I was slightly late and the kitchen was unfortunately closed. The food did look very tasty. The staff were lovely and welcoming. Never mind I thought: I’ll will go to the restaurant next time. (I had no problem finding something to eat on the high street.) The room was charming. I liked that there was a desk. The hotel was quiet. I worked for awhile on my laptop with my headphones on and was feeling sleepy. Then I heard a door. I think it was the staff leaving. Then just before the final door closing noise it started… Plinky plonky music which seemed to be emerging from my pillow. Evil demented harps doling out relentless sleep depriving torture. At first I thought it might be another guest and so I managed to drag myself up to investigate. Outside my room it was actually much quieter. I could not work out where it was coming from. I tried to watch tv and forget about it and eventually came up with the idea of playing a recording of a fan through my headphones. Luckily I had one! And so I did manage to drift off. But woke when I rolled over with my oversized full ear covering head phones on. While I managed to get back to sleep I could still hear it in my dreams. Eventually a particularly aggressive arpeggio startled me and that was that. I gave up. It was just after 5.30 am. I found the source when I was leaving a couple of hours later. A ceiling speaker in the hallway below my bedroom piping zen music to the communal areas downstairs. All night long! Why?!

Winchester is a delightful place to visit.
Winchester is a delightful place to visit. It blends the old with the new extremely well. The cathedral has to be seen inside. A guided tour is available which is essential to appreciate fully the cathedral's remarkable history.
Further attractions are the wide range of excellent restaurants and pubs, museums and historic buildings.

Lovely historical sites and museums.
Lovely historical sites and museums. A walk along the trail was refreshing and seeing Winchester from Saint Catherine's Hill and lunch at the Handle Bar cafe at Saint Catherine's Hill was good value for money, lovely fresh panini's and friendly staff, not to mention the cake.
Plenty of eateries on an evening and quaint streets.

Winchester is a charming city which needs you to fully explore. As well as the Cathedral and Great Hall, you should walk right to the end of the High Street as see what is down each street- particularly at the top of the town. There is a wide variety of cafes and restaurants. We had a Nepalese meal at Marse which was great with "ancient grains".
The Tourist Information Centre were fantastically helpful. Do walk the Water Meadows on the other side of the Cathedral and visit St Cross- following the river and in the spirit of John Keats. Finally, walk around the ruins of Wolvesey Castle.

Nice city, good shopping and eateries on the pedestrianised high street. The Cathedral, the Mill, Wolvesey Castle (ruins) and the Great Hall are all worth a visit. Relaxing walks along the river and through small roads, the architecture is beautiful and the city has a good atmosphere. The church of St Swithun is a little gem and the Peninsula Barracks with the Military and Gurkha Museums are interesting. We didn’t have the time to see the Hospital of the Cross nor the Dean Garnier Garden nor the College but we are leaving these for our next visit.

Had a business meeting and a social event in the middle of the city. This hotel provided everything in a perfect location. The one-way system was tricky to navigate and the street signs are poor, but that's not the Hotel's fault.
Well situated for Winchester. We stayed for Xmas market. Bus stop right outside gates. Buses every half hour. Big hotel with free car parking. Absolutely best thing about it - The Staff! They were all so very friendly, helpful and nothing too much trouble. Really made the stay special. Would like to mention the breakfast team - kitchen cook was the most amazingly helpful person. Even when service closing at 9.30 she got everything out to cook a late-comer a breakfast and did it with a smile. Eggs cooked to order and nothing too much trouble!
From the moment we arrived we were treated exceptionally well. Our bags were taken up to our room whilst we went to park in the permitted areas. The room was very spacious and perfect for our needs. The breakfast that was pre-ordered each night was brought to our room at exactly the time requested, piping hot and everything ordered delivered. The location of the hotel to enable exploration of Winchester could not have been better and despite being in a town centre the room we stayed in "Nina Campbell" was extremely peaceful.
Friendly & very welcoming front of house.
We easily booked in for a swim.
The bedroom was very clean & tidy. We loved the lotus biscuits!
The bar staff were friendly and the manager helped us when we had a food query. The tables in the bar area were cleaned promptly between customers. Plus in the hotel itself there are lots of hand gel points.
Dinner was nice with the menu's available from check in. Breakfast was nice & hot. Decaf coffee was available.
A big Winchester house not far from the center - so convenient and easy to reach. Delightful hosts and my room was better serviced than a hotel. Great range of drinks and snacks and beautifully decorated.. Well lit (which is not always the case) and very easy access. - I simply needed a bed f,or the night and that is what I got but I was sad I couldn’t spend a little longer enjoying the calm !
It is our second stay at the Running Horse. It is good value for money and rooms are nicely decorated and comfortable. The toiletries in the bathroom are really good. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is ok but slightly overpriced as the ingredients and the coffe are average. The location is in a pretty village just outside Winchester and there is free parking at the hotel.
Nice old hotel with a new block of rooms overlooking a nice garden.
Nice and close to town and all that Winchester has to offer, comfortable beds and decent size rooms, tea and coffee and a kettle in the room.
Carpark on site with a daily charge of £12.
Breakfast was £13 and needed to be booked the evening before, didn't make it as we out late at night.
Friendly and quick check in and out.
Location great. Staff phoned us to confirm we were on our way and gave precise directions to the hotel. Very convenient for the city and car park. Breakfast was superb. Room was clean as was the well-fitted ensuite. Slightly quirky hotel (which I loved) was based on an old prison. This theme continued throughout including the dining area and bedroom with an authentic-looking door.
The location is fab. I've stayed here twice now - definitely worth booking the larger double as it is more than doubly nice (get a kettle and tea in the larger room, but not in the smaller?). The hotel was clearly once great and now is just a bit run down and shabby. Having said that, you can't get better value for money in Winchester!
The room was a good size, clean and comfortable. The spa facilities were really good for relaxing, and not busy when I went. The location is really good, just a short walk into town 10-15 minutes. Convenient car parking in council car park in front of the hotel, as the hotel parking was full during our stay.
We use this hotel regularly. There is a car park outside, which is an absolute god send compared to other Winchester hotels. The rooms are large, and there are windows you can open so they aren't claustrophobic. Overall, having stayed in all main Winchester hotels, this is the best option.
Location is unsurpassed for Winchester. You really are in the centre of everything, minutes from the shop and cathedral, as well as the walking paths and St Catherine's Hill. The hotel is precisely what you would expect, with all the little luxuries. Highly recommend.
Great location only 3 mins walk from the bottom of Winchester High Street. Pretty place overlooking the River Itchen with ducks floating by. Has a parking space, albeit narrow, under the property. Both rooms had comfortable, double beds. Nicely appointed flat.
Very charming and professional staff in a most lovely setting with cozy rooms in a darling Hampshire village. Quite close to Winchester and there's some public transport if you don't have a car to get you down to Hursley. Worth a detour for the Sunday roast!
The view of Winchester Cathedral from the picture window in the room is outstanding. The hotel isn’t overlooked, it’s right in the centre of things, with lovely staff and is amazingly good value for money in an expensive town like Winchester.
Quiet, beautiful rural location, but within easy reach of Winchester. Rooms and bar/restaurant had simple character, thoughtfully decorated. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast tasty.
