It’s very quiet, very few non hotel restaurants, overpriced food everywhere, can’t swim in the sea unless you don’t mind knee deep water. There’s no town, or town centre outside the beach hotels, so a long stay would be challenging if you want more than just lounging by the hotel pool.

Matemwe and its area is a quiet place where you can relax and enjoy the beach, the activities (snorkeling, swimming with dolphins) especially if you are a couple, because the village is not very full of enterteinments or night parties.

Crystal clear water - despite there being sea urchins - if you have rock/ aqua shoes - you can still swim and explore the waters and reefs.
The beaches are a lot quieter and peaceful than the busier beaches up north.
The tides are also fascinating to watch- you can walk out to the reefs and cycle along the beaches when they go out!

Marafiki gets a 10/10 from us on all fronts - breakfast, lunch, dinner, pool, cleanliness, hospitality, music, sustainability, beach, communication.
My husband and I stayed 4 nights at Marafiki after our Safari and had the most fabulous time. The rooms were very clean and quiet, and beautifully set up.
The food is exceptional - please try the tuna tartar and all the specials!
We had a relaxing time at the spa - you must try the full body scrub and massages.
We used the free kayaks during sunset and enjoyed the stunning view from the water. The water is shallow so even if you go far, you can get off the kayak and swim.
Since the hotel is east facing - sunrise is exceptionally beautiful. The water is still and shallow, and you can see all the fisherman walk up to the reef to catch the fish.
The hotel also arranged a cooking lesson in Matamwe village for us - we learned how to cook ‘muchuzi’ from scratch which was a very meaningful experience.
Overall- no negatives. We had the best time and will be back!

The beach is beautiful, but it's not really a beach you can swim on - there's a big tidal range - when it comes in it's quite choppy with lots of seaweed, and when it's out its corally with lots of urchins. But it's interesting to watch the local people looking for octopus and shellfish every day.
It's quite a quiet area - all the bars are part of hotels. A few nice local restaurants around. Quite a lot of beach touts, which we found off putting. Not loads of activities to do in the area - 1/2 day snorkelling/dolphin watching trips at Mnemba Island basically.
Zanziblue it’s a paradise on earth ! i was in a lot of this type of hotel on whole world but Zanziblue … it’s state of mind. I have never felt like in this hotel before. If you come to Zabzibar you must check this place … people, food, hotel, garden, view, beach, massage, joga, salsa class… Wow . Thank you Zanziblue team, you are the best people in the world! thank you for everything ! I don’t have world to show how we spend this amazing time with U <3 Sabina and Doris … you girls are angels.
We had a very pleasant and relaxing stay at Mambo Paradise. The location is amazing, as it’s right off the beach and you can go dolphin and snorkeling easily from there ❤️
The room was clean and the staff very kind and helpful. Kasia is an amazing host and everyone did their best to help us with our requests and make us feel very welcome.
The food was amazingly tasty and we highly recommend to try sea food as it’s freshly coming directly from the fish market, next to the hotel. .
Although I was passing by and stayed only for a day, it was as if I could not leave... the resort is located right on the beach, has a clean pool, and the staff knows how to make your stay pleasant, is very careful in the relationship with customers. One thing I really liked was the fact that although the electricity was cut off in Matemwe, the hotel had hot water and electricity from alternative energy. A big plus for the hotel management. I would come back anytime
This place is just paradise. The staff and the owner are customer oriented and are doing everything to make you feel confortable. The room are really good and clean, the common area is perfect if you want to chill for a day or two at the pool (garden is just beautiful and well maintained). The breakfast is perfect, meals are good and cocktails taste great. And of course, there is wifi in all the hotel, which is not common in Zanzibar. I can only recommend !
Paradise! Absolute perfect getaway and so many things to do from this sidel all tours can be arranged by the hotel with ease and we had the BEST guide and now our friend, kitou
Highly recommend, rooms just lovely on the beach, feels completely safe, very few mosquitos, the staff all so accommodating and friendly, a fantastic music night with local artists and the restaurant is exceptoonal
Honestly the best holiday and absolutely will be staying again!
It is located near a small village. the beach is in front of the hotel, it isn’t the best place to swim but it is the perfect place to see local life of the village people and the fish market. Great staff, very kind, friendly and helpful. The breakfast is delicious and very large. If you book the dinner, you can eat a dish (starter or main course) at lunch and the other at dinner. The food is very good! The room is very nice and big!
I spent a total of 17 days in Zanzibar house on a solo vacation. I highly recommend this hotel. It’s a great place to relax and the location on the beach is just exquisite. The hospitality from the staff was fantastic, they were well mannered and catered to my needs. I was also moved by the kindness of Max and Mariam, they were very kind to me when I fell ill during my holiday. I can’t say enough of how much I enjoyed my time there.
This tranquil hotel fronting on to Matemwe beach is a perfect haven to relax and enjoy the delights of Zanzibar. The rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished with Zanzibari furniture and local fabrics. The food is excellent and the staff are friendly helpful and efficient. The owners are present and always at hand to assist, talk to their guests and make them feel welcomed to this beautiful Retreat.
Fantastic location on the Beach (Little bit of bumpy access road but it is in Zanzibar). Absolutely brilliant staff. Good food and wine, Sparkling clean pool and facilities. We were made to feel so welcome. Hotel brilliant at arranging any trips etc. and they have good local knowledge of better paces to go/visit etc, Probably the best Boutique Hotel I have ever stayed in
the hotel was excellent in every way, easy check in and good communication, beautiful rooms and facilities, welcoming staff, and most of all the restaurant was top notch! the beach was amazing and better for swimming than we had expected, despite the tide. it was a more quiet beach with lots to do around the hotel. would stay here again in a heart beat.
The hotel is comfortable and aesthetic, and it's in a absolutely beautiful location. I really enjoyed the breakfasts, and the dinners were tasty too, big portions! But the thing that made it all beyond wonderful is the staff. They are attentive and kind, and they really made us feel at home. I would definitely reconsider it.
Very clean, well kept, small hotel that provides a heaven of peace and privacy in Zanzibar. Staff very attentive. Held by a family who cares about the facility like their home. Good food at the restaurant. 1min walk to the beach. Good value.
Hotel is nice, with sea view. Room was cozy & clean. The staff is super friendly. Near with the hotel it is a beautiful island with dolphins, the best snorkeling for us in Zanzibar was at this place (previously we tried 3 other places)
Let’s say that the Hotel is extremely well managed and organized with wonderful Tanzanian people working there, on the best Zanzibar beach - Food Excellent - Nice Setting - Really the Best in Zanzibar specially with Kids
We were staying at the villa , we had our privet access to the beach ! It is so peaceful and beautiful . The staff were friendly and accommodating. If you want to be isolated from the world , this hotel is perfect !
The property has a spectacular design…It’s breathtaking and beautiful.
The beach is on site, it’s private and security is serious about keeping hotel guests unbothered by the public within a designated perimeter.
Freshly renovated hotel, nice and clean room, everything functional, very large and nice garden, friendly staff and the beach ...beautiful and wild. The price quality ratio was very good. :)
One of the best , stuff very friendly and helpful, hotel so close to the island of diving , food very good , beach so quite and beautiful highly recommend for a relaxing holiday
