About Calgary

Including tips for the best time to visit Calgary

Calgary is a cosmopolitan metropolis of just over 1.3 million people situated in the western Canadian province of Alberta. It’s Canada’s third largest city and is famous for its namesake ‘stampede’ – a ten-day Western-style extravaganza dubbed the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’ which holds the title of being the country’s largest and most famous festival. The city also offers a whole host of great food, plenty of green spaces and a lively nightlife scene.

For a bird’s eye view of the city, make sure you head up to the top of the Calgary Tower – at 190-metres-tall, it offers magnificent views over the downtown skyline. Other sites of interest include the Glenbow Museum which focuses on Western Canadian history and culture – including from Indigenous perspectives – and Fort Calgary which offers informative exhibits on the city's history. If you’re travelling with kids, the Calgary Zoo and Calaway Amusement Park are both well worth a visit.

Canada is famous for its scenery and picturesque countryside, and Calgary is no exception. Downtown lies Prince’s Island Park – an urban park located on an island connected by three bridges to the city, offering scenic hiking trails, picnic areas and seasonal events such as Shakespeare productions and more. Further out places include the Fish Creek Provincial Park – a sprawling reserve with over 100 kilometres of paved and unpaved trails which are ideal for both hiking and biking – as well as Nose Hill Park which offers sweeping cityscape views and the chance to see coyotes, deer, porcupines and more.

Nicer in the summer months although the skies have been...

30 March 2024

Nicer in the summer months although the skies have been smokey the past few years (forest fires). Prince's Island Park is probably the best park in the city located in the downtown area (free parking on Sundays & $1/h on Saturdays). The Peace Bridge (foot bridge just west of the Prince's Park) is a must see due to it's unique construction. Nose Hill Park (largest) has walking trails, but has no trees and rolling hills with grass, nothing to see there. Great Hamburgers, fries and shakes at Peter's (since 1962) on 16th Ave NE with areas to park and eat. Good Shopping at the Core Mall downtown, Chinook Mall along the McLeod trail and South Centre Mall. Downtown is interesting to walk around and photograph. Some people like the old downtown area along 17 Ave SW but I found it to be sketchy. Studio Bell is a nice place for Music History in the downtown area. Banff & Lake Louise are only a couple of hours away west. On the negative side I found driving on the Deerfoot hwy (and Calgary in General) to be challenging as many drivers are on the aggressive side, stay in the slow lane otherwise you'll have someone riding your bumper, etc. Plan you trip out in advance to avoid highway anxiety. Drive Safe and have fun. I'm sure there are many other things I missed seeing such as the Calgary Tower, maybe next time.

Traffic during bad weather always sucks, slow drivers, rush traffic which can make a drive extremely painful especially when going 20 kms on an 80 km road. Drivers are rude, aggressive and they like to tailgate others. Lots of options for restaurants and dining out.

3 February 2024

Downtown architecture is great, being from Edmonton I am used to a larger city however the buildings here are interesting to look at and all the public art is a nice touch. There is a ton of construction which makes getting around a pain and the use of off ramps is a bit much, if you miss a turn your going for a scenic drive. Overall it has the typical big city issues in regards to homeless people and drug use but I feel they have a good grip on it, we never felt unsafe walking around with our 4 year old and 3 month old. I definitely recommend checking out Blue Star Dinner we ate here for a few breakfast and weren't disappointed- 809 1 Ave NE, Calgary, AB T2E 0C2 We also ordered from Michael's Pizza Restaurant & Delivery twice while we were down there they had amazing pizza and being a house of Celiac's it was so nice to have a real pizza, we will now be making a detour to get these when driving past Calgary. -139 10 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0L9 Lastly Heaven Restaurant Market had some pretty deadly meals they are a bit more expensive but so worth it! -1013 17 Ave SW #119, Calgary, AB T2T 0A7

My trip began with a very enjoyable performance at Theatre Calgary. I enjoyed the waterfront walkway and the beautiful Princess Island area. Lovely views and lots of great cafes along the path. I enjoyed the outdoor bonfire pits and the ice rink near the Eau Clair area.

Although we only stayed in Calgary for 1 night we thoroughly enjoyed the city. The atmosphere was good and friendly and felt very safe. Plenty of options for eating and shopping. Good public transport around the city and to/from the airport. Will stay longer on our next visit

We never got to visit any of the Calgary experience, arrived three hours late on flight from London, Heathrow Airport and had an early morning flight out the next morning! My wife is huge fan of the panoramic view of the end of the flat Prairies to the rising of the Majestic Rockies. We got to experience an amazing sunrise that we couldn’t capture with our camera!
