Hands down the best experience you can have in Japan. Absolutely wonderful hosts!
We weren't going to impose by having dinner/breakfast due to my partner being a Celiac, until the owners encouraged us to stay for food. We had the best Gluten Free meal of our trip. It was perfectly authentic.
We are truly thankful to the owners for their efforts in making sure we were well fed.
We cannot recommend this accommodation enough.
11/10 review! Highly recommend to anyone looking to stay. Also the Onsen is amazing.
P.S the host won't take kokorozuke in the form of money but is happy to receive a food gift :)

Might be better in winter, but in spring only thing to see was monkey park, and that only takes a few hours ( mostly travel time) as it isn’t very big. I was of impression it was a whole mountain, but it is just one small area you see the monkeys from.
I’d suggest staying in nagano which was nice, and coming to Yamanouchi for a morning.

While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys,...
While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys, it wasn't what stood out to me about the area. The snow monkeys just have too many tourists to be truly enjoyable. Yamanouchi has beautiful mountain views, charming winding streets with quirky decorations, and onsen hopping among different ryokans is something to look forward to. If you look behind the main street, you'll see many stairways leading to many shrines. We had dinner at a sushi restaurant ran by an elderly couple, on traditional tatami floors. It felt like eating at someone's house, and they absolutely stuffed us with delicious sushi. Two nights would probably be the best to fully wind down.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields.
Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields. Need to have better maps (in English) available for the runs. A (live) board showing which lifts and runs are open would be great, prior to entering the areas.
The snow was amazing!!!!
Restaurants were good however the area appeared to be directed at locals (Japanese) rather than tourists. We had to do a lot of work to find somewhere to eat.
It would be great to have some public onsens available in the area.

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park...
Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park was the absolute highlight of a trip filled with highlights. Specifically we stayed at Onyado Hishiya Torazo, and loved everything about it - the room, the food, the staff, and the oh so relaxing onsen! We made the mistake of only booking one night and the short turn around combined with outside temps down in the low 20’s (F) meant we never did try any of the public onsen. Trust me - two days here is the minimum!
Snow Monkey Park ended up being another highlight (and between my wife and I, we have about 1,000 pictures to prove it!). Before going we were concerned that it might seem contrived at best and a bad situation for the monkeys at worst. But they were absolutely there of their own free will and happily making use of the large onsen on a cold winter’s day. Get there early - we got there about an hour after opening and wished we’d been an hour earlier. It started to fill up about 20 minutes after we got there.
Here’s the weird thing, and the only downside - and I don’t quite know how to explain it. The town was basically closed! And we were there Jan 26-27, a decent snow had fallen a couple days earlier and a light snow fell the morning of the 27th. I thought this would be big tourist season, but we barely saw another sole in town. And those few we did see were almost all tourists out taking pictures in their yukata. This made for a very quiet morning, which was great. But we had planned to pick up our luggage at the ryokan after visiting the monkey park and meander through town stopping to eat, drink, or shop as we made our way to the train station. But nothing was open so we caught an earlier train and ate in Nagano while waiting for our Shinkansen.

