Rubbish everywhere. The beach is filthy, plastic bags and empty bottles are everywhere, even in the water. The beach and surroundings are disgusting. The water is not crystal clear like advertised. It's clearly a city that is growing its tourism sector by building new hotels and restaurants along the coast. The current location is lovely on the beach, and the hotels and restaurants are great, but the infrastructure is still developing (as one should expect in a developing country) so can be a bit difficult to navigate.

Durres is nice to visit for the day if you’re coming from Tirana as it’s a 30 minute bus ride and only 180 lek. However, this is a case of Instagram vs reality, the photos of the beach do not measure up. Unfortunately the beach is riddled with building debris and plastic waste, making it unsafe to walk on barefoot. I would not return and would not come here for a beach holiday. Sunsets on the beach were nice.

Durres is the largest seaport of the country and the oldest city in Albania with almost 3,000 years of history. Learning the history of this country was valuable in understanding the areas where I have been. Albania has suffered much under the cruel 40-year dictatorshp of Enver Hoxha that lasted until 1985. He was an atheist and ordered all buildings of worship to be destroyed. Thus, I have only seen a handful of churches and mosques. The Grand Mosque is located nearby and is a lovely piece of architecture. The calls to worship that come from the speakers on the minaret (pointing in all directions of the compass) are pleasant to hear even if they start at 6:00 a.m. The calls are heard 5 times a day and is a part of every day life. There are several open air archeological sites within walking distance. Museums were closed unfortunately during my entire 14-day stay. Cafes are everywhere and offer inexpensive tasty traditional food. It is obvious that the city is very affluent with the influx of tourism. The sidewalks in the centre are made of polished stone. English is spoken or understood in limited degrees but enough for me to be understood. When I pay for an item, I put the small change in my hand and they pick out the coins needed and are always careful to let me know what they are doing. Albanian currency is the LEK although they will accept euros at 100 LEK to 1 Euro. Durres has been my home for two weeks and it has been a relaxing and enjoyable time.Ines MundtCanada - 6.0Scored 6.0

Durres is on the one hand an exiting city, but on the other too crowded. The traffic is terrible. High airpolution. Mentality of people different to what we are used to in Europe. Every body is very friendly when asked for help or support, and a lot of them are speaking broken German lanuage, 90% of the young males lover 3er BMW, the older generation is more or less Mercedes-fan. All other cars are not cars, but vehicles. But be careful. Not all are your friends. The females know two ways of talking only: 1. loud / 2. very loud Beside the capital Tirana, and the big towns Durres and Shkodar, where people most live, the country is poor, but with a lovely landscape. It takes more then 3 weeks to discover Albania and its secrets. But its worthwile, once you are retired and still fit and adventoures.

The rooms are tidy and the location of the hotel is perfect: you're in the peaceful part of the beach, away from the city center of Durres. The best part is the view: My room had a balcony and a view of the sea to greet me everyone morning. (I think all the rooms in the hotel have a sea view). Their staff (maybe owners) were waiting for us at midnight and they were more than hospitable. Nice breakfast is included in the price. Location is OK, beach is very near but Albanian Adriatic is not the best sea that I have seen in my life. However, you can jump from your terrace to the beach. You will better manage in Hotel Tirona and Durres whatsoever with Italian than English. All in all, we had a pleasuble time at Hotel Tirona.

The balcony clean and spacy. Parking in the garage is included in the price. The value for money is perfect. On top the breakfast was a large buffet, many flavors to choose from. The staff was professional and friendly, the housekeepers did a good job during the stay-over cleaning. I think this was the best hotel in Albania i stayed during my April trip
