It’s very quiet, very few non hotel restaurants, overpriced food everywhere, can’t swim in the sea unless you don’t mind knee deep water. There’s no town, or town centre outside the beach hotels, so a long stay would be challenging if you want more than just lounging by the hotel pool.

Matemwe and its area is a quiet place where you can relax and enjoy the beach, the activities (snorkeling, swimming with dolphins) especially if you are a couple, because the village is not very full of enterteinments or night parties.

The Location, The hotel it self and design plus the exterior is just beautiful. The most important was the staff...all levels from front desk to restaurant/kitchen...very professional and the hospitality is the best. What ever you request...they will make sure you get it...!

Crystal clear water - despite there being sea urchins - if you have rock/ aqua shoes - you can still swim and explore the waters and reefs.
The beaches are a lot quieter and peaceful than the busier beaches up north.
The tides are also fascinating to watch- you can walk out to the reefs and cycle along the beaches when they go out!

Marafiki gets a 10/10 from us on all fronts - breakfast, lunch, dinner, pool, cleanliness, hospitality, music, sustainability, beach, communication.
My husband and I stayed 4 nights at Marafiki after our Safari and had the most fabulous time. The rooms were very clean and quiet, and beautifully set up.
The food is exceptional - please try the tuna tartar and all the specials!
We had a relaxing time at the spa - you must try the full body scrub and massages.
We used the free kayaks during sunset and enjoyed the stunning view from the water. The water is shallow so even if you go far, you can get off the kayak and swim.
Since the hotel is east facing - sunrise is exceptionally beautiful. The water is still and shallow, and you can see all the fisherman walk up to the reef to catch the fish.
The hotel also arranged a cooking lesson in Matamwe village for us - we learned how to cook ‘muchuzi’ from scratch which was a very meaningful experience.
Overall- no negatives. We had the best time and will be back!

The beach is beautiful, but it's not really a beach you can swim on - there's a big tidal range - when it comes in it's quite choppy with lots of seaweed, and when it's out its corally with lots of urchins. But it's interesting to watch the local people looking for octopus and shellfish every day.
It's quite a quiet area - all the bars are part of hotels. A few nice local restaurants around. Quite a lot of beach touts, which we found off putting. Not loads of activities to do in the area - 1/2 day snorkelling/dolphin watching trips at Mnemba Island basically.
Everything!!!!
The best service ever! The best hotel in zanzibar!
The hotel is next to the beach. The beach is less for swimming because of many seaweed.
The hotel is beautiful, new, clean, modern, and there is also a spa.
They sang to us happy anniversary and surprised with chocolate cake.
Also the bed was well organized and in the room we found sparkling wine!
The view from the room is outstading, especially during sunrise.
The area is not crowded as other part of Zanzibar and for us it was perfect!
The food was very good!
My husband and I had a very pleasant time in Marafiki Beach hotel during 4 nights. We were warmly welcomed by all the staff, the view to the beach and pool from the room was exceptional, and the atmosphere in this hotel was really peaceful. The hotel is ideally located in front of the beach and very close to Mnemba island for all kind of activities. Special thanks to Hugo, Magdalena, Georges, Ali, Juma, for serving us at the restaurant and bar and thanks to all the staff who made our journey memorable !
This was our third stop on the island after Stone Town and Nungwi. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of the area and the hotel itself. We actually hardly left the hotel grounds because it was that accomodating. The pool and seating right at the beachfront were plenty and comfortable with enough shade. We were there on Wednesday when there was live music. Band was really nice. Food and drinks were good. The guys working the bar and tables were also all very friendly.
Rooms were large and clean.
This place is an oasis of tropical, spiritual & happy vibes. It is an heaven for travellers that want a down to earth experience, beautiful garden & common areas. Salama is a super intimate place. The rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated. We travelled around for 6 weeks in Zanzibar and Salama was easy the best value we got. The beach is just 7 minutes walk from the hotel.
A big bonus is all the cosy places you can work or just relax & read a book at. At Salama we felt at home.
Beautiful hotel, modern, excellent customer service, friendly staff, next to a stunning beach. Delicious food and good drinks, great entertainment. Massive thank you to Maya for keeping our rooms exceptionally clean. Complimentary prosecco on arrival. Room upgrade as one of our rooms initially didn't have a great view. Top hotel I would recommend to anyone staying in Zanzibar. Variety of restaurants to choose from. 10/10. Absolutely loved staying here
Fantastic location of the hotel in the middle of a local village at the beach. Perfect host with the warmest welcome you can imagine and the way every single staff members treat you makes you feel king and queen. Amazing white beach in front of you with the magical sound of the waves of the Indian Ocean makes it a paradise and a must-stay when you are on the beautiful island of Zanzibar
one of the most amazing vacations we’ve ever had, the location and the rooms are just perfect for a summer retreat, the reception (specifically Sabina) was so welcoming and helped us alot during our stay and made is so comfortable for us, the food is extremely delicious as well! I highly recommend Zanziblue for your stay in Zanzibar
The staff is friendly and welcoming and Malgo & Tomek are the best! Genuinely interested in their visitors and will go out of their way to ensure your comfort.
The facility is very clean and well kept. I also really liked that the beach in Matemwe is relatively clean and no one hustling for buys.
I’ve been in a few hotels in Zanzibar, more expensive then this one and I can tell you by far that this is the best one we’ve stayed in. So quiet, relaxing, not too many rooms, not too many people. You have the beach to yourself 30 seconds away. The food was also delicious.
Zanzibar Magic Boutique hotel was the perfect stop on our honeymoon to Zanzibar. The staff were so friendly, the food amazing and the location was right on the beachfront. Matemwe beach is quieter than Nungwi or kendwa but the sea was lovely to swim in.
Very comfortable and relaxing hotel in a good location. The manager Leigh provided excellent personal service and the whole staff was friendly and professional. Breakfast was delicious and we ate a few dinners there too. Enjoyed the live music.
POOL AREA WAS AMAZING. VERY FRIENDLY PEOPLE WORKING THERE. THE HOTEL WAS CLEAN AND BREAKFAST NICE. THE OCEAN IS SO NEAR AND THE BEACH IS AMAZING. YOU COULD DO YOGA AND PLAY VOLLEYBALL IF YOU FEEL SO. 10/10. LITTLE OASIS IN MATEMWE
Zanzibar Queen is an amazing hotel with a wonderful garden and cozy atmosphere, fantastic and friendly staff, tasty food. Rooms are well equipped. Beach is pristine, super quiet. We really enjoyed our stay and can only recommend.
Friendly staff who went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable - they even helped me arrange a hairstylist to come to the hotel. Really peaceful environment. I loved being able to walk onto the beach. Great breakfast!
Lot of amenities are free of charge - bikes, badminton, yoga, village tour… also it feels pretty private on the beach comparing to other (5star) hotel we stayed in while in Zanzibar. Great value for money.
Freshly renovated hotel, nice and clean room, everything functional, very large and nice garden, friendly staff and the beach ...beautiful and wild. The price quality ratio was very good. :)
The beach bungalow had a great view and was spacious. Quiet and very nice hotel with friendly staff. Delicious food on the menu, but expensive for Zanzibar.
