About Whistler

Including tips for the best time to visit Whistler

The Sea-to-Sky Highway that connects Vancouver to Whistler follows the banks of Howe Sound before entering the mountains, offering a stunning preview of what's to come. The largest ski resort in North America, Whistler is famous for both its world-class trails and for hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Yet despite its predominantly snowy reputation, Canada's premier resort town is a year-round destination. Even after the snow melts, outdoorsy types come to hike and bike the 200-plus runs that crisscross its twin mountains as well as shop and dine in Whistler Village.

Winter sports are, collectively, Whistler's pièce de résistance. Whenever snow is forecasted, the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort's lifts, runs and drops swell to maximum capacity. Ice climbing, dog-sledding and cross-country skiing offer even more ways to experience the powdery landscape. Athletes still train at the Whistler Sliding Centre, where you can take a thrilling bobsleigh slide around the Olympic track. During warmer seasons, days are spent golfing, biking, hiking and horseback riding through the scenic terrain.

Whistler is one of Canada's most action-packed destinations, but there are a host of other, less sporty pursuits for sightseers. Whistler Village is full of stylish restaurants, après-ski bars and shops selling everything from art to jewellery. At the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Center, exhibits and events offer educational glimpses of the region's First Nations peoples. Even non-skiers can get in on the mountaintop action during a ride on the scenic Peak 2 Peak Gondola, which connects Whistler's two peaks.

23 April 2024

I have skied in many resorts in Europe and North Amerika, and Whistler-Blackcomb is on top of my list. The view, the variety of runs, the lifts, the grooming are all excellent. I will visit again before the end of this season and bring my two grandsons with me.

WE always try to eat at Araxi when in Whistler - been a favorite dining spot of ours for over 20 years. Spring time in Whistler has walking, hiking, skiing and is less crowded than high season. Nice finishing touch to the our ski year. The views from the top Harmony and Symphony chairs are the best!

Great end of season skiing but expensive for a family.

7 April 2024

Great end of season skiing but expensive for a family. Our accommodation was clean and good location but lacking in some amenities. Depending on where you stay it can be quite a walk to the lifts. If you want a more quiet stay go to the Blackcomb side. However most of the restaurants, shops etc. are in the village.

6 April 2024

Over 4 days we enjoyed the convenience of shopping and skiing nearby. A longer time is needed to explore the mountain more and the wide variety of eateries. The opportunity is also available to bike or hike but we did not have sufficient time.

5 April 2024

Ski terrain is great, including side- and off-piste, however lift ticket cost is way over the top at CAD 250 per day (compare that to European superresorts like Les Trois Vallees which are 40% the cost). And the snow quality is unreliable - 23/24 was the worst season even according to the locals, I was just lucky enough to get fresh snow at the start of my week. Won't be coming back to Whistler as the snow quality is highly unreliable, will go to Utah or Canadian Rockies in the future where the snow is more reliable (and tickets are cheaper) or Europe where it's much cheaper to ski! Whistler would have to halve the cost of lift tickets for me or my family to come back.

Visited at the end of the season.

1 April 2024

Visited at the end of the season. No snow at village level, but there was still powder/snow at the top - 5-10 inches news during our trip. The ticket prices are still way too high, but if you can pre-purchase early in the season, it's not too bad... Due to the season being not too great (snow wise) the owners should reduce ticket prices. Nevertheless, the demand is still high, especially at the weekend. The village supermarkets now offer very reasonably priced items (cheaper than Victoria!) and there are still good value restaurants around the town. The museum's and galleries etc + shops are great for non skiers.
