About Flensburg

Including tips for the best time to visit Flensburg

Situated in the northern part of Germany at the tip of the Flensburg Fjord, Flensburg is a key port along the Baltic Sea. This quaint town is steeped in maritime history and is strongly influenced by Danish culture.

A holiday in Flensburg will give you a glimpse of the city’s deep-rooted nautical heritage in one way or another. You can head to the Maritime Museum of Flensburg, browsing through exhibits that reflect the town’s seafaring past. You’ll also learn about how rum and sugar trade contributed to the wealth of the town. A good way to unwind is by strolling along the wooden walkway at the historic Flensburg Harbour with a view of sailboats and houses lined along the shore. If you’re looking for something different, visit Museumsberg Flensburg – one of the largest museums in Schleswig-Holstein – presenting art and cultural history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

Flensburg is best explored with a Flensburger Pilsener in hand as you wander around the Old Town, admiring its distinct German and Danish architecture. You’ll pass by historical structures, such as the 12th-century church, Johanniskirche, and the impressive town gate, Nordertor. For something more adventurous, set out on a boat tour along the Flensburg Fjord or enjoy windsurfing, kayaking or paddleboarding.

So sad that we only stayed for one night.

15 August 2023

So sad that we only stayed for one night. The city is very lovely and people are very friendly where we had breakfast and late lunch. The fishing harbour is very authentic, we learned a lot about the history etc. If we stayed longer, we would've walk farther to the other side of the bay and go to the beach, but it's an excuse to come back visiting this city.

7 January 2023

Our visit was timed around a performance at the Theatre which we particularly wanted to see. Besides that, we found the art museum’s current exhibition well chosen. The town is compact, full of variety, offers plenty of restaurants and unusual boutiques. A pleasant, international atmosphere. The local university ensures an active, youthful feeling.

Nice and calm city with (saturday) market nearby.

Nice and calm city with (saturday) market nearby. We did not stay long enough to see Nordertor, or wiking museum, but I liked the market and did not miss out the Serpentine path/stairs up left from central station.

11 February 2022

Flensburg is by far the nicest of the two large german cities in the north Flensburg and Kiel. We simply love the old walkingstreet in Flensburg and the market on saturdays are just fab. If you wanna have luch we recommend Die Weinstube im Krusehoff and for dinner Haxe mit sauerkraut und bratkartoffeln by Hansens Braurei OR Gnomenkeller wich is a really good steakhouse. Flensburg is a very cheap town to stay in, at Flensbed, which is a boarding house/hostel you can have a large room for just 40€ a person inkluding breakfast or you can stay at the old Hotel des Nordens just across the border from Denmark where you can have a 45m2 suite for just 220€ (use booking.com)

I was positive surprised!

8 August 2021

I was positive surprised! The city center is very beautiful with streets, people is very open minded and the nightlife is also good. There are a lot of alternative cafe and stores in the city center. And is also a really good place to rent a boat and "sailing" between Denmark and Germany!

We really liked to walk through the city center and along the waterside. Very nice restaurants on the opposite side of the water from the hotel. We also particulary liked the pub that was not so far away. We ate at the Hansens Brauerei which serves German dishes and very good locally brewed beer. We also went ot the Braasch rum shop and loved the local Flensubrg rum.
