A few miles from the Belgian border, Lille displays Flemish influence in both architecture and cuisine. Its most famous square - Grand Place - is home to the beautiful Vielle Borse building, the Lille Christmas markets and several restaurants serving moules-frites and local beer.
Behind that is the Palais Rihour, a rather odd-looking building surrounded by cafes. In the opposite direction is another square with the opera house at the centre and triangular-shaped buildings fanning off in 3 directions. One of these cobbled streets leads to the Old Town, where boutiques and international brands are in beautifully crafted shops.
Shopping in Lille is actually epic. It has Europe’s largest bookstore (the 8-floor Furet du Nord) and largest flea market - the Braderie de Lille. Then there is the bustling Wazemmes market and the huge Euralille shopping centre. The town also has some fantastic chocolate shops.
Other attractions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Citadelle – a 17th-century fortress surrounded by a free zoo and gardens.
Lesquin Airport is on the city’s outskirts, but most visitors arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after Lille’s most famous son. If travelling to Lille by Eurostar, check out the mural of famous European landmarks before heading to your Booking.com hotel, B&B or apartment.

Our trip started on a bad foot as most of the city was closed for the celebration of the 8th May but then, it started to blossom in the afternoon and streets started to become crowded with people.
I recommend to spend most of the time in the old town where most shops are located and where many small cafes are located. You can find many award-winning restaurant in that part and they are very close one another. I recommend tasting the pastries of Dona Bica and Les Merveilleux de Fred. I would recommend to skip the breakfast at whatever hotel and going to a local bakery for some fresh bread. Beware the coffee, I had a hard time finding a decent one, they all tasted much bitter than what I'm used to.
The Citadel is a nice place for a stroll and some quietness. We didn't have the time to visit the Museum of Fine Arts.
Pack a good pair of walking shoes because you will be walking a lot in the city center. You can buy a day pass to use every transportation system for 5.5€. There are bicycles available but there was a deposit system that I wasn't very fond of so I skipped that part, otherwise it is 1.8€ for 24h (but 200€ security deposit).

What is good is the fact that the two mainline stations are so close, very easy walking distance apart, approx 15 mins. I really enjoyed walking around, I must of walked 4 - 5 hrs on the day I arrived, after of course having had a shower and few moments rest on my bed. I'd encourage any first timer to France to go, my French is almost none existent, I learnt it, or didn't learn it at a very poor school many years ago, when we had to translate straight from French to Welsh, and my Welsh was not brilliant, we also had a teacher like a bear with a sore head, so I only did one year; still I got by and was understood on a good number of occasions.

Beautiful architecture, compact and easily explored by foot, very flat too. Fantastic food options. I was surprised to find shops closed on Sunday though, fortunately the Palais des Beaux Arts was open and free to enter.

This was our fourth trip to Lille.
This was our fourth trip to Lille. We fell in love so much with this city that we hope to one day call it home. A city filled with adventure, kind people and so many beautiful places to explore. If we could move today, we would! Take time to explore this gem of a city, for it has become one of our favorite places in the entire world to visit.

Everything!!!
Everything!!! The People, Places, Architecture, History - Home of Charles De Gaulle, Culture, Art and Festive Vibes!!! Very well located - we visited Bruges and Paris from Lille. I would highly recommend the Sightseeing Bus Tour and a Walk along the River.
Also visit L'Hermitage Hotel - FANTASTIC!!!
great hotel so near transport and walkable to the centre of Lille .There is a huge shopping centre across the road and it's also across the road from the metro .Euro star is just a 15 minute walk and lots of great restaurants are on the doorstep.
A great budget hotel .Staff are really lovely.
Don't travel here on a Sunday as nothing is open in Lille ,my fault for not checking .
I would recommend doing a tour in a convertible citroen from Get Your Guide ,a great experience showing you all the town of Lille and the history .
Great location, with the flat being 30m away from the Grand Place and in the heart of the cobble-stoned old town, with all its bars, restaurants and shops. It's also something like a 5 to 15mn walk away from the two train stations. The flat will give you a rather dull view of rooftops but has great natural light at the end of the day, at least in the spring. It's spacious, clean and has all the amenities you would expect. It's quiet despite the location and very safe.
Very nice and modern hotel in the city center. It has a great lounge area with complimentary snacks, fruits and drinks (except during breakfast times), a gym room and even a small sauna attached to it. Overslept breakfast times so can't comment on the breakfast. The view of the rooms vary, as it has rooms in every direction. This time I had a beautiful view over Lille from the 4th floor.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Very good English spoken. Parking can be booked in advance or (if available) on the day. In addition to the standard continental breakfast they also served bacon and scrambled egg, which was a nice addition.
The hotel is in comfortable walking distance to the centre of Lille, and has a tram stop immediately outside.
1. The staff was efficient and friendly.
2. I didn't use too much of the facilities, basically used the hotel to sleep. However, everything was in order. I enjoyed the everyday free cookie in the morning. :)
3. Everything was perfectly clean, and the ratio of comfort vs. price was rather good!
4. It's in a nice place, close to buses and tram.
5.
The hotel was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. It is very close to the two main railway stations and also to the city centre of Lille. The breakfasts were basic continental but were still good.
The bathroom was small but very good, clean and adequate for our needs with plenty of hot water and a good shower.
The location is perfect. Took the Eurostar and arrived quite late. No hassles at all with the journey as it’s in front of the Lille Europe station. The hotel is near the city centre so there’s no need to pay for public transport. Everything is reachable by walking. Breakfast is good and love the pastries/bread. Comfy beds.
We loved out stay at Okko. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was nice and clean. We can highly advice this hotel. The location is also perfect and directly in the centre of Lille and still very quiet. You can also park at Ingido parking which is directly next to the hotel. Parking there is 21 euro per 24 hours.
Fantastic location in old town Lille. Huge living area, big comfy bed, great fully equipped kitchen and fantastic shower. Free parking nearby an absolute bonus. Emmanuel was excellent and even though it rained a lot we used Netflix on the big screen TV. Best equipped apartment in 8 weeks in Europe.
Great location directly next to both train stations Lille-Europe (Eurostar) as well as Lille-Flandres. You can walk straight into the old town centre and explore its little streets with beautiful old buildings. Really enjoyed being able to do that (and grab a bite) after a days of hard work.
Secure on site parking, good breakfast, easy access to the Centre of Lille, the Metro is only 5 minutes from the Hotel, the centre of Lille we really liked it, had our evening meal and we are thinking we will be back for weekend beak.
The staff are adorable and nice. The hotel is a contraction quite historical and ancien, so the elevator is beautiful though small. The hotel is not far from the Lille Flandres train station, about 5 to 7 minutes of walking.
Nice hotel in a quiet area, but only 10 minutes of walking to Lille Flandres railway station.
Room was OK, the bed was comfortable, and breakfast was tasty with freshly baked bread and pastries
it’s probably the best Hostel in France! Service is excellent and staff is very professional.
Always a friendly reception and the location is really good. it’s right in the old part of Lille.
The hotel has retained its character and charm from the '50s and '60s. Quaint and comfortable. Its central location in the old town is ideal for walking to interesting sites.
Great breakfast and boulangerie attached to the hotel. Excellent customer service and very comfortable and stylish hotel right in the centre of historic Lille (old town).
