Had wanted to visit Matera for many years and it lived up to our expectations. Beautiful historic city and easy to walk around. We had a couple of good meals , one terrible and fine dining experience a massive let down. This can happen in any city just your luck sometimes you can be unlucky.

Always depends on your expectations, but our feeling was Matera was definitively worth 1 full day or 2, especially if you hike to the point of view on the other side of the little canyon, and/or visit a few historic monuments. We could not visit the famous trogloditic crypts of the original sin since the touristic site to make the compulsory reservations (1 day in advance) is such an absurd mess.

The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia.
The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia. The ancient city is exceptional and definitely worth staying over the night . You easily get lost when walking around (GPS is not very helpful) but it is part of the adventure;) . Be prepared to climb many steps and take your time to enjoy the unique climate of the place.

Matera is a beautiful place with stunning views of the sassi and cave dwellings. There are also some interesting attractions that you can visit to gain a better understanding of how people used to live and what Matera went through before becoming a UNESCO site and the amazing place it is today.
One such attraction is Casa Noha, which is a multimedia demonstration inside a historic stone house. It provides a helpful insight into the history of Matera and the struggles of cave-dwelling life.
Another interesting place to visit is Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera, which is not just a cave-dwelling but also a living museum. You can experience what it was like to live in a cave with a straw bed, tiny kitchen, and livestock all within the confines of the cave.
Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce is a church located on the other side of the Sassi. It offers great views and is definitely worth the drive from Matera.

We had a wonderful time at Matera.
We had a wonderful time at Matera. The people were very friendly even though the season was just about to start and alot of facilities were still closed. We had a great first of the season meal at Enoteca dai Tosi with a tour of the facility. Tasted new wine, delicious meats from the local butcher, local cheeses, and some dishes from the new menu. The town is so beautiful, that you can't take a bad picture. You must prepare for a lot of stairs and walking...have comfortable shoes...
The town was even prettier at night. It was great! We wanted to stay longer and keep exploring....
We liked everything about the hotel as it was basically brand new and very modern and clean and all the amenities you could want. the breakfast was great, there's an outside eating area and there's a small bar next to the lobby area. the staff was excellent, the rooms were spacious, we had a room with an outside balcony, and we were one minute from the ancient Matera city. the beds and pillows were fantastic, the bathroom was spacious and new and there's not really one thing I could say that we did not like about the hotel
perfectly located in the old part of Matera.
Staff was very friendly and responsive as we checked by message for parking solution.
We parked just 300 m away from the hotel in a secured car park where we left our bikes at the car.
The room in a cave was perfect for us to cool down and relax before we went out to explore in the later afternoon.
We arrived in August so it was super hot during the day.
Breakfast also very good, dog friendly, wifi worked well.
We hope to be able to come back.
Beautiful bed and breakfast in a unique setting. The location was perfect for all sightseeing in Matera. The bed was the most comfortable that we have slept in on our travel through Italy. We loved the fresh linens every day and breakfast was delicious and made to order. We particularly loved our little terrace for sipping wine in the evening, watching the lights in the Sassi Caveoso. We had a very happy week here thanks to the wonderful, kind and attentive staff.
Reception was kind and welcoming. Mario the driver was a big help with driving and our luggage. Sara was a fabulous guide. We loved her.
Hotel was beautiful and clean. Would have enjoyed cut up fresh fruit for breakfast. We loved our stay in Matera and Cenobio felt safe and homey. When you travel so far to Italy, it is a wonderful experience to stay at Cenobio because theh welcome you like family. Thank you for taking such good care of us!
Just to keep it short - unique place with the best breakfast we have ever had in Italy. There might be plenty of cave hotels and bnb's available in Matera but no one can compete with Al Convento's various handmade table served delicious breakfast dishes.. The room in the cave was superb, perfectly clean and well equipped. Owners were very helpful providing useful guidance.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this comfortable, pet-friendly hotel a few steps away from the old town and Sassi. The owner was very hospitable, helping with our luggage, directing us to a location where we were able to find free parking close to the hotel, and providing recommendations for what to see and where to eat during our time in the beautiful city of Matera.
The hotel is charming and clean, the room inside a renovated cave, very beautiful. Wonderful staff who tried in every to give a good feeling, the best breakfast we ate in Italy ... but the hotel is definitely not suitable for people with knee problems ... we counted 78 steps to go up and down the hotel. It definitely needs to be written, so people know what awaits them.
Being in the heart of the Sassi was the best part of our stay. The views were incredible all the way around! We appreciated this little hotel despite its shortcomings - nothing compares to having this cave experience and imaging what Matera was like was back in the day, this was truly special. It was so easy walking everywhere from here. We honestly loved it!
The greeting was extremely warmful; prior to that, the staff had arranged the parking and shuttle very efficiently (you cannot park in the Sassi in Matera). In the heart of an amazing town, the hotel is just fabulous (the "caves" have been turned into wonderful sleeping alcoves and rooms), and the staff is always there to help --with a smile! Don't miss it.
Pleasant and helpful reception in a beautifully designed room carved in stone and rock. Also smells clean and fantastic. Nice mattress, slept well, lobby is beautifully lit, making the parts carved in stone look biblical. Most importantly, however, the hotel captures the experience, one of the nicest hotels we stayed in on our Italy trip. Grade 9/10
Sant’Angelo is indeed a luxury retreat in the heart of the Sassi District of Matera. 5 Star views from the restaurant as the terrace faces the Church is St Mary of Idris. Lovely breakfast offered w/ plentiful options and great service. My cave room was tastefully restored and a treat to stay in.
the hotel is just in the middle of the Matera. very nicely decorated room has everything you need. Great breakfas in the morning with a fascinating piano recital from owner. Super staff, recommended also a very good restaurant nearby. Would definetely stay one more time if come back.
Words can't express how much we loved this hotel. It is small and charming and close to everything. We elected to have breakfast, which was actually served at the hotel across the street. Breathtaking views of Matera. Everything was wonderful. Will stay again!!!
This was the best accomodation i stayed at for the 3 months i travelled around Italy , the rooms were 5 star and the location was perfect to visit the old town of Matera. I will definitely be back and confidently recommend this place to all my friends and family.
This resort far exceeded our expectations. The location and view are the best in town. Breakfast was amazing and the staff was one of the best we came across in Italy. Staying is a cave is the only way to go in Matera so look no further.
The Hotel itself is an adventure, the rooms very different to what you are accustom, its literally a cave within the mountains, the town Matera unbelievable. The personnel all were very friendly and serviceable, definitely will be back.
The location was great, the view from the window was probably one of the best in Matera, the host Nunzio was friendly and he provided tips for restaurants and parking and how to get to the hotel. Overall great stay at Cave rooms sassi.
Matera is a very beautiful place, and the hotel is part of that beauty. Centrally located, and all the charm and character that I had hoped for. Spacious room, quiet, warm and cozy - while bright and airy.
it is magic, the hotel in an on itself tells the story of Matera, from breakfast at the grotto all the way to drinks at the roof top , with incredible service and rooms
Amazing and atmospheric hotel with beautifully appointed cave rooms in the stunning historic centre of Matera. Service was excellent and spa facilities were beautiful.
