Loved the decor and quality furnishings, staff very friendly and attentive. The location was perfect right on the main square amongst plenty of shops and bars. Rounded off with a good quality breakfast

Getting here was already promising, then arriving and parking confirmed that we made the right choice for a hotel near Keswick. The hotel is situated in an idyllic area, surrounded by green hills and very quiet as it is just a bit off the main road. We had a lovely greeting before being shown to our room and were even given tips for late-evening walks. Breakfast and dinner were both exquisite, far exceeding our expectations.
All in all, we could not have wished for a quieter, better equipped, or prettier hotel for our 3-day Lake District trip.
Highfield features great lake and mountain views and its own private car park. The beautiful rooms have en suite bathrooms and tea/coffee making facilities.

I love this hotel! There is something very unpretentious and uncomplicated about it. Excellent service from the staff, and my son and I loved the view of Lake Buttermere from the bedroom window. It sounds like a small thing but I also appreciated the fact you can open the window quite wide and let in lots of fresh air, as that is not always possible in many (quite stuffy) hotel rooms now. The breakfast was also superb.
Set in 2 acres of tranquil wooded gardens. The charming rooms have TVs and tea and coffee facilities, and many have breathtaking views of the valley and fells.

Wonderful views, quiet rooms, excellent food and a very friendly welcome
Absolutely stunning landscape. There are lots of beautiful walks from the hotel and a great tea room - the Flock Inn with wonderful views from the back seatin area. It is short walk to Stonethwaite which has a great pub and mining museum in the church. The best thing is the serenity and lack of other tourists.

very well located if you want to stay somewhere quiet but also be in short driving distance from lots of popular hikes and Keswick town.
Some of the best views around here.
I would say don't stay here if you don't have a car, stay in Keswick.
not sure how frequent busses are but would be a pain as the shops are 15mins away driving if you forgot the milk!
again if you like boozing then stay in Keswick itself as plenty pubs / bars etc.
Food is great in Keswick loads of options, good hotel restaurants etc from Rosthwaite to Keswick along main road too. also plenty of places to stop, park, hike, picnic etc as you drive straight by the lake.
Very dog friendly everywhere we went. Cat Bells and High Spy are some of the friendlier climbs / hikes with amazing views and also good for your pooch!

Beautiful walks and stunning views of the fells.
Beautiful walks and stunning views of the fells. There is no need to use the car as there are many walks around, two pubs nearby, and a cafe. There is a regular bus from Keswick that comes through Rosthwaite to Buttermere and back.
The location is excellent for walkers, but it is quite remote, so maybe not ideal for families with small children looking for kid-friendly activities.

I love this part of the world, I never get tired of driving or hiking the valley and the surrounds no matter what the weather. It is a staggeringly beautiful place and it is sometimes hard to believe this is in England.

The location is incredible, perfect for heading out into the surrounding hills and valleys etc. The Derwent water circular walk is a must. The walks are challenging ! (not all) and walking boots etc are a must! There are no shops in the village just one small tearoom and two pubs/hotels, Keswick is a six mile scenic drive.

Lovely location with nice walks nearby.
Lovely location with nice walks nearby. Just don't expect great tv reception or wi-fi signal at the hotel, but the views, scenery, location, welcome from the staff at the hotel all combined more than made up for this. We loved our stay and would love to return again at some time for another visit.
The property was brilliant, perfect location for nice walks around the Lake District not too far from anything. The hotel was so clean and was beautiful inside. Ann and Lynn made my stay brilliant as they was so kind and helpful throughout the whole stay. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay near Keswick and the surrounding area. The breakfast which was included was brilliant, a wide variety of food which was all amazing.
We booked a bunk room with four beds. It was perfectly OK for a party of blokes climbing some hills. The hotel has had a lot of money spent on it and it was elegantly decorated (even the bunk room) and spotlessly clean. The food was better than standard pub grub, and good value for money. It is of course in a beautiful area. The staff were charming and friendly. Altogether a very well run establishment.
The food was the absolute best on the entire trip. The building is old with a lot of history but newly renovated with comfortable, modern fixtures and furnishings. The bed was very comfortable with high end linens. Hotel caters nicely to walkers with a special drying room for boots and outer gear and plenty of hooks in the room for all of your gear. The staff were all friendly and helpful.
Everything about this little hotel is delightful. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the food (both breakfast and dinner) was delicious. A special thank you to Ann for going over and above to help us when our son wasn't well. We really felt part of the Royal Oak Hotel family while we were staying there. A truly wonderful week.
The staff Iona was so friendly and welcoming
The breakfast menu was extensive and good quality products
The evening meal in the restaurant was beautifully prepared and a fantastic choice
The Riverside bar friendly some nice whiskey
The ambiance was typical traditional Lakeland luxury at an affordable price
Location perfect for Borrowdale walking
I loved that I had a bath in my room! When on the Coast to Coast trail, that is the dream!!
The hotel felt like it was of a good standard, a proper hotel. The staff were super friendly and professional especially the receptionist.
The TV connected to BBC iPlayer and I was able to connect for some relaxation catch-up TV viewing.
Cracking cosy countryside hotel, perfect for walks or a good book and a pint. Recently renovated the room was lovely as were the public rooms. The breakfast was excellent, wonderfully dog friendly and a decent drying room. Coffee machine available throughout the day and an excellent set menu supper option.
Ann and her staff are brilliant, ready to help with all your needs
Superb breakfast, top quality ingredients cooked to perfection
Great choice of food for the evening meals
The hotel is In surroundings showing off Lakelands glory and beauty
A great pint of local ale after a good walk in the area
Fabulous stay, food and staff very friendly. We loved the heated boot room so our boots and coats were dry for the day after. Perfect starting point for a hike, we did Eagle Crag, Sergeants Crag and Ullscarf one day and Grange Fell and Castle Crag the day after from the hotel.
Beautiful location with seated area outside for drinking etc and off road parking to the side.
Really friendly staff, very professional too. Lovely dining room and lounge area with residents bar.
My room was small but met all my needs and the whole hotel was very clean.
Everything was perfect for our needs, just been up scarfell pike and the hotel was 5 minutes away from our set off point. Lovely bar and a nice dinner for our recovery after our walk. Hot shower and a comfortable bed! Great place to stay. Would definitely stay again.
Hotel has had a recent refurbishment and is stunning throughout. Food was excellent for both evening meals and breakfast. Super friendly staff and posh boot room with individual air dryers for your walking boots. A walkers paradise!
