A small pocket of land that includes Valkenburg in the southern Limburg province of the Netherlands contradicts the flat landscape we usually associate with The Lowlands of Holland. This former fortified city includes historic Valkenburg Castle ruins and the hilly terrain is terrific for mountain biking and nature walks.
The neo-Gothic train station is the oldest existing of any in the Netherlands and links Maastricht with the German city of Aachen. The city’s appeal is magnified during the annual Valkenburg Christmas Market held in the manmade Velvet Cave, a disused marlstone mine used for making local buildings.
Nearby is the 3-country point where The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany come together, and on the Dutch side there is a plaque marking the location of the highest point in Holland. Many other castles such as Schaloen and Geulzicht make interesting day trips into the Geul Valley countryside.
Let Booking.com help you make the perfect hotel choice in the 'Dutch Alps'. Spa and relaxation hotels are plentiful in and around Valkenburg or there are various family choices or romantic escapes amongst nature.

For such a small town there are so many things to see.

Sightseeing (castles and historical industries such as mining)
Walking - many way-marked routes leading from town.
Food - Surprisingly long pedestrianised street where restaurants and bars are centred along.
Sport - Cycling One Day Classics and Grand Tours all use this town as a focal point.
Location - Near to so many other places, this town is a great base for further exploring.

We went to Valkenburg for the Cave Christmas Markets.
We went to Valkenburg for the Cave Christmas Markets. We went to see the one managed by the municipality(Kerkst Markt) and it was worth the trip. The caves were beautifully lit, with plenty of variety of stalls. The staff managing the crowd was polite, helpful and very aware about everything. Also, they had charitable event running in a very quaint way.
Besides the Christmas market we explored the market area in the city which was again beautifully decorated. The main market is surrounded by mountains and canals so its pleasant to just walk around in the town.
Overall the city has a small town vibe which can be refreshing if you are looking for a getaway from the city life.

The Christmas markets were a disappointment, only a few stalls and mostly selling tourist tat you can get anywhere. The market stall food choices were minimal. However the decorations around the town were nice and the restaurants were plentiful and welcoming.
We had planned to stay for 2 days but we were done within an afternoon.

Well worth to visit around Christmas time!
Well worth to visit around Christmas time! With different attractions and points of interest scattered all around the city, Valkenburg have a lot to offer for short Christmas break. You will find yourself a perfect place to spend your time with your loved one or your family and feel the spirit of Christmas. There is very large and vibrant choice of cusine served in local pubs from Italian pasta to mexican tacos, german grill and spanish tapas. All of the pubs and restaurants are just a few steps apart from each other. People are very friendly and Christmas markets are full of goodies to buy as sweet memories of Valkenburg.
City is small, so I would recommend going there for a day or two but if you planning a bit longer holiday then probably best bet would be to stay somewhere near like Maastricht and take 20 minutes drive to Valkenburg for a day. Keep in mind car parks are very busy and you may end up parking your car way away from city centre!
Nothing. When I arrived the hotel looked old and dirty. I drove upon the parkingplace and than I decided I would not even go inside. The entire hotel and the environment looked awefull. When I called the reception to cancel my reservation they only answered the phone by saying ''hello'' and no further indication of the name. When I didn't respond right away they hang up the phone. The second time I called it was the same. The pictures on the site look nice but the reality is something completely different.
Highlights of the Hotel Experience:
-Exceptional Staff: The hotel staff were notably friendly and accommodating, contributing to a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere.
-Prime Location: The hotel's location is ideal, offering easy access to local attractions, dining, and shopping areas, enhancing the overall convenience of the stay.
-Flexible Checkout Policy: The option for a late checkout is a significant advantage, allowing for a more relaxed and unhurried departure experience.
The hotel is very close to the station, and about 15 mins walk from the tourist centre of Valkenburg. The room and bathroom are modern looking and very clean. Also very well equipped: box of tissues, body lotion, shower cap, etc, not just the basics in the bathroom. Good quality towels. There was a small coffee machine, kettle and fridge. You can open the windows. Had a comfortable stay and would stay again.
Very friendly staff, seems like a small family business run by father and kids. The location was great as the hotel is located in the middle of the centre. The hotel has it's own parking garage. The breakfast was good, with the staff taking orders at the table. The coffee and yogurt were self service. We asked for the rooms to be close to each other, and they complied with our request.
We were met by the hostess, who gave us a brief tour of the apartment. The place itself is very clean, comfy and well appointed. Valkenburg is a lovely little town with many restaurants and the famous Christmas market in the caves. We had private parking behind the apartment too. All in all the apartment is first class.
The location is very central. We were around 5 to 10 minutes from the center of Valkenburg by walking and 15 minutes to Maastricht. The host was very friendly and sent us really good recommendation where to eat in Valkenburg and where to park and walk around in Maastricht. We would definitely stay here again.
Upon arrival I received a very warm greeting. The room and bathroom were clean & comfy. Staff was very flexible and accommodating. Location was perfect for me! Walking distance to the supermarket, train station and the shopping center of Valkenburg! The area is also very safe when taking a walk at night :)
