Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded on 3 sides by water, it is spread over steep hills that make for great photo opportunities. None better than the zig-zag Lombard Street seen in many a film. Other movie stars are the streetcars plying the hill climbs – a little touristy, but still worth trying.
In the middle of the bay is Alcatraz island, famed for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t fancy going inside, the views towards the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere in San Francisco is life more laidback than on the Pacific beaches. Hire a bike and head out there via the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. The clam chowder served in (yes, actually in!) bread is a delight. Chinatown also has a great selection of good value restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want to stay in apartments along those lines, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something to suit. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here.
A lovely city, San Francisco has the lot! It's always sad to see the homelessness and rampant drug addiction in the Tenderloin and right down to Market St in some places. In most cases you are left alone, however travelling as a single female I can imagine it's intimidating. Try to avoid that area, everywhere else seems fine and safe as any big city. If you have a spare day for touristic activities highly recommend the SF Bay ferry system - can use them to get to the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier Museum! Neat!!

We enjoyed meeting many people and found the Americans very polite and helpful. We were also very surprised how clean and tidy San Francisco is - a joyful experience for holiday makers! I was very surprised that nobody - and I mean nobody!- reads newspapers anymore. If they do, it must be online - which is probably the main reason this city is so tidy!
As with many cities around the world now, we found that eating- out was comparatively expensive, but the quality was good and in most cases plentiful!
We only visited San Francisco - then Hawaii and Mexico very briefly - but the visit was hugely enjoyable and needs to be repeated in the future.

Loved San Fran, have to admit was a bit apprehensive having read some of the comments and social media however we felt safe at all times. We stayed in Fisherman's Wharf, frequented pier 39 several times, rode the railcar, enjoyed the night life and walked through China Town. Also took the ferry to Alcatraz which was enjoyable. Look there are homeless people around, but that's true now in nearly every major city. We didn't visit the city extensively but the 3 days we were there and the places we visited were very enjoyable. Thought the driverless cab was hilarious. People-friendly, prices-usual city surcharge, weather in march-bright and dry. Fab hotdogs from the stalls along the Wharf. Lots more we could have done so plenty to fill a 4/5 day trip.

Hayes Valley is a fun, beautiful area in San Francisco.
Hayes Valley is a fun, beautiful area in San Francisco. It’s a great area to stay to visit SF Jazz, SF Opera, the Asian Art Museum and so much more. The restaurants and shopping are varied and often pretty memorable, making you want to return. Walking around the neighborhood, you’ll find a few nice parks full of people just enjoying their day.

We drove and left our rental in the underground parking at the hotel it was expensive to park but the Riu Fisherman’s Wharf was a very nice hotel with a fantastic breakfast buffet included.
We pre booked Alcatraz tickets and a boat cruise for the following day both were great and should be booked well in advance. We enjoyed the touristy Fishermans wharf area, food was expensive everywhere. We had a great ride on the hop on hop off bus which took us around town and over the Golden Gate Bridge the bus driver was great and tells you good spots to get off or Not. We then hoped on the historic trolley which took us back to Fishermans Wharf. We spent 3 days in San Francisco which I felt was great. I wouldn’t go walking outside after dark and know where the unsafe areas of the city are.
This hotel is an old building with a lot of character. The room was quite spacious and had a kitchenette which was very handy with a small fridge and microwave. The bed was very comfortable and the reception area had comfy leather sofas and was a nice place to spend time whilst waiting to go to the airport. The location is good, a short walk to Union Square and there are good bar and restaurant options nearby plus a superette next door.
If you're ever in SF the mission area is the best! Union hotel is especially 🔥 It's got security close by because of the dance club next door and it's gated. Check out San Francisco ya'll. My Grandmother was right. It's nice! #travel
PS: the "Sandwich Place" across the street has the best fucking sandwiches. Tell him Amos sent you and I bet he'll laugh :) Good people for real!

Received free upgrade to an excellent room facing the city with balcony - sound during night wasn't too bad, and during day also sufficiently dampened by glass. Located right off Union Square, easy access to different modes of transportation (e.g., bus/metro/cable car). Just above Tenderloin district (an area which you should avoid), but not noticeable in streets around hotel.
Loved hotel Nikko. The room was great size, bed super comfortable, everything was modern and well maintained. I stayed there with my 3yo son, and we enjoyed all the facilities, including the pool and jacuzzi. The hotel is in a great location, close to supermarket, restaurants, transport and attractions in downtown - Cable car, Macys, Union Square.
The hotel is guarded with security guards at the lobby which is safer at night. Reception at 3rd floor with the restaurant and waiting area full with funky and colorful decoration on wall which made it vibrant. Room is clean, comfortable, great view. Location is strategic which is next to union square, BART station and other public transport.
The location was everything. Located in downtown, close by to the mall, movies, restaurants, and union square. The beds were extremely comfy and the room was very spacious. Room comes with an empty refrigerator which is great, unlike other hotels in SF that have items inside for you to purchase, which leaves no space to put items.
Location of hotel was near shopping area around union Square. Hotel provides coffee maker which we can use for hot water. There is an ice maker and water dispenser at every level, very convenient and useful for guests. Lounge chair in the room served as a third bed. Comfortable.
Convenient location to Union Square and Chinatown. The hotel upgraded my room to one with a larger bed and provided a fridge for me. The pastries, tea and coffee in the mornings were an added bonus, and providing a microwave oven in the seating area was very much appreciated.
Lily the receptionist was the most amazing person we've met! She helped us a lot with organizing our trip in San Francisco and South California, gave us lots of todos and tips.
Hotel is clean, great value for money and perfect location, a block from Union square.
This is the best stay I have enjoyed in San Francisco! The location was convenient with easy access and short walk to the bus service to get downtown.
The room was clean and pleasant, we could have had a better view, but maybe that is reserved for the suites?
Layne hotel is a very good option to stay in San Francisco. Very good located just 15 minutes walking of the Moscone, and 5 minutes walking to the Union Square, Ryan has an excellent customer service always pending on our requests. I will back definitely.
The location is great, very close to the Union Square.
The staff is friendly.
They have a happy hour in the afternoon when they offer free drinks in their bistro area.
The hotel is interesting, it has somehow an exhibition in the honor of the military.
Is was very clean, the hotel smelled nice. There was a big common area with games and a bar which was very useful since everything closes at 9 in SF.
It is very close to everything. I think this is the best location you can get as a tourist in San Francisco
The room was relatively clean and decent value for the area around the hotel. The area is quiet, relatively safe at night and a close walk to the piers as well as union square. It is a short (8 min) walk to the nearest major subway line.
Great location, modern concept and design, awesome security system! Fair value for money, especially for San Francisco Union Square area. Easy access to public transportation and great proximity to wonderful restaurants.
Had a great stay at Chancellor! The staff were very accommodating and the location of the hotel was the best, it’s very near Union Square. It was also a plus that there was free coffee, tea, and cookies at the lobby.
Value for money. The best hotel at the best location! Exactly at union square and everything is in 20-30 minutes walk. Large room, comfortable beds, the staff was cleaning everyday! Totally recommend
The staff was always very helpful and quick to answer any questions. The common areas of the hotel are beautiful and well kept. The view from my room to the Union Square was spectacular!
I have been in this hotel many times. What I like best is (1) free parking and (2) its location, within walking distance from China town, Union square, North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf.
The location is close to shopping in the Union Square area and the theater district, as well as an assortment of restaurants. I would definitely stay at the Warwick San Francisco again!
