We live in Cairns, which is only a 5.5-hour drive away from Townsville. We use the town for quick get aways and shopping not available in Cairns.
Plenty of good places to eat with lots of variety from drive through to quality restaurants.
Getting around is pretty easy if you have Google maps or similar. It's very spread out and there seems to be multiple ways to get to some destinations.

Loved the area with friendly people everywhere.
Loved the area with friendly people everywhere. Went to the Museum which my Great nephew really loved. All hands on. Went to Kirwan Bowling and had a great time with all our extended family.
Also went to the Tavern and had a wonderful meal which didn't cost too much.
Spent time on The Strand at the Waterpark and all the kids had a ball splashing around.

It is a nice city surrounded by some rainforest, farmland and bush. Lots to see and do. I loved the museums. I loved the botanical gardens; the hill overlooking Townsville is five minutes drive away from the hotel and you can drive or walk up it. The esplanade is worth the walk. Lots of places eat and drink along it.

Townsville is a relaxed, growing city with good restaurants in Palmer Street and along the Strand. Easy to get around and always peaceful on the water front. Magnetic Island is a quick ferry ride away.

I was a little concerned after reading other reviews but .......Views and location were awesome. Right on the Strand with seaviews. . Bed was comfy, and the air con was amazing!!!!! Was a bit strange when we asked about pricing and were told we would get cheaper if we went on to Booking.com or something similar, which we did and saved $35 on a room. A bit of a muck around but at least they were honest about it.
Overall nice place would definitely stay again.
Self contained apartment. It was large, comfortable lounge, undercover parking, everything you needed inside. It is 3 blocks from the Strand, but we an easy walk, or grab a scooter of you feel lazy. Clean pool area. Because of the location, we had a self contained 1 bedroom apartment for the same price as a one room motel room on The Strand. When booking we had trouble deciding but glad we chose the larger living space.
The room was comfortable, pool was nice, location was practical - walking distance to restaurants, bars etc - but not as enjoyable as the Strand. Be careful as there are two Oaks hotels on the same street! It is hard to know which is which when you are booking. We originally booked the wrong one which is a lot further away from the hub. We only found out when we happened to be driving past and saw there were two!
Everything! Couldn't fault it. After a long and tiring day on the road, the wonderful lady at reception was not only very welcoming and friendly, she gave us a free upgrade to a larger room. The room was newly renovated, clean and perfect for our needs. With continental breakfast included also, it was incredible value for money. We will most definitely stay here again when we are back in Townsville.
The Hotel was very central to our needs and not far from the Magnetic Island ferry. It was a pity I guess by economics that there was no eating facility on the premises. The location allowed myself to review my early work days in Flinders Street finding many of the old buildings still maintained including a Bank where I first worked in 1964 just across the road.
We stay here often. The rooms are really clean, comfortable and tasteful in design and functionality.
The staff, Jeanette and Peter are very pleasant and extremely helpful.
The location of the hotel on Palmer Street is perfectly, centrally located to restaurants, hotels and shops on Palmer Street and Flinders Street. The stadium is also an easy walk away.
Keira, the part time manager, was really nice and the best part of my stay. she helped me with all my inquiries, and booked me a taxi, which is hard to come by in Townsville, to the train station. Upper lounge area was really spacious and nice. Kitchen tidied up twice a day.
Hotel is on the Strand. Very close to the beach, walking path and right in the middle of all the Strands attractions. Very basic kitchen facilities. Hotel let me check out early and refunded the nights that I didn't stay but had paid for.
We chose Madison's for it's location as we had stayed in Townsville before. Good location right on The Strand. It has so many eateries close by. We ended up going to four of them during our stay and none of them disappointed.
Very close to all the Restuarant on the strand a good spot very central and walking distant yo pubs snd cafe .
Very clean and is comfortable bed and room has kitchenette if you want to do your meals
Quiet, comfortable rooms. Friendly staff. Everything you want after a long drive. I have stayed here in the past and always found it a good choice when passing through Townsville.
It’s very spacious and the location is amazing. Right on the Strand. The place is very clean and tidy. It has everything we needed like kitchen and cookware.
