Brazilian Gateway to the Iguaçu Falls
One of the most popular touristic destinations in Brazil, Foz do Iguaçu is located on the Brazilian side of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Iguaçu Falls. Lying on the triple frontier between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, it also offers the Parque das Aves (Birds Park), the Itaipú Dam, and access to cheap shopping in the Paraguayan tax-free city of Ciudad del Este.
The word Iguaçu derives from the native Guaraní language, meaning “big water”. The spectacular falls are part of the natural frontier between Argentina and Brazil, and comprise 275 individual falls spread over 3 km in both countries, with a maximum height of 80 metres. Its water flow can be three times that of the Niagara.
Starting as a small village, Foz grew thanks to the flow of tourists, the construction of the bridges linking to Paraguay and Argentina, and the works on the Itaipú Dam and Hydroelectric Plant. Some of the best hotels in Foz do Iguaçu are located along the road linking to the national park. Nonetheless, most Foz do Iguaçu hotels are located in and around the central area.

We underestimated the time needed in Foz do Iguaçu.
We underestimated the time needed in Foz do Iguaçu. We extended our stay by 1 night from 2 nights to 3 (moving to wonderful Hotel Sanma because With Foz do Iguaçu had no room available), but should probably have added 2 nights instead of only 1. Count 0.5 days for Itaipu, 1 day for Iguaçu-falls Brazilian side, 1 day for Iguazu falls Argentinian side, 0.5 days for the wonderful, very instructive Parque das Aves, and 0.5 days for a quick hike through the 3 towns Foz (Bra) Ciudad del Este (Par) and Puerto Iguazu (Arg). Make sure you travel with autorized means of transportation from one country to the other.

Forget Victoria and Niagara, this is the only one you need to see! But make sure you see both sides as they are different. The Brazilian side is beautiful, the Argentinian side is awesomely dramatic. One day is sufficient if you start at opening time then transfer by taxi to Argentina and stay in a hotel there at the end.

Iguazu Falls - definitely worth visiting, but check tickets before you go as you might end up in a very long queue. Hotels offer to buy (not too big $$ difference). Birds park worth visiting as well as popping in to Argentina.

The Falls is a must see place to get a balanced impression of the magnificence of this natural wonder. Getting there is quite easy if you speak Portuguese/Spanish or are more adventurous, to take a local bus to and from the Falls and adjacent Bird Park - both excellent options with easy hiking trails. Uber and 99 are good options too or taxi - but be prepared for taxi drivers to drive up the price 400%. There are a number of restaurants in the park where you can stop for a bite or to refresh. They also helped us organise taxi from Foz do Iguacu to Puerto Iguazu on our last day, translated conversation with taxi driver for us. Rooms were clean. Hotel corridors were very clean. Breakfast was good (really good scrambled eggs). Location was fine - short walk to bus terminal for the bus to the falls (line 120 which costs R$ per person - need to buy a ticket before you get on the bus). Nice outer courtyard with tables for eating takeaway food. Air con was good.

Pools restaurant and etc. I really wanted the kid pool to be warmer but it’s not warmed up. The indoor pool also was a little too cold for comfort since Im travelling with a 2 year old. The location is decent. Just far from everything if you dont have a car. There are bus stops in front of the hotel but they take a long time to come around so we ended up wasting a lot of time waiting for busses to the tourist areas
