The best area to stay in Kagoshima, Japan is Tenmonkan. It's the city's bustling downtown district, offering easy access to shopping, dining, and public transport, including the City View Tram and Kagoshima-Chuo Station.
The stores and restaurants in the train station were good.
The stores and restaurants in the train station were good. There is the famous Kiriko cut glass factory and gift shop, Senganen Gardens and an excellent restaurant with a view of the volcano, Yamakataya department store, and the people in Kagoshima are very helpful and friendly. Every time I go to Japan I go to Kagoshima now. It also has hot springs. It is easy to catch the bus and tram cars that come often to get around.

We liked the nearby shops, the closeness to ferry and trainstation with Shinkansen accessibility. We found a lot of different style restaurants nearby.
In our experience was 1 Queen-bed too small for 2 european people.
The free space allowed us to only open 1 suitcase at a time.

Fascinating, lively city, interesting surroundings, very approachable people. Good food, too. Public transport is well-organised and affordable, and easy to navigate. Sakurajima's brooding, smoke-spewing presence provides the city with a unique atmosphere. I recommend the Kagoshima Brands store for souvenirs and omiyage (9-1 Meizanchō, Kagoshima). And don't miss Sengenan on any account!

Kagoshima is a city with a large volcano in its back yard.
Kagoshima is a city with a large volcano in its back yard. It make for a different kind of vibe. It is also a port city with many ferries, mostly going south to the little island atchepelago that ends in Okinawa. Warmer weather than most of Japan but still pretty chill in January. Nice people, I found them friendly. I like the place.

Sakurajima ,Senganen, Siroyama, Tenmonkan, and so on. Famous sight seeing spots, I recommend you. And local foods, such as satsumaage, black pig, karukanmanjyu, kibinago, you had better try them.

The rural areas of southern Kagoshima are very different from the rest of Japan, with not so huge mountains and very spacious land. It gives a very nice and different vibe seeing all those flat farmlands spread along the see, with a backdrop of volcanoes and hot springs. There are also some good hiking spots. Especially, Yakushima is a paradise for hikers with its deep, pristine and quite untouched forests and streams.
The location was more than ideal! It's connected directly to Kagoshima-chuo station and the bus terminal to the airport. Travelling to other places from there is very easy. The room itself is very comfortable with a rather fancy bath and lots of amenities. I could see Sakurajima from my room window and the lobby and it was beautiful! The staff will also store your luggage before and after your stay for free. There's also a ladies only room with vending machines and laundry facilities. You can collect a key from the staff to access it.
Perfect location to explore Temmonkandori 15-20 minutes walk from the Kangoshima chuo station. Right across the tramp and bus stops. Near shops, restaurants, malls, bars, and so on. The class-Modern interior is amazing especially the lobby. Complementary drinks, toiletries and salt baths are beyond awesome. The smoking area was clean and you sat comfortably. Traveler friendly hotel you can leave your laugage for free. Kudos to the Lady receptionist who helped me with the bus schedule and convenient way to our destination.
The location was amazing as it was a short walk from Kagoshima Station. The walk to the stay is completely covered as well through covered mall. The surrounding area has a large selection of restaraunts while still being quiet enough for a peaceful stay.
For foreigners, if you've ever wanted to try living in a Japanese Apartment, this is a great way to add some variety into your accommodation line up during your stay in Japan.
Super easy to checkin with the iPad, but you need to register your information online first which is convenient considering no need to queue up and wait for staff. The location is 30 seconds away from bus to airport! It is good since it is the only public transportation to get to airport. Aeon Supermarket is close by. And the room comes with washing machine and drying room! Totally recommended
Check in was fun! Loved the interaction with the anime receptionist all done digitally. We did have an issue (our fault typing a name in wrong) with checking in but someone was quick to help us sort it out. The room was a typical size that you would expect but very clean. The bus from the airport stop was only a 4 minute walk from the hotel. Loved all the amenities on offer.
It’s my favorite hotel in Japan. It’s comfortable, has all amenities and is very modern and stylish. My favorites are the rain shower, comfortable bed and massage chair.
The staff are extremely helpful and accommodating. The location is perfect. It’s located close to the shopping streets and the bus station in Tenmonkan.
Excellent location, essentially right outside Kagoshimachuo Station, with easy transport links to the rest of the city and very close to lots of food options. Room was compact as is expected in Japan, but very comfortable and well-equipped. Staff were extremely polite and helpful. I had a great stay here!
Location adjoining JR Kagoshimachuo rail station so it was perfect.
The hotel looked to be almost brand new at December 2023.
The room we selected was the larger option and there was plenty of space everywhere. It was equipped with a toilet in a separate room.
Staff were polite and helpful.
Big room with a TV, really nice shower and bathroom space. It’s right in the main centre of Kagoshima and near the tram lines so it’s very convenient. The ferry port is also a short walk away. The price is reasonable but more expensive than other Grand Base hotels I’ve used.
A convenient hotel located in central Kagoshima City. It is very close to tram stations that will take you to the tourist spots such as Mt Shiroyama, Shiroyama Observation Park, Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. Also its walking distance to famous black pork tonkatsu places.
Great location for food choices and scenic walks around town. Kagoshima has a long history which can be enjoyed by walking around and learning about the statues.
Hotel room was decent size w a nice view. Bathroom and tub were a comfortable size.
location and staff are both excellent, the extra mile that staff are willing to do to help me with my luggage makes me give this hotel a 5 star. it is right at the center of Kagoshima Chuo, so easy to access from JR and shopping is so convenient
Very convenient location a couple of minutes walk from Kagoshima-chuo Station, a couple of tram stops and the bus station for airport buses. Plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby, too.
The staff were extremely kind and helpful
Nice hotel just minutes away from the main Kagoshima street and near the port. The hotel is clean with friendly staff. The room we stayed was fine and we got same room first night and upon return from Yakushima.
Great location! Easy access to bus terminal for airport shuttle and the main station for Kagoshima city. Well-equipped room with 2 double beds for maximum comfort. It’s pretty much like a home!
the facilities are so poor, room is so small even in Japan's hotels, the room is not being well cleared. Anyway, the price is not deserved for the experience, except for the homeless.
