibe, ideal for enjoying a cup of coffee. Decorated with ceramic pots with beautiful flowers.
Peaceful and quiet room with luxurious furniture and artistic twist.
I always appreciate a good wifi connection and a good breakfast option.
The location is very good. Near to restaurants, shops, pharmacy and bus station. The hotel is modern, clean and the bed is very comfortable. Also, you have a security box on the room. The breakfast was generous and you have several options from salty to sweets. Before booking here, I've read other customer reviews, and I don't understand the bad reviews. I highly recommend Olive Green Hotel! the receptionist were very helpful and friendly! 🙂
The location was very good, near the city center (old city) with many restaurants. If you are returning during the night, remember that the supermarkets near the hotel are closing early ( 10pm, if not mistaken). The room is small, but just enough for 2 persons. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the breakfast amazing with many choises- the best breakfast in a hotel, during our trip in Crete this year.
I liked the fact that the hotel is so close to the airport; we prefer to take the afternoon flight from the UK which arrives at 22:45 and we then need to stay somewhere close before going the next day to our house near Rethymno. The man on reception is always friendly and welcoming; the hotel is comfortable and clean and is a great way to start our trips to Crete.
This boutique hotel is new as of May 2022 and no expense was spared. We stayed in 5 different hotels in during our visit to Greece. Everything from a 2 star to a 5 star hotel. This was by far the most comfortable place to stay. Off the beaten path but close to the port and airport. I would recommend to everyone to stay here
The front desk staff were extremely helpful! They helped me figure out transportation around Crete and the woman at the front desk also helped me call a taxi. The front desk also watched my luggage for quite a few hours after I had checked out and made sure everything stayed safe!
Modern hotel with fridge and kettle in the room. Room was spacious. Good variety and options for breakfast. Excellent location for exploring the city on foot. City centre, with restaurants, shops & sights, was a short walk away. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
This hotel is located just outside of Heraklion's historic downtown, allowing for a pleasant walk. The rooms are comfortable, with all the amenities you'd need. The breakfast is nice, and the staff is excellent! Highly recommend this place!
We did not expect to like Heraklion as compared to other large cities on Crete based on other reviews. This hotel added to our enjoyment of this city. Located in a perfect spot that is not busy but still very accessible to the main strip.
Evans Hotel was in a great location, very near to the airport and to the city centre as well. The guy at reception was super friendly and helped me a lot with finding the right bus for my next destination. Thank you a lot!!!
Spacious, clean, brand new room. Very helpful and friendly staff. Everything was perfect, really. the location is also great, few minutes walk to the bus stop. Definitely one of the best hotels we stayed in on Crete.
Beautiful spacious room, perfect location in the centre city, near to everything but not noisy, comfy bed, soundproofing, well equipped room, great staff. A true 4 star hotel.
It is located very near ferry port. Also very central to restaurants and shopping area. the staffs were very friendly and helpful. hotel was clean. Also had good view,