Its a great spot for visiting the snow monkeys and a quick snow board at Ryuoo Ski Resort. A walk through the older Shibu Onsen town is also fun for people who like that. We went to three different restaurants in the town and they were all good.
The negatives were that the roads and paths were slippery with ice, so bring appropriate footware if visiting in winter (although your hotel might have some).
Almost all places were cash only.
The hotel staff was wonderful. We had an amazing stay Onsen-hopping and visiting the Snow Monkeys. The staff told us that the best Onsen was public Onsen number nine, but in reality the best one was the outdoor one at the Ryokan! The meals were fabulous, we loved trying the many interesting dishes. We did both breakfast and dinner and were so full every day. The Ryokan is very old, and has a lot of character which we loved. Contrary to other reviews, we also found the rooms to be a very pleasant temperature.
The private onsen in our room was terrific! The entire stay I felt refreshed and relaxed! The location is near a couple of nice restaurants a quick walk from the hotel.
The staff were so friendly and helped with all of our needs. Smooth check in and quick but informative guide around the hotel.
Amazing breakfast buffet style and helping staff to set us up at the right table!
Very foreigner friendly, accommodating with everything and are very patient with our questions
Mr & Mrs Yumoto are wonderful hosts, pick up and drop off from station as well as drop off at monkey park.
I lost my wallet somewhere between Nagano and Yamanouchi and the hosts spent well over an hour ringing around restaurants and train stations eventually locating it at lost property at Nagano station (all cash & cards were still in the wallet).
Highly recommend this property and would stay again.
Location is superb being in the heart of Shibu onsen at Yudanaka. Also free pick up and delivery to the station and the Monkey Park. Some good restaurants within walking distance. Being a local Ryokan, has key access to all of the 7 public onsens which I used. What a treat. Just strolling around town in Yuakata provided is fun. Owners were very hospitable and there was also an onsen in the Ryokan.
Yes, it is a dated hotel. However, the value, location, friendly staff and nightly dinner buffets more than make up for it. Conveniently located across the Tagamagahara lifts and near the bus/shuttle stops. Hotel will also aid with your Yamato/Ta-q-bin delivery/pickup needs. We booked a private bathroom room and it was very roomy with enough space/storage for 4 of us. Would stay here again.
Best hotel we stayed during our two weeks travel in Japan. The staff is superb - they picked us up at the station, and carefully explained how to use the facilities and how to best enjoy the onsen town. They have guides including detailed information in English, so we never felt any friction. It is located in the main street of the historical onsen town too!
This is a property gem! It's in a scenic town and represents the area well. While a traditional "ryokan," the facilities are modern. The room was large and comfortable. The onsen was relaxing. The breakfast was the best of our trip - very traditional Japanese meal - with lovely service and tasty food! The staff was very pleasant and accommodating.
Onsen! Breakfast!! Room with tatami mats and hot water for making tea!!! Area is beautiful and interesting. Breakfast in Omodaka Hotel and in restaurants around town is traditional Japanese food. Shuttle bus from hotel to parking lot of the Snow Monkey Park and to the railway station was provided timely. Everybody very nice and helpful.
- it was close to the snow monkey park;
- the staff were very accommodating and kind;
- the private onsens were a great experience;
- dinner was perfect and our server was great;
- the garden in the centre of the hotel was lovely;
- they had a shuttle to take you to the hotel from Yudanaka Station
Quaint cosy cottage amongst the fir trees. So pretty and furnished beautifully. Very clean and close to lifts and hotels for alternative eating out. Home cooked meals and 2x terrific private use mineral bath. Had choice of doona or blanket and temp perfect to sleep.
The unique hotel created special vacation atmosphere for us, revealing japanese authentic interior, resort feeling and welcoming hosts. The room was big and comfortable, futons were perfect for deep and long sleep. Onsen for guests helped relax and enjoy the stay.
Superb location to walk to Jigokudani via the 2.5km road that is closed in the winter. Makes for a stunning short hike. The hostel is situated on the east side of Yamanouchi, right next to the main temple and makes for some lovely walking around that part of town.
so friendly. delicious meals. Small family run ryokan it is located on the quiet small road in the middle of the 9 Onsens popular to visit and do a stamp rally. it is opposite a hotel that looks like it is from Ghibli’s Spirited Away movie.
Position, so close to the ski lifts, the hotel staff were helpful and pleasant although only a few could speak English. The food was really good with a mixture of Japanese and Western food. The onsen was really a bonus after a days skiing.
The hotel was well kept, clean, had lovely onsen facilities and the staff were always friendly and willing to help. The room was spacious, had a beautiful view of the slopes across the road and towels were changed regularly.
Great hotel, closest to the entrance of the 1.8km walk to the monkeys.
Staff were great. All very helpful.
Shuttle bus service efficient.
Onsen nice both indoor & outdoor options.
Good WiFi.
Japanese breakfast amazing.
I found this hotel to be the nicest one on booking.com, so I decided to stay here. The hotel and facilities look just as nice as they do in the photos.
