About Ubatuba

Including tips for the best time to visit Ubatuba

Located right on the Tropic of Capricorn and synonymous with a sun-kissed coastline and jungle-clad interior, the city of Ubatuba is the jewel in São Paulo state's crown. The emerald-green peaks of the Serra do Mar provide a dramatic backdrop to the city and are perfect for hiking, and a series of idyllic beaches lie within easy reach.

While there are plenty of other things to do in Ubatuba, the main reason to come here is for the series of paradisiacal beaches that line the coastline. Considered some of Brazils’ best and wildest, the beaches here are nothing short of spectacular. For a secluded swimming spot, head to the Praia do Cedro – a palm-fringed stretch of sand known for its deep green water – or for some of the best surfing in the region, Itamambuca Beach is your best bet. Other spots include the popular Praia Grande, the wave-washed Praia Vermelha do Norte and the remote Praia da Fortaleza which offers hidden rock pools and panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean.

After an action-packed day of surfing, water sports and beach time, you’ll need to replenish yourself, and Ubatuba’s culinary scene will more than suffice. Spread out across the city centre and the region’s many beaches, the restaurants and cafés here offer up both traditional and original dishes made from hearty local fare and lip-smackingly good seafood.

Great Location, lots of space in the hotel, nice pool area, bar and restaurant. Quiet spaces, but they made the mistake to put a kids playground right on the restaurant which made the breakfast experience a little nosier than expected.

Just a small town with folk-like atmosphere.

31 December 2022

Just a small town with folk-like atmosphere. The best beaches are far and you go by car or boat. It’s expensive if you have a big family. We enjoyed the beach of itamambuca and curral which are clean and beautiful and have access by car… I decided to pay for parking close… not very cheap but ok. Restaurants Alecrin and Raizes were excellent options for dinner. We saw big traffic going downtown, for us walk was a good option from the hotel to the aquarium and downtown (didn’t go to the aquarium because was full and long line, also not cheap). Avoid need your car if you go on high season.

Ubatuba is a great area with very nice beaches and unlike many other beach areas, is very safe - you don't have to constantly keep your eyes on your mobile and belongings, which allows you to relax even more.

Downtown Ubatuba is good only at night for shopping souvenirs and to have a good dinning experience. The city has plenty of amazing beaches, my choice is “Praia do Leo” and south side of “Itamambuca” where the river meets the ocean (calm water and shallow spots great for kids).

Very popular beach town, lots of tourist facilities.

Very popular beach town, lots of tourist facilities. You can hit brutal, traffic entering or leaving at the wrong times of the weekend. We came in on Route SP-125 on a Sunday afternoon in January and the opposite direction had miles of cars exiting town, crawling slowly up the winding mountain road. It probably took them hours to break free.

Beautiful beaches and scenary!

24 July 2019

Beautiful beaches and scenary! Small, but cozy town center. Very busy during summer season and main holidays, might expect real traffic jams. Best to have car to get to the best beaches - a bit far from town center.
