The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.
The Alghero accommodation on Booking.com includes 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.
Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations. Safe, plenty to do and lots of good places to eat. I would recommend hiring a car. We did from 'Casual Van'. It was great to see the surrounding coast. Really stunning scenery. Would recommend Regina Margherita and La Bottega for meals and Jo'pier. We got to and from the airport by taxi which we pre booked.

Lovely, charming, walkable little city that makes you feel like you're on holiday but it doesn't feel like a tourist toytown. We were there in mid October so it may well be much busier in the summer, but it was not at all crowded and was one of loveliest holidays we've had. Good food, everything is walkable, excellent city and a boat trip to the grottos.

Litter appalling.
Litter appalling. Waste bins not emptied and rubbish out on streets for days. Foothpaths appalling and dangerous especially for older people.
Vsited Maria Pia beach most days by bus. AF bus service quick but did not seem to stick to a timetable especially on Sundays.
Great places for eating. Hotel staff inHot la Magherita were fantastic and recommended many places to eat and very helpful with queries we had.

Alghero is a beautiful city to visit with plenty of beach's to choose from. Load of restaurants and bars. Depending on the time of season you pick it can be busy and crowded or it can be peaceful and relaxing in late September early October.

What an alluring old-world city with some of the best restaurants and cafés in the world. Our meal at Mabrouk was unforgettable, as was watching the sunset at Ristorante Angedras while sipping limoncello spritzes and waiting for Mabrouk to open. We will definitely stay longer the next time.
I loved this hotel and wished I could have stayed longer, (I only stayed 2-nights). I had a room with a balcony and beautiful view of the pool. The restuarant had an awesome breakfast, a big buffet. There was also a snack bar near the pool. The hotel has a small store on site for food and other items. The hotel is located across the street from the beach, which was great for swimming and walking. The hotel is also close to many restaurants. The hotel is a short 10-minute taxi ride to the Alghero airport.
1. service was excellent.. equivalent or better then 5-star hotels. special mention to Rose, Silviana and Marcus.
2. the hotel looks better in real life then the photos. there are a lot of areas to chill- poolside looks great, outdoor breakfast area etc. all well maintained including landscaping. the photos on Booking.com makes the hotel looks cold but it is a lovely villa. well located and if I come back to Sardinia I will stay here. parking was easy too. Alghero is one of our favorite towns.
Caterina and Mario were so welcoming from the start we felt like we were at home in Sardinia. The room was so cosy and clean with some beautiful touches. Breakfast was gorgeous on the balcony and Caterina made us whatever beverage we wanted. She gave us great tips on restaurants and places to visit around Alghero and gave us an umbrella to take to the beach with us. They were so kind and honestly felt like family! Couldn’t recommend this bed and breakfast enough.
I loved the location of this hotel. It was on the edge of Alghero. It was a lovely walk to the old town and if you didn’t feel like a walk there was a curtesy bus to bring to and from the town. It was lovely to have had a beach across the road with umbrellas and sun beds for your use. There was a great pool and it was never crowded which was great. The breakfast was superb and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly.
The property was very clean and well equipped. we stayed in a private room for 2 and we had soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels, etc. Also, there are umbrellas for the beach in the common areas that you can take for the beach, very usefull!!
also, the bus from the airport left us/picked us just in front of the hotel were you need to check in/out.
Honestly, everything was great, I will recomend for sure!
All of the staff, at the desk, at breakfast and cleaning were so friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is perfect, basically on the beach and 20 minute walk to Alghero. We rented bikes for a day from the hotel which was great fun. The pool area was really nice and never felt too busy and holy moly the breakfast was AMAZING!
Germano were one of the best host we got. We had many advices about tourism in the city and around. He gave us a tip for eat (for those who's reading this: go to focacceria Melese). We event show us where we should go in Sardinia.
The breakfast was good too! A real coffee makes everything.
Thanks for everything!
I spent 14 nights in Alghero with my family (2kids). Casa Lido is very nice apartment close to the beach and city center. There are 2 supermarkets in the neighborhood. Perfect parking possibility enabled us to have easy departure/arrival with car when we visited other beaches around north-west part of Sardinia.
I spent 10 days with my family on a road trip across Sardinia, and this apartment was the one that surprised me the most. It was spacious, clean, and had excellent communication with the proprietary Beniamino. I will definitely come back and recommend it to friends on future trips.
It is one of the best places we've ever staid in Italy (and we've seen most of Italy). Renzo and his family are doing a great job maintaining one of the cleanest and prettiest places you could chose in Alghero. It's close to every place you want to visit. Totally worth it!
The hotel is ideally located for a visit to Stintino. We walked to restaurants and bars on the water in five minutes.
The desk person could not have been nicer. And this continued with all the staff.
The restaurant in the hotel was lovely and our food was quite good.
We loved our hosts Chloe & Stefano who were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about Alghero & Sardinia.
Our room was decorated tastefully. Everything was to a high standard. More like a boutique hotel. The pool was an added bonus needed for the searing temperatures.
I never slept better during our trip to Sardinia than while staying in B&B Cuscino e Cappuccinos. Being just a 5 min walk from the city center, it’s a true gem! And Dolores was just the most welcoming, taking care of us as if we were family. Amazing experience!
Great location about 10 minutes walk from the absolute center of Alghero, a pretty, fun, and lively town. The host, Emanuele, was very responsive to any questions and fixed a couple minor problems with the property immediately.
It was one of the best hostel in Sardinia, great location, comfortable bed, very clean and very well equipped and maintained. It was one of the most extensive place that I've stayed in Italy.
An apartment is great, very clean, quite, very good location, close to the centre. The host is very nice and helpful. I really recommend this apartment. Sardinia is love :)
