FAQs about hotels in Rotorua

A Volcanic Land of Wonders

Rotorua is living proof of the magnificent, and sometimes mind-boggling, might of nature. Smoking hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fast-spouting geysers give the surrounding landscape an almost other-worldly feel.

This New Zealand city sits in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s newest geothermal hotspot. It was created after the 1886 eruption that covered Te Wairoa Buried Village, between 2 of many lakes gracing this fertile terrain. By Lake Rotorua’s shores is the luxurious Polynesian Spa with its thermal pools. Just behind in Government Gardens are the city’s best cultural offerings: the Arts Village, Tamaki Maori Village and Rotorua Museum, in an elegant former bath house.

Native animals roam in Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park below Mount Ngongotaha, accessible via the Skyline cable car. The views while ascending make it obvious why this is called the Bay of Plenty. Tikitere Thermal Park on the opposite side of the lake is known as Hell’s Gate, but as long as you can ignore the sulphuric smell, the spas are simply heavenly.

More springs are in Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, whose surrounding forest is popular for mountain biking, and Wai-O-Tapu where the Champagne Pool is a striking mix of green and orange.

Booking.com’s accommodation range is as diverse as the scenery, encompassing luxury hotels, cheap hostels and motels near Rotorua Airport.

Rotorua was a great place to visit.

Rotorua was a great place to visit. Mitai Village, Hot beach, waimangu volcano were all interesting places to visit. If you like to hike, the 9 mile hike to hot beach and the hiking trails in the Mokaihaha Ecological area are both great hikes . Just don't stay at AWA hotel.

As we were only doing a two day stop over to catch up with family and friends, on our way to a wedding, it was just enough to get us time to do these visits and still have time for ourselves. As were not "exploring Rotorua" we did not need extra time. Would recommend at least 4 - 5 days if you are new to the place and want to do all those sights, that Rotorua has to offer.

Rotorua is a nice clean town with plenty of general shopping available. I felt that the tourist attraction were overpriced, but everything was well organized. The vulcanic activities are quite varied and unique.

The accommodation ideal for 3 adults with separate bedrooms: 1 with a double and a single bed - the other with a double bed, extremely comfortable. staff welcoming, 3 tv's. Room service breakfast which we liked and a the restaurant had a good evening menu selection. we had a jacuzzi and use of the spa bath and whilst the swimming pool was a bit limited for size and depth it was very relaxing. the Pitch and putt was fun and the games room ample size, cooling / relaxing 10 minute walk around the stream was refreshing. the staff are brilliant and i could not fault them - well done

I just enjoyed the town and the attractions I came to see. The townspeople were friendly, as were shop assistants. The people who were employed at the attractions went above and beyond to entertain us, educate us, teach us of their culture. They were all very proud of their heredity. Thoroughly enjoyable 😉

Rotorua is an incredible destination with a wide range of activities available. There's many wonderful scenic places that can be visited for free, such as Kuirau Park with its geothermal features at the lake end of the park, or if you prefer, take a stroll through the Redwood Forest. The Government Gardens are a very popular scenic spot and if you carry on down the road on the left you will find access to a lakeside geothermal area. I've not even mentioned the many beautiful lakes that Rotorua is famous for or the many excellent 'manmade' paid activities but there really is something for everyone. It's also a fabulous area for cycling, especially so if you enjoy mountain biking. There's plenty of dining options though my favourite for many years has been The Fat Dog Cafe and Bar which offers great coffee and a wonderful food selection.

Great stay! The reception/manager was lovely and provided me with an extra heater (I am a cold person) and remembered my name each time we saw each other! I was upgraded to a bigger room on arrival. I was able to park my hire car outside my window which was great. You can get change from reception for the laundry facilities. Everything in Rotorua was about a 6 to 10 minute drive from the motel, so it was a great location! I was able to walk to my car hire place (RAD Care Hire 10 - 15 minutes).

Really comfy, clean and good sized room (had a small couch which I wasn't expecting). Friendly, accommodating staff. Really liked the spa area. Great setting right on the lake. Excellent value for money especially during the school holidays. A very quiet, relaxing base to explore Rotorua. It's a little tired in areas around the hotel but I think this is reflective of the price and also how difficult the past few years have been for hotels in touristy areas.

I stayed at a lot of hotels during my month in New Zealand, but this was the nicest! Cozy, comfortable, quiet! So close to the redwoods and the treewalk, which is utterly wonderful day or night. Super convenient to Rotorua city center, but not close enough to be constantly smelling sulfur :) Vivien was a great host with lots of advice and helpful guidance. Plus she's just a joy to talk to over breakfast.

Would like to say that I stayed at this motel because of the spa room located at the back of the room. There are a lot of more expensive/modern/up to date motels/hotels in Rotorua without this facility which means if you want a spa you have to leave your expensive motel and go pay for a soak in a spa down the road. Also within easy walking distance of everything you need at the city centre.

the property was perfect, clean and had everything you would need! nice big cozy bed, kitchen had lots of complementary hot drink options, and bathroom was perfectly clean. The man working the front desk went above and beyond to make sure we were well set up for our stay. I will definitely be recommending this place to any of my friends and family that come to visit New Zealand.

Such a big house, lots of space for the family to spread out and have their own space….important after sharing rooms in hotels before this stop on our holiday. It was close to everything. The host made check in seamless. The little things like heaps of dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent helped out too! The kitschy decor was adorable and the kids loved it!

I was very happy to discover that the hotel rooms were new and well appointed. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I decided to have dinner at their restaurant and I was glad that I did, my dinner was excellent! The reception area also has a large gathering / game room. It turned into a fun evening with most of the guest socializing after dinner.
