About Vienna

Including tips for the best time to visit Vienna

Brimming with imperial palaces, endless architectural gems and a trademark café culture, you'll never be short of things to do in Austria's charming capital.

The historic city centre is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often referred to as an open-air museum. Ringstrasse boulevard is dotted with beautiful buildings including the Rathaus (town halll), the Spanish Riding School and the Hofburg Palace. However, the best place to take in the city's signature sights is in the MuseumsQuartier – a collection of captivating museums, cosy cafés and bars housed in former stables. Highlights include the MUMOK, Leopold Museum, Kunsthalle, Architekturzentrum and the interactive children's museum Zoom.

Take in the unique atmosphere of the city's coffee houses at Café Schwarzenberg, the oldest café on the Ringstrasse, which serves typical liver dumpling soup and apple strudel. There's also Café Central, where famous figures such as Leo Trotsky and Sigmund Freud would socialise. Afterwards, take a trip to the Riesenrad for some great views over the city. This age-old Ferris wheel rises to 65 metres and takes around 20 minutes to complete a rotation.

Vienna International Airport is situated just outside the city limits and can be reached easily by train, bus or taxi.

Vienna is wonderful.

Vienna is wonderful. Perfect both for sightseeing, museum visiting and relaxing in coffee shops. Get Vienna Pass, it's extremely profitable if you want to visit many museums. All museums were great, I especially liked Albertina, Kunsthistorishes Museum, Narrenturm, Imperial Treasury and Weltmuseum. The Zoo was lovely. Ferris Wheel was skippable :)

Beautiful city with a lot of green areas, amazing architecture and museums. I really liked The Butterflies House, Madhouse Tower and Museum of Art. I couldn't find some places for drinking coffee or drinks in parks or nearby the river, but maybe I haven't looked for enough :-) A lot of cafeterias and restaurants are closed since Saturday's evening till Monday morning, what is a shame and odd for me. I recommend Wien to visit and see, but it will be not a return-place.

Vienna is a fantastic city to visit.

Vienna is a fantastic city to visit. Just make sure you do your research beforehand. There are so many historic, religious, cultural, museum opportunities, you need to know where you want to go before you get here! You will not need a rental car if you stay within the city, because public transport is more than adequate (and very well maintained!) Learn a few basic German phrases before you get here, but, don't worry, everyone knows English, too. If you travel out to the countryside, you can still communicate, but not quite as easily.

Vienna is a beautiful city, we only spent a long weekend but could easily have had more days. Lots of culture and sites to see and easy enough to walk around or plenty of public transport to take. The food was amazing, would recommend to pre book as a lot of places were already full if you didn't.

We've found Vienna to be the same as 6 years ago, museums, monuments and attractions' wise. Prices, though, went through the roof on admission tickets to various venues and restaurants meals. We've still revisited 'The Albertina', Hofburg Sisi Museum, St Stephan's Cathedral, and so on.

Vienna is a stunning city to visit whether enjoying beautiful coffee, browsing in shops of interest or going to a concert. I am an avid knitter and loved the yarn shops in Vienna. I highly recommend wollewien, Pingouin and Laniato. They each had a great selection of yarns. wollewien was my top pick because the staff were extremely knowledgeable and very helpful.
