The old town has venetian architecture, the modern town that has grown around it has a wide array of shops and restaurants, and there are lots of beachfront businesses as you head along the seafront. Rethymno has the right mix of old town charm, modern hotels, a beach and a nice promenade. Plenty of places that serve authentic Greek food at very affordable prices, nice shopping opportunities, a pretty good beach - overall, I think Rethymno is better than Heraklion or Chania for a vacation stay.

As with everywhere in Greece, food was phenomenal. I even enjoyed the humorous "hard sell" barker at a dockside Taverna. "Are you hungry? You look hungry! Your hunger is subconscious!" and so forth. The hotel pool setting overlooking the beach is glorious, we loved spending time relaxing on the lounges. The location suited us well, with restaurants easy walking distance nearby, or the option of a ~50min walk or 6 euro taxi into the old town for a change of scenery and some more variety in options. We also found the majority of the staff very warm and helpful!

The place is impeccably run with focus on service and making guests feel welcome and comfortable at all times. There are plenty communal areas for playing cards etc and all facilities were clean and well looked after. The location is great for exploring the old Town and the harbour, it makes a nice central base for exploring Crete.

I had to leave early to connect with my flight in Heraklion and because I was going to miss out on breakfast (which was included in my stay), they made me a lovely ham and salad roll and fresh fruit for my journey. Location right on the beach front also a bonus :-)
