About Munich

Including tips for the best time to visit Munich

Litres of beer, lederhosen and laid-back attitudes – Bavaria’s capital of Munich is where you’ll experience an untranslatable sense of serenity known as 'gemütlichkeit'.

Beer is one of the biggest parts of Bavarian culture, and Munich is filled with places to get your hands on a trademark tankard of golden Pilsner. One of the most historical beer halls is Hofbraühaus, which has been serving steins since 1644. If you want to blend in with the locals, order a Mass – one-litre tankard – of Augustiner, crafted by Munich's oldest independent brewery. The beer calendar culminates in the world-famous Oktoberfest, when over six million people raise their tankards and cheers the Bavarian way with a shout of ‘Prost!’ Soak up your beer with some schweinshaxe (roasted pork knuckle), bratwurst (pork sausage) or fresh pretzels.

Munich is much more than just its beer halls – just take a stroll through its beautiful main square, Marienplatz, to see for yourself. Its famous glockenspiel comes to life throughout the day, playing music on 43 bells and depicting historical events through charming dancing animatronic figures. Just a short walk away from the square is the 15th-century Frauenkirche cathedral, known for its iconic domed towers.

The easiest way to make your way around Munich is with a tageskarte, which gives you unlimited use of public transport for an entire day. For added freedom and fun, you can also hop on one of the many public e-scooters sprinkled around the city.

Munich was very expensive and a bit underwhelming.

22 April 2024

Munich was very expensive and a bit underwhelming. The architecture within the city centre was a joy to behold and capture, however, although the restaurants we visited were first class in terms of provisions, amenities, and customer service, it is not a place for someone to visit on a very low income. There are places to eat out at outwith the city centre which ate less expensive but these are hard to discover. Saturday nights in the centre of Munich is out of bounds if visiting a restaurant or bar unless you make a reservation beforehand. We couldn't get into any licensed establishment on Saturday evening in the city centre although there are plenty of eateries. Retail therapy on a Sunday is a no-go as well as 99% of retailers are closed on this day. The planned guided tours of Munich are mainly German spoken and are very stop start in nature, so you'll hardly get to see and savour the place you primarily wish to visit like Dachau Castle.

Munich has its own character and charm on its own!

Munich has its own character and charm on its own! Marienplatz and the shopping district would be a good place to start the attraction sightseeing. We love a place called Augustine Keller, a beer house that is located near Eden Hotel Wolffe and showcased the charm and rustic culture of Germany. Very nice place for dinner and drinks!

Beautiful city, historically amazing, friendly people; the hop on and off bus was worth it. Had a great time, my friends who recommended it were right As a vegetarian it was sometime a challenge. But the beer made up for it. Great time with family.

We stayed 4 days (3 nights) in Munich.

8 April 2024

We stayed 4 days (3 nights) in Munich. It is very easy to get around in the town, the underground network is great, you can easily access any place. We visited Deutsches Museum and spent a whole day there: it was fascinating, however, 6 hours were only enough for a quick visit, you could spend a lot more time in there. Next day we went to the FC Bayern München Museum and Stadium/Allianz Arena. The museum is interesting, you can walk around it in about 1.5-2 hours, there is a souvenir shop at the exit as well. It is worth booking a guided tour around the stadium, it is very enjoyable.

Great place to visit.

6 April 2024

Great place to visit. Did Mike's Bike Tours - great way of seeing some of the city - leisurely pace. Went to Dachau with my teenage son - easy get there. Visited Marienplatz, climbed the church tower, had beer in the Hofbrauhaus. Englischgarten great for a visit - massive - surfers on the Eisbach river so impressive. Public transport in the city is very good - easy to get around and cheap. Would really recommend a visit to Munich.

Munich in March- still very busy!

27 March 2024

Munich in March- still very busy! In some parts can be very seedy as with any city. Lots of beggars, barber shops and kebab shops with men gathered in doorways all smoking furiously. Beautiful architecture and this place is HUGE! 3 days was not nearly enough.
