In the city centre
You can’t go wrong in the centre. The entire district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bordered by the Salzach River, Kapuzinerberg Mountain and Mönchsberg Mountain. See the view from atop Hohensalzburg Fortress, or head to the Salzburg Museum for a multimedia journey through the city’s illustrious history.

This residential area has more than a little intrigue to captivate the casual visitor. It lies in the western part of the city, between Old Town and the airport. There’s a lot going on in Elisabeth-Vorstadt. Wedged between the Salzach River and the Main Train Station, the residents enjoy easy connections to the city, plus plenty of local shops and verdant nature. Shop in Forum and Kiesl, see the iconic statue of “Sisi” by the station, and try stylish Jazzit! Bar for an evening of music and merriment.

Close to the border between Austria and Germany, Salzburg is a baroque masterpiece surrounded by stunning alpine scenery. It’s divided into two halves – one old, the other new – by the Salzach River, and overlooked by the hillside Hohensalzburg Fortress. You can visit this centuries-old castle either on foot or by funicular, to explore the medieval chambers and museum that displays objects from the era of the prince-archbishops.
Salzburg is also where The Sound of Music was filmed. The Von Trapp family immortalised in the world-famous musical did actually exist, and you can learn all about their lives and the making of the film on the Sound of Music guided tour. Major locations seen in the film include Hellbrunn Palace and Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where classical music concerts are held.
But this UNESCO-listed city has always been alive with the sound of music. As the birthplace of Mozart, whose legacy is preserved by an elegant statue and museum displaying many of his childhood instruments, Salzburg has hosted grand classical music concerts for over 200 years. The best time to catch one is during summer at Salzburg Festival, when the world’s greatest tenors and conductors gather to perform.
Close to Mozart's birthplace is Getreidegasse, a charming shopping street where wrought-iron signs still hang above shops to highlight what they sell.
If there's time to explore beyond the city, venture out to Salzburger, the surrounding region known for its breathtaking landscapes.

Beautiful scenery.
21 April 2024
Beautiful scenery. Fun Sound of Music tour taken with Panorama tours (I’d recommend them). Lots of interesting places to view and visit. Great for walks and cafe/bar stops along the routes. We went by train to Vienna for a day trip and took a bus tour around the city. A full day and a little tiring but well worth it. Reception staff at the hotel booked the train and taxi tickets for us which was very helpful.
The most wonderful little jewel.

The most wonderful little jewel. Such a pretty town with so much to explore but all fairly compact. Loved the river trip. Loved the lift up to the top of the Munchsburg, the beautiful walks and the great little cafe at the top. Loved the Hohensalzburg fortress and all the history. Loved the Mozart concert in the Mirabell palace. Loved the buildings, the river, the shops, the cafes and restaurants. Will recommend to everyone

Salzburg is nice place to visit and its location is between wonderful cities which can be easily reached either by car, buses or train during your stay at Salzburg. 1. Hallstatt is one of the best places ( almost 1 hour and 10 minutes by car). 2. Zell am see / Kaprun (1:36 hrs by train or car).

Very nice, rather small city, with a lot of thing to do and see, a little bit expensive food and tons of things to do and see for children. Very good transportation and must buy is the salzburg card. Very good train connection to vienna airport, 3h direct. You can have lunch in it.

Its a beautiful city to explore and enjoy You might need at least 5 days to explore the city (2 days) and near by attractions (3 days). I would recommend Salzburg over Vienna to visit. Must visit places with family (all attractions close by 6 pm): 1) Old city 2) Mozart Birth place 3) Mozart Living house 4) Stroll across the River 5) Fortress Hohensalzburg (need full day) 6) Dom Church and other churches around the old city Near by attractions (full day for each attraction): 7) Salt mine 8) Hallstatt town 9) other mountain/ski attractions

Nice ambience, small area easy to cover on foot. Friendly young restaurant owners/workers, lots of alt places to check out (Afro Café, Genusswerkstatt) it doesn't always have to be the Sacher!
