Pongwe is an isolated beach, at low tide the sea is very far away and, even at high tide, it is very shallow - you cannot swim. Kiwengwa beach, next door (10 minutes by car) is much better, more lively, with many shops and good hotels.

There is not much to do in the local area other than visit other hotel resorts. We did visit a local school to make a donation and I would advise bringing something with you to donate e.g notebooks, sweets, money

Small remote holiday village with the white sand beach but not having good beach maintenance (seaweed, some dirt on the beach). Little bit far from anything in Zanzibar (far from Stone city and airport, far from spectacular Nungwi and Paje beach). No bars, restaurants, shops and infrastructure outside the holiday resort due to remote location and low density of tourists.

At first sight you can say....what to do here ?....no shops, just some local fruits selling points, no crowded areas, less traffic than anywhere but more nature than anywhere around. It's exactly the opposite comparing with Paje. If you need a quiet, family friendly, uncrowded spot.....ask for Pongwe. And if you want to understand why I'm saying these....just go on Pongwe beach when low tide is there.

I did not visit Pongwe town.
I did not visit Pongwe town. I stayed in a luxury boutique hotel north of the town as I like a quiet holiday. The only problem was the tide leaving an unattractive expanse of muddy rocks. The hotel's pontoon helped with access to the sea when the tide was high.

The accommodation and restaurant in Weavers Lodge was outstanding and the beach was idyllic. The tide tends to be out until about 3pm (July/Aug stay) and there are some sharp rocks - if your feet are particularly fragile, water shoes are a good idea. We cycled to the next village - an enjoyable afternoon trip. Very friendly locals.
Pongwe Bay Resort was a perfect holiday location for us. Our room was big and cozy with balcony and view to the garden, staff was extremely helpful and friendly and the breakfast options were one of the best I’ve seen. Resort has its own wellness center and they also have variety of stuff for you to use (paddle boards, water shoes, snorkeling equipment, football, yoga mats etc). Whenever we wanted to ho sightseeing or travel around hotel organized a driver for us. Pool area was also perfect with sea view and nice breeze from the sea.
That you had a private beach, that the hotel keeps it clean and there is security. So you never feel hassled. Everyone that is employed by the hotel goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable and happy. The food was unbelievably good, fresh seafood daily. There was even a vegetarian option. Our rooms were chic with a traditional flare. We will definitely be back thank you Pongwe Beach Lodge for our beautiful family holiday holiday in Zanzibar.
The location is incredibly unique, the lodge has only 5 rooms, the staff really cares about the guests, Margarita was amazing, she went above and beyond to help us and anticipate our needs, she also helped us plan our trip and recommended amazing places to visit.
The food at the restaurant was the best we had in Zanzibar.
We stayed at Sultan Villa, it has the best views, and the interior is authentic. I truly loved this place.
The breakfast was good, several choices on the menu. I wish I could have kept out of the bread bowl😋. All the meals we had there were very good and reasonably priced.
The hotel and especially the staff were exceptional! They positively cater to your needs.
We used the front desk for day trips and everything went very smoothly. I can’t recommend this hotel enough, our stay was fantastic!
For the first time, everything was perfect! My expectations were high due to the positive reviews but they were still exceeded.
The staff was exceptionally professional and friendly, the atmosphere and design of the hotel are wonderful, the food and drinks (esp. the juices!) were fantastic. I hope to come back in the future!
Pros:
-Huge villa, with nice porch and cute little plonge pool; and perfect view onto the beach
-Pongwe is THE most remote place in Zanzibar still, so book if you want total tranquility (but also lack of any kind of shop;)
-Nice bedrooms, with good airco
-Part of a consortium with another villa and a small restaurant.
Staff very nice and will do extra things to help. Generally peaceful, although some noise from neighbouring hotels. Nice having bushbabies around and lots of trees. Easy to chat with other people staying. Restaurant area is nice, next to the sea, good breeze from the sea to keep cool. Felt relaxed and safe.
The hotel is new, super clean and comfortable. Beautiful beach setting and lovey facilities. Rooms are stylishly decorated and the hotel grounds leafy and green. I spent 4 nights here with my family over new year and we had a great time. Staff are all really helpful, friendly and accommodating.
The staff are very helpful and smiley all the time, the resort very beautiful and clean, very tasty food, the Manager Mr. Riccardo is very nice and helpful. We enjoyed the beach and the swimming pool. The kinds were very happy. Best resort in Zanzibar from all sides.
exceptional service, lovely rooms, amenities like providing guests with a beach basket, robes, and a sun hat in case you forgot to pack it. The beach was secluded and very quiet. The air conditioner above the bed was fantastic.
Our stay couldn’t get any smoother, hotel is cozy and clean, there is no crowd and no stress! Great place to relax, authentic pool, friendly staff, Frank showed us around and was very professional and always in a good mood -)
We had a lovely time here at seasons lodge. To make it easy we can say that we liked everything about this hotel... But above everything the most fantastic and lovely staff. Absolutely everybody was the most amazing people!
Everything was amazing. We enjoyed our time with the warm welcome from the staff including the hotel general manager..
The surprises prepared by the hotel regarding our anniversary was appreciated..
Tikitam has a great staff , they really did extra-miles to make me comfortable. Starting from the hotel manager to the Kitchen and housekeeping.
they have a great dinner and wonderful atmosphere.
Very friendly staff and good food. Pool was a good alternative considering the sea was rocky and affected by low/high tide. Resort was clean and well shaded area with palm trees and beach baby.
Small place without the extreme luxury feeling of other hotels. Much more personal than other places. Excellent breakfast and good meals otherwise at a reasonable price. Very quiet.
an unique experience all together .. one of the premier resort in Zanzibar..staffs are very very friendly.they welcome you in unique way which feels really overwhelming.
It was really nice
And they have a driver called Mousa he was wonderful incase anyone wants to go around zanzibar definitely take Mousa as your driver asanteni sana
