The monks were trying to make the stay as good as possible. It was clean, the instructions were clear, extra activities were very interesting and overall the stay was great.

The highlight of our trip to Japan. A genuine experience of Shingon Buddhism with friendly and helpful monks to guide us; exquisite traditional plant-based cuisine; magical gardens and powerful ceremony. Luxurious pilgrimage experience. Arigato!

Dinner & breakfast was a lovely vegetarian spread but the portion sizes are on the small side.
Sojiin, located in the center of Mt. Koya, is a Japanese-style accommodation in a Buddhist temple located to the west of Sohonzan Kongobu-ji and in front of Danjo Garan.

Lovely people and a great location. I'm not a veggie but I really enjoyed the food.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.

It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals...
It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals at our temple were delicious and had many courses. The town has so many temples and good hiking opportunities, we could have stayed longer - but my husband was too much of a foreigner to stay in the temple for two nights. The wonderful Okunoin Cemetery and shrine with an ancient forest was a special treat - we spent an entire morning there, and it was a nice surprise that the buddhist monks take their stewardship of the natural environment so seriously that there is even a forestry department of the temple. Other temples were equally awe-inspiring.
Tourists beware: this is not an hotel.
This is a temple, and as a temple it must be respected in all its aspects.
The structure is not “rich” but is comfortable and in a very beautiful setting. The garden is pure magic and the monks are friendly and willing to share their knowledge.
The position is perfect for visiting Koyasan and its treasures.
Please, respect this place.
Absolutely fabulous temple stay, at a very reasonable price! Lovely traditional room with sliding doors and a view over the garden, a beautiful shojin ryori dinner/breakfast and a warm onsen for relaxing in the evening. The temple is ideally situated for exploring the area by foot, including Okunoin Cemetery and many of Koyasan's shrines and temples.
This was a beautiful experience. The temple is gorgeous. The rooms were very clean. Everything I needed was there. Joining in the meditation and listening to the morning chanting was restful. It was in a great spot, close to the road but calm and peaceful inside. It was a short walk to Koyasan village and many of the attractions.
A cozy traditional Japenese guest-house, right near the Daimon gate. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the facilities were super comfortable. The relatively low price (in comparison to the temple-stays) allowed me to enjoy Koyasan without having to pay a huge amount on accomodation.
Koyasan is an experience that you should not miss. This temple is in a good location, close to a bus stop, but you can also walk to the cemetery. The morning ceremonies were an awesome experience, and the food was great! Room was as expected, very traditional and very very cold at night.
Beautiful Buddhist temple. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and very filling, as someone who eats a lot and struggled to find larger portions in Japan. I’m not vegan but really enjoyed the high quality and excellent variety of Japanese dishes. Public bath was nice and hot.
An amazing experience. It was extremely tranquil and having the chance to stay in such a historic temple was incredibly peaceful. It was a cold day in Koyasan, but each room is outfitted with a small heater. Being able to experience the morning prayers was such an honor.
Amazing experience at Koyasan, we enjoyed every minute, the meditation, the ceremony, and the bonfire. This temple is great and ideally located, we loved our room, the staff speaks English very well and I recommend booking the night experience as it was a great one.
Such a beautiful temple! The monks were all so lovely and inviting, the morning prayer was a privilege to listen to and there was plenty of food to fill you up for dinner & breakfast.
The location is also amazing, Koyasan is absolutely worth the journey!
Sleeping a night in a buddhist temple is an incredjble experience. Koyasan is a very special place in Japan, making it worth to stay overnight here. The rooms were spatious and the bathroom was clean and confortable. Staff were helpful and nice.
The monks who took care of me were fabulous. Also, authentic Shojin food was delicious. I had nothing to complain about. The location was close to everywhere, and it was located in front of the bus stop, the bus from Koyasan cable station.
It’s just in front of The Red Gate, one of the main attractions of Koyasan. The hosts were very accommodating especially because my flight was a bit delayed but they allowed me to check in after the 5PM cutoff. The onsen was fabulous!
Temple lodgings were gorgeous, especially the prayer hall, painted sliding doors and zen gardens. Guests have option to participate in meditation before dinner and chanting before breakfast. Communal bath was very nice.
Thoroughly enjoyed our night at Jokiin. The vegetarian dinner was visually stunning and extremely tasty. Morning Buddhist service is very dignified and atmospheric. Koyasan is definitely worth visiting.
I’ve stayed here before, I brought my wife and we enjoyed the proximity to the cemetery and the food and temple services. it’s a nice experience and different than elsewhere in Japan.
Charm of an old Japanese-style house, but with newly made rooms
Super friendly and helpful owners
Very clean
Izakaya attached to have dinner and a drink after exploring Kōyasan
Staying at this monastery was a unique experience and a must-do for any overnight visitors to Koyasan. The room was basic but very comfortable and the dinner was superb.
